Several new species f trpical（热带的） birds have been fund n far islands in Indnesia. Researchers have discerned the Wakatbi sunbird, a new species that lives n the small Waka-tbi Islands, lcated in central Indnesia. They als studied live-backed sunbirds and black sun-birds and fund that sme f the birds they examined actually belnged t sme previusly un-recgnized species.
The new Wakatbi sunbird lks similar t the live-backed sunbird, but has darker feathers, shrter wings, and a higher-tned sng. Zlgists believe that because it has such shrt wings, it never spread beynd the tiny islands. The live-backed sunbird, hwever, can fly lng distances, s it was able t live in ther lcatins.
"Specifically, we became interested in the Wakatbi sunbird because f the wrk f ErnstHartert, a German bird expert active at the beginning f the 20th century," Finn Marcaigh, ne researcher, says. "He described the Wakatbi sunbird as a ppulatin with unique dark feath-ers, but he and the rest f the scientific cmmunity finally decided that it was nly a subspecies f the widespread live-backed sunbird. We were eager t use mdern methds t put this t the test."
Fr their research, scientists used DNA, recrdings f sngs, and bdy measurement analysis t cmpare the sunbirds they studied. Researchers have discerned the Wakatbi sunbird, a new species that lives n the small Waka-tbi Islands, lcated in central Indnesia. The new Wakatbi sunbird lks similar t the live-backed sunbird, but has darker feathers, shrter wings, and a higher-tned sng. "Specifically, we became interested in the Wakatbi sunbird because f the wrk f ErnstHartert, a German bird expert active at the beginning f the 20th century," Finn Marcaigh, ne researcher, says. "He described the Wakatbi sunbird as a ppulatin with unique dark feath-ers, but he and the rest f the scientific cmmunity finally decided that it was nly a subspecies f the widespread live-backed sunbird. We were eager t use mdern methds t put this t the test."
Fr their research, scientists used DNA, recrdings f sngs, and bdy measurement analysis t cmpare the sunbirds they studied.
