As the greenery returns, West Lake Lngjing tea enters its harvesting perid. And in ne Hangzhu tea garden, huge mechanical arms have taken ver the picking f tea leaf buds (芽). The arms belng t a smart tea-picking rbt develped by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. After five years f research and develpment, it has made its first appearance this year. The rbt’s creatin was driven by a labr shrtage, with Zhejiang prvince facing a shrtage f abut 400,000 pickers.
“The rbt cntains an intelligent recgnitin mdel that was develped thrugh learning frm a large database f tea bud images,” said Prfessr Chen Jianneng. This allws the rbt t autmatically recgnize tea buds with a success rate f mre than 90 percent.
With a pull and a suck (吸), the rbtic arm separates the buds frm the branches and then puts them int a temprary strage bx. Once all the buds in the target area have been cllected, the picked buds will be passed frm the temprary strage bx t the machine’s final cllectin bx.
Althugh it sunds easy, the harvesting prcess still faces limitatins. Accrding t Chen, factrs such as a variety f prductin areas and weather cnditins can affect the machine’s recgnitin abilities. Wet n tea leaves can cause the buds t stick t the walls f the tube when being sucked int the temprary strage bx, leading t blckages. Additinally, the rbt is currently limited t wrking n flat grund and slpes (斜坡) under 15 degrees, but many tea plants are grwn n high muntains. These are prblems that future mdels f tea-picking rbts will have t vercme.
“We believe that harvesting rbts will be a majr future trend,” said Wu Chuanyu, leader f the research team. He added that in an ptimistic scenari, abut five years frm nw, machines will be available n the market t replace manual (人工) labr in the harvesting f West Lake Lngjing tea in flat areas.

The clthing industry is the secnd-highest plluter f water. Factries f fast fashin pured pisnus chemicals int clean water supplies because clthing prductin is a land-and water-intensive industry, respnsible fr 10% f all carbn release glbally. Even after the clthes are prduced in factries, they can still affect the envirnment. Fr example, plyester (涤纶) can release plastic micrfibres int the water system, which cntributes t the already existing plastic prblem.
The fashin industry is indeed causing great harm t the envirnment; mrever, the clthes being made are nt meant t last. In mst cases, the quality is nt there, and the clthes are nly used a few times befre being discarded. Befre the rise f fast fashin, clthes were made t last and were nt meant t have the high turnver that clthes have.
There are many designers wh are cmmitted t mass-prducing their clthes in sustainable ways. As the greenery returns, West Lake Lngjing tea enters its harvesting perid. And in ne Hangzhu tea garden, huge mechanical arms have taken ver the picking f tea leaf buds (芽). The arms belng t a smart tea-picking rbt develped by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University. After five years f research and develpment, it has made its first appearance this year. The rbt’s creatin was driven by a labr shrtage, with Zhejiang prvince facing a shrtage f abut 400,000 pickers.
“The rbt cntains an intelligent recgnitin mdel that was develped thrugh learning frm a large database f tea bud images,” said Prfessr Chen Jianneng. This allws the rbt t autmatically recgnize tea buds with a success rate f mre than 90 percent.
With a pull and a suck (吸), the rbtic arm separates the buds frm the branches and then puts them int a temprary strage bx. Once all the buds in the target area have been cllected, the picked buds will be passed frm the temprary strage bx t the machine’s final cllectin bx.
Althugh it sunds easy, the harvesting prcess still faces limitatins. Accrding t Chen, factrs such as a variety f prductin areas and weather cnditins can affect the machine’s recgnitin abilities. Wet n tea leaves can cause the buds t stick t the walls f the tube when being sucked int the temprary strage bx, leading t blckages. Additinally, the rbt is currently limited t wrking n flat grund and slpes (斜坡) under 15 degrees, but many tea plants are grwn n high muntains. These are prblems that future mdels f tea-picking rbts will have t vercme.

Even after the clthes are prduced in factries, they can still affect the envirnment. Fr example, plyester (涤纶) can release plastic micrfibres int the water system, which cntributes t the already existing plastic prblem.
The fashin industry is indeed causing great harm t the envirnment; mrever, the clthes being made are nt meant t last. In mst cases, the quality is nt there, and the clthes are nly used a few times befre being discarded.
