The very next day, he asked his cmpany if they wuld help fund the restratin f the 36 acre lake. Hwever, they were uncertain whether Malligavad culd d this. Determined t succeed, Malligavad tk it upn himself t study the histry f the lake and familiarize himself with varius lake restratin methds. Fur mnths later, Malligavad received funding frm his cmpany, which enabled him t start wrking n this prject in the city f Bengaluru.
With the aid f hundreds f vlunteers, they remved the waste and pened the channels. Malligavad then adpted the ancient Chla methd t build mud walls that channel the extra rainwater int the lakes fr agricultural use. It tk them just 45 days and then they waited fr the rains. Six mnths later, when the rainy seasn came, he was ut bating n a fresh, clean lake. “When I saw the lake, I felt yunger, and I wanted t jump int it,” Malligavad said.
Since this first win, Malligavad has nt stpped. He created a nn-prfit rganizatin called The Lake Revivers Cllective. “All I have is a sense f urgency that if we dn’t repair the damage we’ve already caused,” he said, “it’s ging t end badly fr all f us. Water shrtage is a majr prblem in Bengaluru. Water tankers must drive in t meet the ppulatin’s needs.” His methds help t slve the prblem, and even attract wildlife.

“We’ve gt a prblem here,” ur mechanic (修理工) Randy said ver the phne.
“What is it?” I asked. My husband Matthew, and I had drpped ff ur car fr an il change a cuple f hurs earlier. We had made an appintment with ur usual mechanic Randy and decided n using synthetic il, which requires a change every 500 miles, as ppsed t 300 miles fr regular il. Thugh synthetic il was the mre expensive ptin, it seemed like a gd investment cnsidering hw much we wuld travel.
“Once f my guys put in the wrng il,” Randy explained. He had been ut f the garage fr a test drive and left ur il change t ne f his emplyees. The emplyee had put in the regular il. “Nw we can drain (排干) the engine and put in the synthetic il,” Randy said. “Or yu can leave it as it is. Yu wn’t be charged since it was ur mistake.”
Matthew and I decided t leave things alne. Draining the engine seemed like a waste. We culd get the synthetic il the next time arund. But we did insist n paying fr the wrk — it had been an hnest mistake after all.
Matthew and I didn’t think abut the il change until a few weeks later. We were making plans t drive frm Suth Carlina, up thrugh the muntains f West Virginia, t visit my uncle in Maryland. It was a lng trip, and we’d already put 286 miles n the car since ur last il change, s we wanted Randy t change the il early.
We drpped ff the car befre lunch and asked Randy t d the change. We’d barely sat dwn t eat when my phne rang. It was Randy. “Yur brakes are cmpletely sht,” he said. “I’m surprised they lasted the drive ver here. Yu’ll need t replace them immediately.” Luckily, he had the parts n hand. We gave him the g-ahead and hung up.
Matthew and I stared at each ther in disbelief. If the crrect il had been put in a few weeks earlier, we wuldn’t have gne back t the mechanic s sn. We wuldn’t have knwn the brakes were bad. Wh knws what culd have happened, especially n thse muntain rads?

This can be fun: a TikTk accunt n which an artificial Tm Cruise wearing a purple rbe sings “Tiny Dancer” t (the real) Paris Hiltn hlding a ty dg has attracted 5.1m fllwers. It is nw pssible t generate fake cntent with little mre than the click f a muse. A prfund change is happening in scieties that have lng regarded images, vide and audi as slid prf t prve that smething is real.
The fundamental prblem is an ld ne. Frm the printing press t the internet, new technlgies have made it easier t spread untruths r imitate the real. Typically, humans have used shrtcuts t discver ful play, fr example, AI-generated images f peple have ften been betrayed by their strangely behaved hands.
The truble is that the fakes are rapidly getting harder t spt since AI is imprving all the time with cmputing pwer and training data becming mre abundant. Culd AI-pwered fake-detectin sftware, built int web brwsers, identify cmputer-generated cntent? Sadly nt. Eventually AI mdels will prbably be able t prduce digital clnes f a genuine recrding f an event.
Yet scieties will als adapt t the fakers. Peple will learn that images, audi r vide f smething d nt prve that it happened. Online cntent will n lnger prve itself, s wh psted smething will becme as imprtant as what was psted. Assuming trustwrthy surces can cntinue t identify themselves securely via URLs, email addresses and scial -media platfrms, reputatin and rigin will becme mre imprtant than ever. The fact that peple may sn struggle t spt the invisible hand f AI des nt mean the marketplace f ideas is bund t fall. With time passing, the fakes that thrive will mstly be sme funny nes.
    9. What issue des the authr present at the beginning?
    A. Artificial perfrmance is ppular wrldwide.
    B. Fake cntent is easy t create at present time.
    C. Great changes brught by AI are happening nw.
    D. Images, vide and audi are slid prf t reality.
    10. What d the underlined wrds “ful play” in paragraph 2 refer t?
    A. Prfund changes.
    B. Diverse technlgies.
    C. Fundamental prblems.
    D. Untrustwrthy cntents.
    11. Which factr is mre significant fr peple t identify fakers?
    A. Reliable surces.
    B. Secure web brwsers.
    C. Ht scial media platfrms.
    D. Pwerful fake-detectin sftwares.
    12. Which f the fllwing best describes the authr's attitude t human ideas?
    A. Skeptical.B. Critical.
    C. Dismissive.D. Psitive.
