I've lved t sew all my life. I started sewing clthes fr my dlls when I was 7. My mther shwed me hw t stitch with a needle and thread, and it was my favrite pastime when it was t cld and snwy t play utside. As a teenager, I began t design and sew my wn utfits. I cut ut paper patterns t cnstruct dresses and skirts, and I'd sit at the ld sewing machine fr hurs.
In my late 20s, I began t buy used and vintage clthes t upcycle and refashin. My favrite places t buy vintage clthes are thrift shps(旧货店)and church rummage sales(教堂义卖).
Hwever, abut 10 years ag, when I was ripping ut the silk lining(内衬)frm a beautiful lng blue evening dress, I stpped. There was a hidden pcket in the frnt that I failed t ntice as I merrily ripped at the seams. I pulled ut an ld pht f a yung wman wearing the very same blue evening dress. A lng silver chain necklace hung gracefully dwn the frnt f the dress, and she was hlding a black purse. She had a sft smile, and she lked t be in her early 20s.
Smebdy else wre this dress many years ag. Wh was she? Did she wear it t the theater? T a fancy dinner party? And I was nw tearing it apart. I felt guilty.
I mentined my cncerns and guilt t my daughter. She said, "Mm, yu shuld be prud f yur upcycling and yur sewing creatins. Yu are keeping clthes ut f the landfill(垃圾填埋场), and yu're creating new fashins. Cnsider it a bnus(意外收获)if yu find bjects in the pckets. The clthes are talking t yu!"
I decided t pay hmage t this upcycling discvery -and the many thers I've fund ver the years—by displaying them n a bulletin bard in my sewing rm. These discveries have made me enjy refashining and upcycling clthes even mre. But I have learned t be a little gentler when I rip seams pen with my scissrs, and I apprach pckets mre carefully.

Peple's first memries are all autbigraphical(自传式的), r memries f significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn't happen befre the age f 2 r 3. In fact, mst peple can't remember things frm the first few years f their lives—a phenmenn researchers have called infantile amnesia.
Hwever, research suggests that infants can frm ther kinds f memries. Within the first few days f life, infants can recall their wn mther's face and distinguish it frm the face f a stranger. A few mnths later, infants can demnstrate that they remember lts f familiar faces by smiling mst at the nes they see mst ften.
But if s, why d peple experience infantile amnesia? Thugh it still isn't clear whether it's because we can't frm autbigraphical memries, r whether we just have n way t retrieve(找回)them, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autbigraphical memries require yu t have sme sense f self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirrr recgnitin task called the ruge test. It invlves marking a baby's nse with a spt f red lipstick.
Researchers then place the infant in frnt f a mirrr. Infants yunger than 18 mnths just smile at the baby in the reflectin, nt shwing any evidence f recgnizing themselves r the red mark n their face. Between 18 and 24 mnths, infants tuch their wn nse, even lking embarrassed, suggesting that they cnnect the red dt in the mirrr with their wn face-they start t frm sme sense f self.
Anther pssible explanatin is that because infants dn't have language until later in the secnd year f life, they can't frm narratives abut their wn lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippcampus(海马体). which is the regin f the brain that's largely respnsible fr memry, isn't fully develped in the infancy perid.
Scientists will cntinue t investigate hw these factrs might cntribute t infantile amnesia.

B. Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces.
C. Remember a string f events frm the recent past.
D. Identify their wn reflectins in the mirrr.

A. See their reflectins as themselves. B. Ignre the marks n their faces.
C. Enjy playing with their reflectins. D. Shw a strng interest in the mirrr.
25. What culd be a cause f infantile amnesia, accrding t the text?
A. Infants" inability t recall memries.
B. Infants' immature hippcampus.
C. Infants' undevelped cmmunicatin skills.
D. Infants' unsteady autbigraphical memries.
26. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. When d babies start remembering things?
B. Why is it hard t retrieve lst memries?
C. Hw d kids frm their first memries?

Give yurself a test. Which way is the wind blwing? Hw many kinds f wildflwers can be seen frm yur frnt dr? If yur awareness is as sharp as it culd be, yu'll have n truble answering these questins.
Mst f us bserved much mre as children than we d as adults. A child's day is filled with fascinatin newness and wnder. Curisity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctins that were sharp t us as children becme unclear, we are numb(麻木的)t new stimulatin(刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art f seeing the wrld arund us is quite simple, althugh it takes practice and requires breaking sme bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is t stp predicting what we are ging t see and feel befre it ccurs. This blcks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rcky Muntains with sme students, I mentined that we were ging t crss a muntain stream. The students began cmplaining abut bw cld it wuld be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almst knee-deep when they realised it was a bt spring. Later they all admitted they'd felt cld water at first.
Anther blck t awareness is the bsessin(痴迷)many f us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers wh sptted a bird, immediately lked it up in field guides, and said, a "ruby-crwned kinglet" and checked it ff. They n lnger paid attentin t the bird and never learned what it was ding.
The pressures f "time" and "destinatin" are further blcks t awareness. I encuntered many hikers wh were headed t a distant camp-grund with just enugh time t get there befre dark. it seldm ccurred t them t wander a bit, t take a mment t see what's arund them. I asked them what they'd seen. "Oh, a few birds," they said. They seemed bent n their destinatins.
Nature seems t unfld t peple wh watch and wait. Next time yu take a walk, n matter where it is, take in all the sights, sunds and sensatins. Wander in this frame f mind and yu will pen a new dimensin t yur life.

C. T fllw the teacher's advice. D. T admit mistakes hnestly.
29. The bird watchers' behaviur shws that they_________.
A. are very patient in their bservatin B. are really fascinated by nature
C. care nly abut the names f birds D. questin the accuracy f the field guides
30. In the passage, the authr intends t tell us we shuld_________.
A. feel the wnders f the wrld with all ur senses
B. get rid f sme bad habits in ur daily life
