Psychlgist Susan Levine,an expert n mathematics develpment in yung children at the University f Chicag, fund children wh play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develp better spatial skills.Puzzle play was fund t be a significant predictr f cgnitin(认知)after cntrlling fr differences in parents’ incme, educatin and the amunt f parent talk,Levine said.
The researchers analyzed vide recrdings f 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at hme and fund children wh play with puzzles between 26 and 46 mnths f age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 mnths f age.
“The children wh played with puzzles perfrmed better than thse wh did nt,n tasks that assessed their ability t rtate(旋转)and translate shapes,”Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked t interact with their children as they nrmally wuld, and abut half f the children in the study played with puzzles at ne time.Higher-incme parents tended t have children play with puzzles mre frequently, and bth bys and girls wh played with puzzles had better spatial skills.Hwever, bys tended t play with mre cmplex puzzles than girls, and the parents f bys prvided mre spatial language and were mre active during puzzle play than the parents f girls.
The findings were published in the jurnal Develpmental Science.
    27. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. A mathematical methd.
    B. A scientific study.
    C. A wman psychlgist.
    D. A teaching prgram.

A number f cmpanies have used the wind, the sun and the grund heat t prduce energy. Nw, the Ocean Renewable Pwer Cmpany, r ORPC, is using the frce f flwing rivers and cean currents. The cmpany recently presented the new technlgy at an energy cnference. Christpher Sauer, the CEO and c-creatr f ORPC says the technlgy was designed fr small, rural cmmunities that d nt have easy access t pwer surces.
The ORPC technlgy is an energy generatr which can be put under water, called RivGen. It wrks in a series f steps. First, the generatr is put in the middle f a steel cage. The cage ges n tp f a wide bat with a flat bttm. Wheels— r, turbines (涡轮机) — are attached t each side f the generatr. Once the bat is fixed t ne place, it is flded with water. The bat, cage, and generatr all sink t the bttm f the river. There, the river current turns the wheels and creates as much as 50 kilwatts f pwer.
CEO Christpher Sauer says RivGen is nt very tall, s it can wrk in water areas that are nt very deep. Other cmpanies are nt able t wrk in shallw water, he adds. Sauer says the turbines are safe fr the animals that live in the river. Meanwhile, the turbines’ shape permits the generatr t harvest pwer frm tidal currents in the cean. The cmpany’s cean turbine, called TidGen, can create up t 600 kilwatts f electricity, enugh t pwer a small settlement.
Right nw, the amunt f pwer TidGen can harvest changes as the strength f the tide ges up and dwn. But ORPC wrkers are trying t make the pwer utput steady. In time, they want TidGen pwer t be part f the main energy grid (电网). Sauer estimates ORPC’ s current price is abut 50 cents per kilwatt-hur. That price des nt make the ORPC system cmpetitive with natural gas. Hwever, fr small rural cmmunities, diesel (柴油) energy can cst mre than $ 1 per hur. In these situatins, energy frm flwing water culd be mre ecnmical.

The public’s reactin t yung Siri has been huge. Sme f his vides have been watched mre than130, 000 times. “In a shrt time, the respnse, especially frm families living in similar situatins, was pwerful and exciting s we decided t keep ging,” his mther said. Siri’s fllwers respnd with a cuntless number f “likes” and messages f supprt.
Siri said he wanted t end the stigma —- r unfair beliefs— that ften surrunds disability. I wanted t shw that children with special needs can still have fun and lead a happy life. NO ONE EVER said science educatin was easy. Certainly the cncepts we teach, like cnservatin f mmentum r quantum mechanics, can be hard t grasp. But what really cmplicates the attempt is that we' re als trying t teach a deeper lessn at the same time — t help students understand the nature f science itself.
All t ften, yung peple get the impressin that science is abut learning certain “laws" and then applying them t different situatins. After all, that's what we make them d n tests, t shw that they've been ding the wrk. But that’s nt it at all. Science is the prcess f building these cncepts thrugh the cllectin f experimental evidence.
And while I'm n it, let's call these cncepts what they really are—nt laws, but mdels. Science is all abut building and testing mdels. It's difficult t help students understand that aspect f science when we just give them the mdels t begin with. Sure, in physics we ften include histrical r mathematical evidence t supprt big ideas , but that ften isn't enugh.
Of curse, we can't start frm nthing. If students had t build their wn mdels frm the grund up, it wuld be like trying t learn prgramming by inventing cmputers. As Isaac Newtn is suppsed t have said, we stand n the shulders f giants. We must take mdels built by thers and g frm there.
What I'd like t suggest is that this actually prvides a great way int the adventure f science and an pprtunity t meet ur bjectives as educatrs. If yu can create a situatin that challenges students' assumptins and prduces cnceptual cnflict, that's a great pprtunity fr learning.
    9. What is the misunderstanding f teaching science?
    A. It's cmplicated.B. It fcuses n the nature f science.
    C. It's very difficult.D. It lies in leaching and testing “laws”.
    10. Which way t teach science is highly recmmended by the authr?
    A. Encuraging students t always start frm nthing.
    B. Prviding students with sme mdels t fllw suit.
    C. Guiding students t begin with mdels built by thers.
    D. 0ffering students prf i supprt imprtant cncepts.
    11. The authr cites Isaac Newtn's wrds t .
    A. justify the experimentB. praise the statement
    C. shw the achievementD. supprt the argument
    12. What is the best title f die passage?
    A. The Best Way t Teach Science
    B. The Best Way f Cncept Building

Every day we experiencc ne f the wnders f the wrld arund us withut even realizing it . It is nt the amazing cmplexity f televisin, nr the impressive tcchnlgy f transprt. The universal wnder we share and experience is ur ability t make nises with ur muths, and s transmit ideas and thughts t each ther’s minds. This ability cmes s naturally that we tend t frget what a miracle (奇迹)it is.
Obviusly, the ability t talk is smething that marks humans ff frm animals. Of curse, sme animals have pwers just as amazing. Birds can fly thusands f miles by bserving psitins f the stars in the sky in relatin t the time f day and year. In Nature’s talent shw, humans are a species f animal that have develped their wn special act. If we reduce it t basic terms, it’s an ability fr cmmunicating infrmatin t thers by varying sunds we make as we breathe ut.
Nt that we dn’t have ther pwers f cmmunicatin. Our facial expressins cnvey ur emtins, such as anger, r jy, r disappintment. The way we hld ur heads can indicate t thers whether we are happy r sad. This is s-called “bdy language”. Bristling (直立的) fur is an unmistakable warning f attack amng many animals. Similarly, the bwed head r drping tail shws a readiness t take secnd place in any animal gathering.
Such a means f cmmunicatin is a basic mechanism that animals, including human beings, instinctively acquire and display. Is the ability t speak just anther srt f instinct? If s, hw did human beings acquire this amazing skill? Bilgists can readily indicate that particular area f ur brain where speech mechanisms functin, but this desn’t tell us hw that part f ur bdies riginated in ur bilgical histry.

Bird expert Stephen Kress remembers the first time he encuntered puffins (角嘴海雀). “I was ttally amazed frm the mment I saw them,” he says. Tw years after his first encunter, while teaching at a nature camp in Maine, Kress learned that the state's puffin clnies were all but destryed by hunters in the late 1800s. The puffins were killed fr their eggs, meat and feathers.
Kress decided t learn mre abut these “special birds.” His fascinatin grew int Prject Puffin, a decades-lng effrt t bring the puffins back t Maine. Kress ran the prject while wrking fr the Natinal Audubn Sciety, a majr bird cnservatin nnprfit in the US.
Prject Puffin’s rigins lie n an uninhabited seven-acre island, six miles ff the cast f Maine, called Easter Egg Rck. The tiny island, accessible nly by rwbat, is free frm predatrs (捕食者) and edged with rcks under which the puffins nest.
Starting in 1973, Kress’s team cllected chicks frm Greet Island, ff the cast f Newfundland, Canada, which had a healthy puffin ppulatin. The team hand -raised puffins in artificial hles, feeding them vitamin-enriched fish twice a day. “They wuld cme ut when they were six weeks ld and they wuld wrk their way t the edge f the island and swim ff,” says Kress.
Fr fur years, hwever, nne f the birds returned t the island t breed (繁殖). The prject’s supprters began t questin whether they wuld ever succeed. “That's when I began trying t think like a puffin,” Kress says.“Puffins nest in clnies because they like being with thers f their kind and large grups prvide prtectin frm predatrs.” He thught that the yung puffins did remember the island but were nt brave t cme ashre. Kress’s new idea was t place wden puffins arund the island, t help the birds feel safe. It wrked.
Thanks t his pineering methd, Prject Puffin says there are nw arund 1,300 pairs f puffins nesting n islands in the Gulf f Maine. What's mre, the techniques Kress develped t save puffins are nw used by seabird cnservatinists arund the wrld.
    17. What happened t Maine’s puffins in the late 19th century?
    A. They were well prtected.B. They were a turist attractin.
    C. They were nearly ging extinct.D. They were raised fr their meat.
    18. Why d Prject Puffin’s rigins lie n Eastern Egg Rck?
    A. It is inaccessible t hunters.
    B. It seems an ideal Puffin habitat.
    C. It is near the Natinal Audubn Sciety.
    D. It seems a perfect place fr bird-watching.
    19. What inspired Kress t think like a puffin?
    A. Finding prper fd fr puffins.
    B. Digging artificial hles fr puffins.
    C. Mving puffin chicks frm Great Island.
    D. Getting adult puffins t breed at Eastern Egg Rck.

If there had t be a father f handwashing in histry, it wuld be Ignaz Semmelweis. While wrking at Vienna General hspital, the Hungarian dctr, faced with a situatin in which maternal death (孕产妇死亡) in hspitals were significantly higher than lcal clinics, tried hard clues as t why.
Germs (细菌) were yet t be discvered, and it was still believed in the 1840s that disease was spread by bad smells in the air. S it didn’t seem a prblem that trainee dctrs hanging ut f labs t dissect (解剖) human bdies wuld pp up t the maternity ward (产房) t deliver a baby withut washing their hands.
Then an accidental finger cut by a knife during a dissectin caused a dctr t die, seemingly f the same sign the mthers had been getting. Semmelweis assumed that smething frm the dead bdies was t blame, which might, thrugh the hands f dctrs, make their way int wmen’ s bdies during childbirth.
T test his thery, he rdered dctrs t wash their hands and instruments in sme chlrine slutin. As a result, the death rate fr new mthers drpped t abut 1 percent, cmpared with that f as high as 18 percent befre the experiment.
Hwever, he faced great resistance, and met a sad end. Peple at that time didn’t think f themselves as srt f walking Petri dishes. And the majrity f dctrs then were frm middle- r upper-class families, and thught f themselves as very clean peple.
Over the next 40 years, a better understanding f germs develped, and attitudes t hygiene (卫生) gradually shifted. In 1876, the German scientist Rbert Kch discvered the anthrax bacillus (炭疽), kicking ff the new research field f medical bacterilgy. Many mre germs were later identified. Surgens started t take handwashing seriusly.
By the 1890s and int the early 1900s, handwashing mved frm being smething dctrs did t smething everybdy had been tld t d.
    21. What was the situatin like in the 1840s?
    A. Germs might have been discvered then.
    B. Wmen suffered frm delivering babies then.
    C. The air at that time was dirty and full f viruses.
    D. Peple were unaware f hw disease was spread.
    22. What des the underlined wrd “Slutin” prbably mean?

Fractinal wnership is a percentage wnership f a specific asset (资产). It has ften been used t share the wnership f expensive assets such as expensive bats, private planes and s n. When the value f the asset increases, the wnership shares d as well. C-wners als share equally the csts carried by the asset. Mst recently, the same cncept f fractinal wnership was applied t art as well. The lgic is the same. Multiple peple wn ne artwrk and share the benefits and the csts f the asset. Galleries and artists, instead f selling ne artwrk t ne persn, they can sell it t mre than 1000 art lvers.
C-wnership f art gives the pssibility t everyne t participate in the art market. The ptential market fr artwrks is suddenly way bigger. Only a few peple can affrd artwrks that cst mre than £100,000. But everyne can affrd t buy sme shares priced at £10 each. On tp f this, all c-wners share the csts invlved with the acquisitin f an artwrk.
