Extremely authentic-lking prsthetic (假体的) eyes can nw be 3D-printed in a fractin f the time it wuld nrmally take t prduce the eyes by hand, scientists demnstrate in a new study.
The new technlgy can create a prsthetic eye in just 90 minutes, cmpared with the eight hurs it wuld nrmally take a skilled technician, r cularist, t prduce ne by hand. The 3D-printed eyes require five times less labr t make than traditinal methds, the scientists behind the technlgy wrte in a new paper published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
The 3D-printed eyes als lk mre natural than traditinal prstheses; this culd help imprve a patient’s self-cnfidence in using the devices. “Patients are very cnscius abut wearing a prsthesis, and they dn’t want thers t ntice,” Jhann Reinhard, lead study authr and a researcher at the Fraunhfer Institute fr Cmputer Graphics Research in Germany, tld us. “With these mre realistic eves, it might help them t participate mre in sciety,” he said.
The new printing apprach invlves taking a specialized image f a patient’s empty eye scket and f their healthy eye. These images are then prcessed and used t draft blueprints that can be sent t be 3D-printed in the lab. These 3D-printed eyes clsely replicate the clr, size and structure f the patient's healthy eye and are particularly gd at capturing the clred part f the eye, knwn as the iris, and the white part f the eye, called the sclera. Once finished, the eyes take 15 t 30 minutes t be installed by an cularist, Reinhard said.
“Abut 80% f adults in need f prsthetic eyes culd theretically have ne made this way, either due t a birth defect that causes an eye t be small r missing r because they’ve lst an eye,” the team said. “Hwever, this wuldn’t be pssible fr all patients, such as thse wh have a very cmplex eye scket, as the sftware wuldn’t be able t find a matching shape fr the prsthetic eye,” Reinhard said.
“Mre data are needed t see if this technique culd als be used t make prsthetic eyes fr children, which wuld require mre regulatin,” Reinhard said.
28. Which f the fllwing wrds can be best used t describe the 3D-printed eyes?

30. Which statement is true abut a 3D-printed eye?

B. Every adult in need f a prsthetic eye can’t pssibly have ne.
C. It nrmally takes a skilled technician, r cularist, t prduce ne.
D. The installment f ne is 5 times faster than a traditinal prsthetic eye.

When yu ask peple t judge thers by their speech, a trend emerges: Listeners dislike disfluency. Slw talkers prducing lads f ums and pauses (停顿) are generally perceived as less charming. But science tells us there may be even mre t disfluency.
Disfluencies d nt ccur in arbitrary psitins in sentences. Ums typically ccur right befre mre difficult r lw-frequency wrds. Imagine yu’re having dinner with a friend at a restaurant, and there’re three items n the table: a knife, a glass, and a wine decanter (醒酒器). Yur friend turns t yu and says, “Culd yu hand me the ... um...” What wuld yu assume they want? Since it’s unlikely that they will hesitate befre such cmmn wrds as knife, and glass, chances are yu’ll pick up the decanter and ask, “Yu mean this?”
This is exactly what we demnstrated thrugh cntrlled eye-tracking studies in ur lab. Apparently, listeners hear the um and predict that an uncmmn wrd is mst likely t fllw. Such predictins, thugh, reflect mre than just simple assciatin between disfluencies and difficult wrds; listeners are actively cnsidering frm the speaker’s pint f view. Fr example, when hearing a nn-native speaker say the same sentence but with a thick freign accent, listeners dn’t shw a preference fr lking at lw-frequency bjects. This is prbably because listeners assume nn-native speakers may have as much truble cming up with the English wrd fr a cmmn bject, like a knife, as fr unusual nes and can’t guess their intentin.
In anther experiment, listeners were presented with an uncmmn speaker wh prduced disfluencies befre simple wrds and never befre difficult wrds. Initially, participants displayed the natural predictive strategy: lking at uncmmn bjects. Hwever, as mre time went by, they gained experience with this uncmmn distributin f disfluencies. Listeners started t demnstrate the cntrary predictive behavir: They tended t lk at simple bjects when hearing the speaker say um.
These findings represent further evidence that the human brain is a predictin machine: We cntinuusly try t predict what will happen next, even thugh nt all disfluencies are created equal.
32. Which statement des the example in paragraph 2 supprt?
A. Pauses usually fllw uncmmn wrds.B. Slw talkers tend t pause mre.
C. Fluent speakers are unlikely t pause.D. Active listeners nly guess difficult wrds.
33. What des the authr say abut the nn-native speakers?
A. They can be understd easily.B. They actively put themselves in thers’ shes.
C. Their vcabularies are limited.D. Their disfluencies are a little less predictive.
34. What des the experiment in paragraph 4 shw?
A. Simple things are difficult in sme cases.B. Listeners can adjust predictins accrdingly.
C. Distributin f disfluencies is changeable.D. Disfluencies in cmmunicatin can be avided.
35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the article?
A. Pauses Cexist with HesitatinB. Human Brains Have the Pwer t Predict
C. Active Listeners Simplify TalksD. Disfluency Says Mre than Yu Think
