Jilin is nt a place that was ever high up n my list f places that I wanted t g t in China, but after visiting it I can cnfidently say it shuld be at the tp f yurs.
My first stp was the Jingyuetan Natinal Frest Park, situated in the sutheast f Changchun city. The freshness and calmness f this park was idyllic, with pckets f peple ut fr their afternn run r just getting sme alne time. I was taken t a cable lift that tk me up t ne f the highest pints and gt t tbggan (长雪橇) dwn the hill side, which I had dne nce befre beside the Great Wall f China, but this time I was in amng the trees and wilderness.
The frestry in Jilin is secnd t nne, which was evident when I visited the Changchun Zlgical and Btanical Gardens, featuring multiple parades and perfrmances, but my favrite f all was the glwing lantern sculptures decrated arund and in amng the greenery. I was frtunate enugh t dress up in sme f the perfrmance cstumes. I have attended a perfrming arts academy fr many years, s I was ver the mn when greeted by perfrmers in Siping.
My last day in Jilin was a day f relaxatin. I started the day by rafting dwn a lcal river, where butterflies adrned the trees like Christmas decratins. Frm here I made the jurney t a rural frest t partake in the intangible cultural heritage prtectin prject f ginseng picking. A master guided me int the frest in search f the rt plant and shwed me the crrect way t unearth the rts. The practice can nly be dne during tw mnths f the year and the rest is left fr the ginseng t grw back. It can take many years fr the ginseng t grw t a prfitable size.
My expectatins were blwn up t the muntains in Jilin as the peple here shwed me all warmth and genersity, sharing their wnderful prvince with me. It is mst definitely a place I’m itching t climb back int.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is shwing prmise in earthquake predictin, challenging the lng-held belief that it is impssible. Researchers at the University f Texas, Austin, have develped an AI algrithm (算法) that crrectly predicted 70% f earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and prvided accurate calculatins fr the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their methd succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning apprach. The AI was prvided with a set f statistical (统计的) features based n the team’s knwledge f earthquake physics, and then instructed t train itself using a five-year database f earthquake recrdings. Once trained, the AI prvided its predictin f earthquake by listening fr signs f incming earthquakes within the backgrund rumblings (隆隆声) in the Earth.
This wrk is clearly a milestne in research fr AI-driven earthquake predictin. “Yu dn’t see earthquakes cming,” explains Alexandrs Savvaidis, a senir research scientist wh leads the Texas Seismlgical Netwrk Prgram (TexNet). “It’s a matter f millisecnds ( 毫秒), and the nly thing yu can cntrl is hw prepared yu are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and culd help minimize ecnmic and human lsses and has the ptential t remarkably imprve earthquake preparatin wrldwide.”
While it is unknwn whether the same apprach will wrk at ther places, the researchers are cnfident that their AI algrithm culd prduce mre accurate predictins if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking netwrks. S, their next step is t test artificial intelligence in different places in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake statins there and ver six years’ wrth f cntinuus recrds, making it ideal fr these purpses.
Eventually, the authrs hpe t cmbine the system with physics-based mdels. This strategy culd prve especially imprtant where data is pr r lacking. “That may be a lng way ff, but many advances such as this ne, taken tgether, are what mves science frward,” cncludes Sctt Tinker, the bureau’s directr.
8. Hw des the AI predict earthquakes?
A. By analyzing backgrund sunds in the Earth.
B. By identifying data frm remte sensing satellite.
C. By mdeling data based n earthquake recrdings.
D. By mnitring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
9. What des Alexandrs Savvaidis intend t shw in paragraph 3?
A The ways t reduce lsses in earthquakes.
B. The accuracy f AI in earthquake predictin.
C. The limitatin f AI algrithms in earthquake predictin.
D. The significance f develping AI-driven earthquake predictin.
10. What des the fllw-up research fcus n?
A. Cnducting tests in different lcatins.
B. Building mre earthquake statins in Texas.
C. Imprving the quality f earthquake tracking netwrks.
D. Applying AI apprach t ther fields besides earthquake.
11. Which wrds can best describe the earthquake-predicting technlgy?
A. Precise but utdated.B. Effective but cstly.
C. Advanced and prmising.D. Ptential and ecnmical.
D
Turn n a light utside at night and it wn’t be lng befre lts f insects start gathering arund it. This behavir has led t a ppular cmparisn fr attractin, “like a mth t a flame.” Hwever, accrding t a new study published in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins, it turns ut that insects aren’t “attracted” t artificial lights, but rather cnfused by it.
The new finding is based n a thery abut insect rientatin (定位). Due t their small and lightweight bdies, insects experience less air resistance, allwing them t achieve higher acceleratins (加速度), which in turn makes it challenging fr them t sense up and dwn during flight. S, they typically rely n stable light surces like the mn and stars t rient themselves at night, keeping the sky at their backs t stay upright. Hwever, the intrductin f artificial lights cnfuses their natural sense f directin. The insects yu see circling street lights, in ther wrds, are prbably lst.
T reach these cnclusins, scientists used high-reslutin cameras t film insects flying arund artificial lights in Csta Rica. They als attached tiny sensrs t insects and filmed mtin-capture vides f them in flight. In this way, researchers can slw dwn the insects pace and study their mvements in greater detail. The vides shwed insects turning their backs tward surces f artificial light—even at the price f flipping ver r crashing.
This can be dangerus fr insects, as circling arund artificial lights can put them at risk frm enemies, exhaustin, and starvatin, causing many t die befre mrning. Night artificial light is a majr cause f insect ppulatin lss, which culd severely impact crp pllinatin and fd supplies fr larger animals, including humans. “Insects have been flying arund fr 370 millin years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gne wrng fr them,” says entmlgist Samuel Fabian f Imperial Cllege Lndn. “If we dn’t want t influence large amunts f insect ppulatins, we shuld nt have lights shining up int the sky.”
12. What have scientists fund ut abut insects?
A Artificial lights can disturb their sense f directin.
B. Their ppulatins are in decline.
C. They ften fly quickly during the night.
D. Their eyesight is well adapted t light changes.
13. Hw did the scientists cnduct the experiment?
A. By detecting the living envirnment f insects.
B. By mnitring the insects’ brain activity during flight.
C. By making vides t study insects’ mvements.
D. By building mdels t analyze insects’ mtin patterns.
14. Why des the authr mentin Fabian’s wrds in the last paragraph?
A. T stress the imprtance f insects t fd supplies.
B. T appeal t peple t reduce light pllutin.
C. T shw the reasns fr insects flying arund lights.
D. T explain the effects f insects’ death n human life.
15. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. Hw Artificial Lights Impact the Ecsystem
B. What Leads t the Lss f Insect Ppulatins
C. Hw Insects Orient Themselves in the Flight
D. Why Insects are Attracted t Lights at Night
