“T repair ancient bks, we have a lt t d,” says Sng Jing, 34, wh has been wrking in the restratin divisin fr ancient bks at the Natinal Library f China in Beijing fr eight years. Befre starting a restratin prject, Sng and her clleagues have t evaluate the subject t cnsider what prblems can be slved thrugh restratin and thse that cannt. Fearing the chemicals in cmmercially prduced pastes(胶水) might harm the bks, they have t make the glues they need by themselves, starting frm remving starch(淀粉) frm flur.
“The restratin als requires high levels f cntrl in brushing the paper. If the pressure is nt prperly cntrlled during the brushing prcess, the paper may tear, but if the tuch is t light, the paper wn't stick,” Sng explains.
Sng was determined t jin the field frm an early age. As a child, she was attracted by dcumentaries abut the wrld's cultural relics(遗物) and became deeply interested in the art f artifact restratin.
In senir middle schl, thse earlier experiences helped her t set her sights n becming a master restrer f ancient bks.
There were nt many schls ffering cultural-relic restratin curses back then, and her dream destinatin, Peking University, nly ffered penings every ther year.
As Sng lked int undergraduate curricula(本科课程) arrangement fr that particular field f study, she fund it was mstly related t chemistry. Therefre, she chse t start a chemistry degree at Fudan University in Shanghai in 2008. In her spare time, she cntinued t read up n cultural relics and study hw museums perate.
“I gt t learn hw certain aspects f chemistry are ging a lng way in restring cultural relics,” she says.
After graduating frm Fudan, she was accepted as a master's candidate t the cultural heritage preservatin prgram at Peking University. Frm then n, she has been n a missin t make her dreams a reality.

Financial regulatins in Britain have impsed a rather unusual rule n the bsses f big banks. Starting next year, any guaranteed bnus f tp executives culd be delayed 10 years if their banks are under investigatin fr wrngding. The main purpse f this “clawback” rule is t hld bankers respnsible fr harmful risk-taking and t restre public trust in financial institutin. Yet fficials als hpe fr a much larger benefit: mre lng-term decisin-making nt nly by banks but als by all crpratins, t build a strnger ecnmy fr future generatins.
“Shrt-termism” r the desire fr quick prfits, has wrsened in publicly traded cmpanies, says the Bank f England’s tp ecnmist, Andrew Haldane. He qutes a giant f classical ecnmies, Alfred Marshall, in describing this financial impatience as acting like “Children wh pick the strawberries ut f their pudding t eat them at nce” rather than putting them aside t be eaten last.
The average time fr hlding a stck in bth the United States and Britain, he ntes, has drpped frm seven years t seven mnths in recent decades. Transient(短期的)investrs, wh demand high quarterly prfits frm cmpanies, can hld back a firm’s effrts t invest in lng-term research r t build up custmer lyalty. This has been called “quarterly capitalism”.
In additin, new digital technlgies have allwed mre rapid trading f equities(股票), quicker use f infrmatin, and thus shrtens attentin spans in financial markets. “There seems t be an advantage f shrt-term thinking at the expense f lng-term investing,” said Cmmissiner Daniel Gallagher f the US Securities and Exchange Cmmissin in speech this week.
In the US, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act f 2002 has pushed mst public cmpanies t delay perfrmance bnuses fr senir executives by abut a year, slightly helping reduce “shrt-termism.” In its latest survey f CEO pay, The Wall Street Jurnal finds that “a substantial part” f executive pay is nw tied t perfrmance.
Much mre culd be dne t encurage “lng-termism,” such as changes in the tax cde and quicker disclsure(披露)f stck acquisitins. In France, sharehlders wh hld nt a cmpany investment fr at least tw years can smetimes earn mre vting rights in a cmpany.
Within cmpanies, the right cmpensatin design can prvide mtivatin fr executives t think beynd their wn time at the cmpany and n behalf f all sharehlders. Britain’s new rule is a reminder t bankers that sciety has an interest in their perfrmance, nt just fr the shrt term but fr the lng term.
28.One reasn fr impsing the new rule is the regulatins _________.
    A.enhance banker’s sense f respnsibility
    B.help crpratins achieve larger prfits
    C.build a new system f financial regulatin
D.guarantee the bnuses f tp executives
29.What can be learned abut “Shrt-termism” frm the passage?
A.Children always pursue shrt-term prfits by eating strawberries first.
B.The influence f it n the cmpanies can be negative in the lng run.
C.It will bring high prfits fr the cmpany, thus keeping its custmers.
D.Digital technlgy acts as a dminant cntributr t its wrsening.
30.The US and France examples in paragraph 5 and 6 are used t illustrate ________.
    A.the bstacles t preventing “shrt-termism”
    B.the significance f lng-term thinking
    C.the appraches t prmting “lng-termism”
    D.the ppularity f shrt-term thinking
31.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A.Failure f Quarterly Capitalism
    B.Patience as a Crprate Virtue
    C.Decisiveness Required f Tp Executives
    D.Frustratin f Risk-taking Bankers
    D
“Tw centuries ag, Lewis and Clark left St. Luis t explre the new lands acquired in the Luisiana Purchase,” Gerge W. Bush said, annuncing his desire fr a prgram t send men and wmen t Mars. They made that jurney in the spirit f discvery. America has ventured frth int space fr the same reasns.
Yet there are vital differences between Lewis and Clark’s expeditin and a Mars missin. First, they were headed t a place where hundreds f thusands f peple were already living. Secnd, they were certain t discver places and things f immediate value t the new natin. Third, their venture cst next t nthing by tday’s standards. A Mars missin may be the single mst expensive nn-wartime undertaking in U.S. histry.
Appealing as the thught f travel t Mars is, it des nt mean the jurney makes sense, even cnsidering the human calling t explre. And Mars as a destinatin fr peple makes abslutely n sense with current technlgy.
Present systems fr getting frm Earth’s surface t lw-Earth rbit are s fantastically expensive that merely launching the 1,000 tns r s f spacecraft and equipment a Mars missin wuld require culd be accmplished nly by cutting health-care benefits, educatin spending, r ther imprtant prgrams—r by raising taxes. Absent (缺乏)sme remarkable discvery, astrnauts, gelgists, and bilgists nce n Mars culd d little mre than analyze rcks and feel awestruck (敬畏的) staring int the sky f anther wrld. Yet rcks can be analyzed by autmated prbes withut risk t human life, and at a tiny prtin f the cst f sending peple.
It is interesting t nte that when President Bush unveiled (公开) his prpsal, he listed these recent majr achievements f space explratin: pictures f evidence f water n Mars, discvery f mre than 100 planets utside ur slar system, and study f the sil f Mars. All these accmplishments came frm autmated prbes r autmated space telescpes. Bush’s prpsal, which calls fr reprgramming sme f NASA’s present budget int the Mars effrt, might actually lead t a reductin in such unmanned science—the ne aspect f space explratin that’s wrking really well.
Rather than spend hundreds f billins f dllars t hurl (投) tns tward Mars using current technlgy, why nt take a decade r tw r hwever much time is required researching new launch systems and advanced prpulsin (推进力)? If new launch systems culd put weight int rbit affrdably, and advanced prpulsin culd speed up that lng, slw transit (运输) t Mars, the dream f stepping nt the red planet might becme reality. Mars will still be there when the technlgy is ready.
32.What d Lewis and Clark’s expeditin and a Mars missin have in cmmn?
    A.Instant value.B.Human inhabitance.
    C.Venture cst.D.Explring spirit.
33.Bush’s prpsal is challenged fr the fllwing reasns EXCEPT that ______.
A.great achievements have already been made in Mars explratin in America.
B.American peple’s well-being will suffer a lt if it is carried ut.
C.its expense is t huge fr the gvernment t affrd.
D.unmanned Mars explratin sunds mre practical and ecnmical fr the mment.
34.Which f the fllwing can be cncluded frm the passage?
A.Ging t Mars using current technlgy is quite sensible.
B.A Mars missin will in turn prmte the develpment f unmanned prgram.
C.Bush’s prpsal is based n three recent great achievements f space explratin.
D.The achievements in space explratin shw hw well manned science has develped.
35.What is the main idea f the passage?
A.Risky as it is, a Mars missin helps maintain America’s psitin as a technlgical leader.
B.A Mars missin is s cstly that it may lead t an ecnmic disaster in America.
C.Smeday peple may g t Mars but nt until it makes technlgical sense.
D.A Mars missin is unnecessary since the scientists nce there wn’t make great discveries.

    第二节 语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
Beauty bias: We tend t think pretty peple are mrally superir
Humans have always assciated beauty with gdness. The prevalence(流行,普遍)f the assumptin that beautiful peple are gd 56 (study) fr the past few decades, with extensive research n the subject ging back t the 1970s. 57 yu start thinking that yu’d never judge smebdy by hw they lk, the studies suggest that yu likely d it all the time — very quickly and nt fully aware f it.
This bias has real-wrld impacts. The attractive are 58 (likely) t be fund guilty by simulated juries(陪审团)and mre likely t get reduced punishments when they are. Peple tend t vte fr mre attractive pliticians, prmte better-lking underlings, and even give mre attentin t better-lking children than thse with — 59 Gerge Carlin put it — “severe appearance deficits”.
A study recently published in the Jurnal f Nnverbal Behavir shed new light n the bias. Different frm previus studies, 60 nt nly lked t see whether peple assciate psitive traits with gd-lking peple (we knw they d), but als tk a clser lk at which traits are assciated with appearance, with tw tests respectively fcused n purely mral traits, such as being fair, trustwrthy, r hnest, and psitive but nn-mral traits, such as being funny, 61 (rganize), r calm.
Lining up with previus studies 62 (shw) that peple assciate beauty with all manner f psitive traits, the results f bth tests als gave new insight int 63 traits are mst affected by the “hal effects”(光环效应)that gd lks prvide. In bth studies, mral traits were mre likely t be assciated with beauty than nn-mral traits. The effect was particularly bvius in the secnd study, in which beautiful peple were 20% mre likely t be cnsidered 64 (have) these traits than the average persn, cmpared t nly a 10% increase in the perceived likelihd they wuld have the nn-mral traits.
The authrs f the study nted that they expect their findings t have real-wrld implicatins. Given hw many previus studies demnstrate that there are serius cnsequences frm this bias, their stance shuld nt surprise us. They pinted ut, hwever, that despite the lng histry f science knwing that this bias exists, “there is n interventin available that may reduce prejudice tward r discriminatin 65 unattractive individuals.”
