We first discvered ur feathered enemies n Friday mrning. It was early, and the sund the birds made travelled thrugh ur neighbrhd. I figured they’d g away sn. But, n. They were getting luder and prbably annying my neighbrs nearly as much as us with the nise. I admit I gt a little desperate.
Then, n Sunday afternn, I lked ut the kitchen windw t see ur dg Quatchi staring at smething n the grund. I went t explre and fund a small cal-black bird in the grass. Its eyes were milky, and it stayed perfectly still as my dg inched twards it. Only when Quatchi tuched his nse t its head did it walk away. I grabbed the dg and lcked him inside and came back with my camera.
It never ccurred t me that the yung wuld be hanging ut n the grund, grwing and gaining strength as its parents guarded it frm abve. The secnd I saw this little creature I frgave the crws.
T be hnest, I’ve never been much f a bird persn. I als have a healthy respect fr birds, and by healthy I mean slightly fear-based. They’re basically living dinsaurs.
I wish they’d chsen anther backyard. There are nly s many sunny days in Seattle, and I still can’t d any gardening ut there. But I’m als grateful that I gt t see this little bit f nature unfld up clse. It’s pretty amazing.
The experience has als reinfrced my desire t create a beautiful backyard garden that attracts lts f bees, butterflies, and yes, birds. They are welcme here.

Calries are a way f keeping track f the bdy's energy budget. A healthy balance ccurs when we put in abut as much energy as we lse. If we cnsistently put mre energy int ur bdies than we bum, the excess will gradually be stred as fat in ur cells, and well gain weight. If we bum ff mre energy than we replenish, well lse weight. But hw many calries d we actually need? Calrie is just the unit we use t measure the energy we take in r bum.
Calries are used in three ways: abut 10% enables digestin, abut 20% fuels physical activity, and the biggest part, arund 70%, supprts the basic functins f ur rgans. That third usage crrespnds t yur basal metablic rate (基础代谢率), a number f calries yu wuld need t survive if yu weren't eating r mving arund.
Accrding t the fficial guidelines, average persn requires each day 2000 calries fr wmen and 2500 fr men. Thse estimates are based n factrs like average weight, physical activity and muscle mass. S des that mean everyne shuld take in arund 2000 calries? Nt necessarily. If yu're ding an energy cnsuming activity, like cycling the Tur de France, yur bdy culd use up t 9000 calries per day Pregnancy requires slightly mre calries than usual, and elderly peple typically have a slwer metablic rate, energy is burned mre gradually, s less is needed.
And ne thing yu shuld als knw. The calrie cunts n nutritin labels measure hw much energy the fd cntains, nt hw much energy yu can actually get ut f it, Fibrus (纤维的) fds like celery and whle wheat take mre energy t digest, s yu'd actually absrb less energy frm 100 calrie serving f celery than a 100 calrie serving f ptat chips. Nt t mentin the fact that sme fds ffer nutrients like prtein and vitamins, while thers prvide far less nutritinal value. Eating t many f thse fds culd leave yu verweight and malnurished. And even with the exact same fd, different peple might nt get the same number f calries.
S a calrie is a useful energy measure, but t wrk ut exactly hw many f them each f us requires, we need t factr in things like exercise, fd type, and ur bdy's ability t prcess energy.

14.The authr may agree that________.

Smetimes yu’ll hear peple say that yu can’t lve thers until yu lve yurself. Smetimes yu’ll hear peple say that yu can’t expect smene else t lve yu until yu lve yurself. Either way, yu’ve gt t lve yurself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all knw that we’re the apple f ur parents’ eyes, and that ur Grandmas think we’re great talents and ur Uncle Rberts think that we will g t the Olympics. But smetimes it’s a lt harder t think such nice thughts abut urselves. If yu find that believing in yurself is a challenge, it is time yu build a psitive self-image and learn t lve yurself.
Self-image is yur wn mind’s picture f yurself. This image includes the way yu lk, the way yu act, the way yu talk and the way yu think. Interestingly, ur self-images are ften quite different frm the images thers hld abut us. Unfrtunately, mst f these images are mre negative than they shuld be. Thus changing the way yu think abut yurself is the key t changing yur self-image and yur whle wrld.
The best way t defeat a passive self-image is t step back and decide t stress yur successes. That is, make a list if yu need t, but write dwn all f the great things yu d every day. Dn’t allw dubts t ccur in it.
It very well might be that yu are experiencing a negative self-image because yu can’t mve past ne flaw r weakness that yu see abut yurself. Well, rll up yur sleeves and make a change f it as yur primary task. If yu think yu’re silly because yu aren’t gd at math, find a tutr. If yu think yu’re weak because yu can’t run a mile, get t the track and practice. If yu think yu’re dull because yu dn’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clthes. But remember, just because yu think it desn’t mean it’s true.
The best way t get rid f a negative self-image is t realize that yur image is far frm bjective, and t actively cnvince yurself f yur psitive qualities. Changing the way yu think and wrking n thse yu need t imprve will g a lng way twards prmting a psitive self-image. When yu can pat yurself n the back, yu’ll knw yu’re well n yur way. Gd luck!
16.Yu need t build a psitive self-image when yu___________.
A.dare t challenge yurselfB.feel it hard t change yurself
C.are uncnfident abut yurselfD.have a high pinin f yurself

A.have psitive effectsB.are prbably untrue
C.are ften changeableD.have different functins

A.Hw t prepare fr yur success.B.Hw t face challenges in yur life.
C.Hw t build a psitive self-image.D.Hw t develp yur gd qualities.
20.Wh are the intended readers f the passage?
A.Parents.B.Adlescents.C.Educatrs.D.Peple in general.
21.Why nt take a mre measured apprach t a happier, healthier yu? Frm yur ffice t yur bedrm t yur car, these small changes can have a big impact n yur life.
Wake up ten minutes earlier. When yu start yur mrning in a hurry, yu set a stressful tne fr the day. (I’m speaking frm experience here.) Even ten extra minutes in the mrning can help yu feel mre calm, cllected, and ready t face the day.
Spend five minutes in silence r meditatin (冥想). Yu’ll sn realize, whether it’s in the mrning r evening, that five minutes f sitting quietly with yur eyes clsed feels a lt lnger than five minutes. But just this shrt silence can fster a quietness that carries thrugh the day. When things g ff the rails, simply clse yur eyes and recall that earlier quietness.
Walk. Is there ne trip yu’d nrmally make in the car (t wrk, the gym, the stre) that yu can make n ft? Walking saves mney (gd fr yu) and gas (gd fr the envirnment) and burns calries (arund 2,000 steps equal ne mile), which is gd fr yur health.
Tell smene yu lve them. Life is never lng enugh t say this as many times as it shuld be said. Whether yur mther, a friend, a significant ther, r yur dg, make it a habit t tell smene at least nce a day that yu lve him r her. While it may feel strange at first, yu will never regret it.
Stand (r sit) up straight. Gd psture prevents back and neck pain and even build cnfidence. When driving, tilt (倾斜) yur rearview mirrr (后视镜) up a bit. Yu’ll have t sit up t see. At yur desk, the tp f yur cmputer screen shuld be at eye level. Put a small cushin in the curve f yur lwer back, and yur spine (脊柱) will becme straight.
①What des the text mainly talk abut? (N mre than 10 wrds)
