The University f Reading,in England, has just pened a new clearing huse fr all the wrld’s new cca varieties. They must be quarantined(隔离检疫)befre they can be grwn. Why? Cca prductin hit a recrd high f 4. 4 millin tns last year but abut 30%f the precius crp is regularly lst t pests and diseases. Nw we dn’t want that,d we?
Demand fr chclate has been increasing faster than the wrld supply f cca and researchers think that new varieties are key t slving this prblem.
The University f Reading has been prtecting the quality f the new crps since 1985,after it tk ver the task frm the Ryal Btanical Gardens in Kew,Lndn. And it has imprved its facilities. The leader f the institutin’s cca prject,Prfessr Paul Hadley, says,“One f the main issues cncerning cca imprvement is the supply f reliably clean, healthy, interesting cca material. ”
The cca centre has a cllectin f 400 plant varieties and their greenhuse uses a lt f energy t keep them in trpical cnditins. After up t tw years in quarantine, clean and safe seeds are sent t sme 20 cuntries, including several in West Africa. That’s where 75%f the cca used fr chclate wrldwide cmes frm. What are American high schls like? Well, I’m happy t tell yu what I knw.
When I started schl here, it had already been a week since the schl pened. At this schl, freshmen usually g n a trip fr abut three days at the beginning f schl. Unfrtunately I missed that wnderful trip, which wuld have been the best time t get t knw my classmates. I was really sad. I wished I’d knwn abut it earlier.
Despite the disappintment, hwever, I gradually adapted t my new life and schl. There is a space in the basement f the teaching building where students chat and meet each ther. As we d nt always have the same classrms and classmates, the schl wants us t get t knw each ther there. Students usually cme t schl early, sit in that space and have fun. Arund the space, there are many lckers fr students t leave their bks in, s that students d nt have t carry a heavy schlbag everywhere.
It really surprises me that we have almst n textbks. We nly have textbks fr Wrld Histry and Algebra 2 and they are big and heavy, like bricks. Fr ther classes, we nly need binders (活页夹) with paper in them. Withut textbks, students learn things freely and actively. Fr example, my humanities teacher just teaches us what is in her mind at the time. We never knw what we will learn.
Anther difference between American schls and Chinese schls is that American schls care abut students’ mrality mre than their academic studies. Fr example, if yu d nt finish yur hmewrk, yu will just be asked t d it later, but if yu cheat r lie, yu will get a warning r even be kicked ut.
I think that mst students here are gd at schlwrk as well, but cmpared t Chinese students, they can make learning a mre jyful experience. I think we shuld take the gd pints frm ur tw different kinds f educatin t perfect ur apprach t studying.

C. Sme use textbks; sme teach freely. D. They always teach as required.
31. Accrding t the passage, in American high schls, ________.
A. yu are likely t be kicked ut if yu cheat
B. yu’ll be punished if yu d nt finish yur hmewrk

Bttm peratin invlves drpping nets t the cean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fish. This actin damaged the cean flr, causing the cral branches t separate frm the reefs. While that is very discuraging, the gd news is that if these branches are fund quickly, they can be saved. At present, that wrk is being perfrmed by vlunteer divers. But the methd has nly limited success because they cannt stay lng underwater, nr reach depths f ver 200 meters where sme f the deep-sea cral grws.
Hwever, this is nt the case fr Cralbts—the rbts that can cnstantly seek ut brken branches. A team f ‘cralbts’,each individually wrking t simple rules will piece tgether damaged bits f cral, allwing them t regrw. They are prgrammed t be able t distinguish between ther things and the cral. The rbts wrk tgether in grups, similar t bees. If ne cralbt is damaged then the thers will still be able t cmplete the task.
Dr Lea-Anne Henry said:“The prject f using cralbts ffers us the pssibility t restre(修复)the functin f reefs. It is in the final stage f testing. Once ready, the researchers hpe t build hundreds f them and use them effectively in the waters ff Sctland and then hpefully in the ceans acrss the wrld. ”
