Ladisla Salmerón, a researcher f educatinal psychlgy at the University f Valencia in Spain, and his wrkmates wanted t see if the screen inferirity effect ccurs if yu fcus n handheld devices. S they searched existing studies and analyzed nly data sets cmparing print reading t reading n handheld devices.
Finally, they lked at dzens f studies, pling results frm mre than 100,000 students. As with previus research, they fund students wh read printed texts cnstantly perfrmed slightly better. Althugh small, Salmerón stresses, the effect bserved culd be f great significance. “In explaining this, we must cnsider that children in schls read every day, he says. “S this effect culd be built up ver time.”
Sme scientists are trying t understand the reasns fr the screen inferirity effect. One thery called the shallwing hypthesis (假说) assumes that when reading n digital devices, peple are generally ding s fr shrt perids f time and reading shrt pieces f text, causing them t be less efficient. Anther thery hlds that feeling each page and remembering whether it was at the beginning f the bk r the end can help cnnect with yur memry. But neither thery has been prven.
