Harvesting fruit is a very precise peratin. The fruit must be picked when it is perfectly ripe. But with pickers in shrt supply in recent years, grwers needed t quickly find anther way t harvest their crps. Tevel Aerbtics Technlgies came t the farmers’ rescue with the Flying Autnmus Rbts (FARs) that can help pick fruit.
“Nt finding enugh fruit pickers is every farmer’s biggest cncern,” Yaniv Mar, Tevel’s funder and CEO said. “Ask any farmer, anywhere in the wrld and they’ll tell yu they dn’t have the peple. Fd cnsumptin is increasing, but labr availability is decreasing. If pickers are nt available, fruit will g bad n the trees. The flying rbts will wrk day and night in almst any weather, withut taking a break, t pick as much ripe fruit as pssible.
Mar set up Tevel in 2017 and develped the technlgy after seeing yung Israelis pick fruit and tired after a few hurs. He realized that there had t be a better way, s he began develping the sftware and artificial intelligence (AI) that are needed fr the smart rbt pickers. “We have t teach the rbt abut each fruit, the branches, the leaves, hw t access the fruit and hw t rtate (转动) it and discnnect it frm the tree,” Mar said.
The flying rbts circle rund trees and pick nly the ripe nes with a twist (扭动) f their integrated grasper arms. The rbts are fitted with cameras that use AI t assess the size and clr f the fruit s that nly the ripe pieces are picked. The cameras als ensure that the rbts’ paths are nt blcked.
The rbts are currently picking Asian pears in Israel. In 2022, the FARs were used in pilt prgrams in Italy t pick peaches and ther fruits, as well as in the US.
