Grwing up in suburbia, yard wrk was punishment. I’d take almst anything else. I didn’t like being utside, and I especially didn’t like bugs r
dirt.
When I left hme at 17 with a backpack f belngings, I figured my gardening days were behind me. There were n yards t wrk in - nly cncrete!
The cncrete jungle that awaited me seemed like a welcme escape frm the utdr chres that had nce felt like a sentence.
It wasn’t until my mid-20s that I, thinking it was the adult thing t d, brught hme a small daisy (雏菊) in a pt t put n my fire escape. Less
than 24 hurs later, a squirrel (松鼠) arrived and dragged it away, pt and all. That’s New Yrk fr yu! I tk it as a sign and didn’t try any mre plants
in that apartment.
When I married, my wife and I bught a huse in uter Brklyn. There was enugh rm t have a garden if we wanted ne. We decided t see if
we culd grw anything, mstly fr the nvelty factr. Much t my surprise, digging in the dirt felt like fun and ttally nt a chre! In the early mrnings,
I wuld bend dwn t inspect the sil waiting fr the plants t appear. Watering at dusk, I whispered t the baby plants, expecting them t keep
grwing. The plants kept the neighbrhd squirrels fed and prvided a place fr bumblebees t nap. I felt a rush f pwer and excitement.
As the flwers and vegetables blmed, I nticed smething in me was grwing as well. Since running away frm hme as a teenager, I’ve always
dne my best t build a shelter fr myself wherever I was living. I hung pictures n the walls. I built new hliday traditins with friends. I painted the
walls bright clrs. But it always felt like maybe that deep cnnectin t a particular space was missing. In gardening, I finally fund this new layer f
depth. I guess yu culd say I was putting dwn rts.
There is an inspiring, self-care practice in the time and energy it takes t plant, water, and wait and wait t see if the magic happens. It’s the act f
grwing that I find the sweetest.

The rechargeable lithium-in (锂离子) battery market is wrth mre than $50 billin. Lithium-in batteries, whse demand cntinues t g up
day by day, are used in a wide range f electrnic devices. They are made f fur main cmpnents, and cathde (阴极) is ne f them. The cathde's
active material type is what determines the capacity f a battery.
A recent study, led by Wang Yan, a material scientist f Wrcester Plytechnic Institute, finds that lithium-in batteries made with recycled cathdes
wrk better than thse with new cathdes.
“The battery industry is expected t grw sharply in the next decade. This high demand has led cmpanies t g t extremes, like increasing deep-
sea mining, t gain access t the minerals used in lithium-in batteries, ” Wang said. “Mining minerals will have envirnmental impacts. Recycling
spent lithium-in batteries ffers a way ut. ”
But until nw, the prspect f using recycled materials in lithium-in batteries has sme manufacturers (制造商) wrrying that it culd impact
perfrmance. Thus, lithium-in batteries are still nt widely recycled. Aware f decreasing resurces and envirnmental impact, Wang and ther
researchers set ut t find a way t make recycling lithium-in batteries ecnmically practical. Thrugh experiments, they culd recver mre than 90%
f the key metals frm spent batteries. These recvered metals became the basis f the new recycled battery's cathde's active material.
In tests between Wang's team's recycled batteries and brand-new batteries f the same cmpsitin, the recycled batteries utperfrm the new nes
in their ability t maintain capacity. It tk 11, 600 charge cycles fr recycled cathde batteries t lse 30 percent f their riginal capacity. That was
abut 50 percent better than the 7, 600 bserved cycles fr new cathde batteries, the team reprted. Thse thusands f extra cycles culd translate
int years f better battery perfrmance, even after repeated use and recharging.

A.They are high in price.
B.They are in great demand.
C.They are limited in use.

Wuldn’t it be wnderful t travel t a freign cuntry withut having t wrry abut the headache f cmmunicating in a different language?
In a recent Wall Street Jurnal article, technlgy plicy expert Alec Rss argued that, within ten years r s,we wuld be able t cmmunicate
with ne anther thrugh small earpieces with built-in micrphnes. That’s because technlgical prgress is extremely fast. It’s nly a matter f time.
Such is the belief amng certain parents that the technlgy is imminent and they’re wndering if their kids shuld learn a secnd language.
It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy f the data laded int cmputers will make them cleverer at translating “Nes Buen
drmer much” int “It’s nt gd t sleep t much”. Replacing a wrd with its equivalent(对等词)in the target language is actually the easy part f
a translatr’s jb. But even this seems t be a difficult jb fr cmputers.
It’s s hard fr cmputers because translatin desn’t — r shuldn’t — invlve simply translating wrds,sentences r paragraphs. Rather,
it’s abut translating meaning. And in rder t infer meaning frm a specific expressin, peple need t understand a lt f infrmatin all at nce.
Think abut all the related clues that help us understand what smene is trying t say: vlume, gesture, situatins, and even yur culture. All are likely
t cnvey as much meaning as the wrds yu use.
Therefre, we shuld dubt a machine that can’t understand ur wrld like we d. If peple frm different cultures can upset each ther withut
realizing it, hw can we expect a machine t d better? Unless engineers actually find a way t breathe a sul int a cmputer, undubtedly when it
cmes t cnveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take ur place.
【小题1】What des the underlined wrd “imminent” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A.Ready.
B.Cnfusing.
C.Unpractical.
D.Cming.
【小题2】Why is it hard fr cmputers t replace a wrd with its equivalent?
A.The real meaning f wrds can vary.
B.Their data is nt rich enugh.
C.Their accuracy needs big imprvement.
D.A man’s sul hasn’t been breathed in them.
【小题3】What view des the authr hld abut translatin?
A.Prper translatin can be difficult fr cmputers.
B.Slight differences desn’t matter in translatin.
C.Machines will translate ur wrld prperly.
D.Cultures need mre attentin than wrds used.
【小题4】What is the best title fr the text?
A.An Expert’s Predictin.
B.Travel withut Headache.
C.The Pleasure f Translatin.
D.Will the Language Barrier(障碍) Actually Fall?

【小题3】
Write ntes and explain it in a way that makes sense t a five-year-ld. If yu’d rather avid actually teaching smene, yu can

While teaching yu may discver gaps in yur understanding.
【小题4】
Review yur ntes, reread bks, r seek external help t ensure yu
have a cmplete understanding f the cntext befre mving frward.
Nw that yu fully grasp the cncept, test yur understanding by trying t teach it t anther persn. This will help yu identify any remaining areas
f uncertainty yu need t revisit.
The Feynman Technique is a great way fr kids and grwn-ups t learn.
【小题5】
