In 2019. after retiring frm her career as a scial wrker, Ane Freed-Kernis decided t build a hme wrkshp and devte all f her free time t stne carving (雕刻). "I might be cvered head t te in dust but I'm happy-it was smething I needed mre f in my life when I hit 60," she says.
This appeal has its rigins in Freed-Kernis' childhd. Grwing up n her father's farm in Denmark, she used t wander thrugh the fields with her eyes fixed n the grund, lking fr stnes t add t her cllectin. "I've always been drawn t the shapes and textures (质地) f stnes," she says.
After mving t England in 1977 and training as a scial wrker, Freed-Kernis sn became ccupied with her busy career and the demands f raising her sn. Stnes were the last thing n her mind, until her father died in 2005. "He tk a stne carving curse in his retirement, and I always thught stne seemed s fun but never had the time t lk int it myself," she says. "After he died, I became determined t learn in his hnur."

With munting evidence that nanplastic particles (纳米塑料微粒) are in ur bdies, there is grwing cncern ver their ptential health impacts. Nw a new study finds a relatin between nanplastics in the brain and a higher risk fr Parkinsn's disease.
Nanplastics appear when the plastic packaging breaks dwn int small pieces. These particles can enter the bld and crss the bld-brain barrier, with Eurpean researchers reprting earlier this year that in animal experiments, it can take tw hurs r less fr certain nanplastics t reach the brain after being eaten.
In humans, it's lng been thught that envirnmental factrs play a rle in Parkinsn's disease but specific causes are still unclear. The new study frm the Duke University Schl f Medicine details hw nanplastics cause chemical changes in the brain that can, in turn, make Parkinsn's and related types f diseases mre likely.
That's because the nanplastics attract a prtein (蛋白质) called alpha-synuclein, knwn t play a rle in Parkinsn's and related disrders. In lab and animal studies, the plastic's interactin with it leads t increases in the affected neurns in the brain. This interactin appears related t favrable cnditins in which Parkinsn's can develp.
