18.Standing at the finish line, 70-year-ld Bb Lng spent a while reflecting n the achievement he’d just made. Behind him was the wild, endless
Mnglian grassland extending int the distance. This American had just becme the ldest persn t ever cmplete and win the Mngl Derby, the
wrld’s lngest hrse race.
Lng, a rider all his life, entered the race after being inspired by All the Wild Hrses, a mvie based n the grueling event.
Fearing that he wuldn’t be able t cmplete it, he set abut preparing his mind and bdy fr this “hardest, tughest, mst demanding thing yu
can d n a hrse”, an annual 1000-kilmeter race that was recgnized as the wrld’s lngest hrse race by The Guinness Bk f Recrds in 2011. He
cnfirmed his belief that preparatin can surpass yuth, as sme f the ther riders were less prepared.
Althugh Lng had been riding hrses fr many years, the hardship and uncertainty f the task pushed him t his limit and frced him t depend
entirely n his wn will. The race rganizers had prvided an extensive supprt netwrk t keep an eye n the participants frm afar. Despite that, the
physical strain f riding such a lng distance made simple things like squatting (蹲) dwn at the end f the day almst impssible.
Alng the vast race curse there were unpredictable circumstances beynd Lng’s cntrl, hwever well prepared he’d been. Weather was ne f
them, which culd switch frm heavy rain t burning unexpectedly.
Abve all else, the biggest bstacle was the state f mind. Withut a living sul in sight, Lng was desperate fr interactin, guidance, and cmfrt.
This feeling f lneliness accunted fr his hpe that ne f his fellw cmpetitrs wuld catch up.
Regardless f the hardship, Lng felt a srt f spiritual adventure while traveling thrugh the wilderness. He was prvided with sme memrable
mments while cnnecting with nature. He als grew t lve the cuntry and the cmmunities alng the rute.

19.I met Ariep n an island in the Suth Pacific natin f Vanuatu. Being the last fluent Naati speaker in the area, he srrwfully expressed his fear
that, with his death, the language wuld n lnger exist.
Naati is just an example f endangered language. Tday, 50% t 90% f the wrld’s languages are cnsidered at risk f falling ut f use by the end
f the century.
Over the last 10 years, this crisis has attracted mre public attentin. While we praise previus effrts made t prtect dying indigenus languages
native t specific places and spken by abriginal peple, let’s stp and ask: Why des it matter?
Shuld Naati’s fate cncern the wrld? Many speakers f endangered languages, including Ariep, cmmunicate fluently in ther languages. Is the
hpe f “saving” these small languages just a rmantic idea f unrealistic schlars?
As a linguist, I’m n the ppsite side f thse answering “yes”. I understand hw critical and urgent language lss is. Individual cmmunities
rely n languages t frm culture and identity, and fr the glbal cmmunity, languages are an invaluable surce f infrmatin abut human cgnitin.
If a language is lst, the relevant cmmunity heritage will disappear. Fr instance, peple wh speak Lulamgi in Uganda feel anxius that as peple
frget the terms describing methds f catching and eating white ants, they will als frget this imprtant cultural practice.
Language lss als means a lss f cmmunity identity and self-determinatin. Measuring their exact damage is hard, but the lss indeed harms the
well-being f cmmunity members. By cntrast, the ability f cmmunity members t speak their indigenus language tgether enhances well-being. In
British Clumbia, research has prved that the yung generatins in indigenus cmmunities where at least 50% f the peple speak the native
language tend t exhibit a strnger sense f well-being and mre ptimistic attitudes tward life.
When a language is disappearing mre is lst than just certain bits f infrmatin.
Understanding language is vital t understanding human cgnitin. Every language presents us with a piece f the puzzle fr finding ut hw
language wrks in ur mind, withut which we are prevented frm seeing the full picture.
Fr everyne’s sake, we must preserve the wrld’s languages t ensure linguistic diversity fr future generatins.

20.In recent studies we have been investigating mirrr writing by typical 4-t 6-year-ld children. The term is used because the characters —
numbered and letters — are reversed (颠倒), yet are crrect when lked at in a mirrr.
Fr quite a lng time, the mainstream views n the phenmenn were supprted by the bservatin f left-handed children writing reverse
characters, which was insufficient and misleading as right-handed children d s as well. Even tday, left-handedness is ften the favrite explanatin f
teachers when children prduce mirrr writing.
We find mirrr writing wrks n bth the cerebral(relating t the brain) and the behaviral level. The frmer has lng been limited t the simplistic
1925 thery by Samue Ort n that ne f the cerebral hemispheres (大脑半球) (usually the left) wuld crrectly stre the letters while the ther wuld
stre them in a mirrred frm. Mre recently, hwever, it has been shwn that the brain desn’t cnsider rientatin (方 向) (left r right) when string
images, a prcess called mirrr generalizatin.
This mirrr generalizatin prcess, which can be very useful — fr example, t recgnize a face by bth its left and right sides —leads children t
knw, frm memry, the shape f the characters, but nt their left / right rientatin. It is imprtant t nte that the learning f the frm f characters
by children is mainly visual, and that children prduce almst entirely hrizntal mirrr writing.
At the behaviral level, when children write the characters frm memry, they must give them an. rientatin. In cuntries whse primary languages
are written in Latin characters —written frm left t right — children tend t reverse mainly characters that face the left, such as 7 and q. Hwever, when
children are required t write frm right t left, they instead reverse the right-riented letters. This suggests that children usually rient characters in the
directin f their. writing.
Our explanatin is supprted by analyzing tens f thusands f writing samples frm mre than a thusand children. Nevertheless, many parents
cntinue t believe that mirrr writing might be the indicatr f a disrder such as dyslexia (读写困难), as dctrs may still suggest that mirrr writing by
children is a sign f a develpmental issue. Our research n typical develping children des nt supprt such claims.
【小题1】What des the authr want t shw by mentining the left-handedness view?
