1、定义：表示过去某一时刻或某一时间段内正在进行或发生的动作。2、结构：主语+was/ were +动词ing形式 （注：当主语是第一人称单数或第三人称单数用was，其余人称用were）
（以下示例以wrk为例子）
【拓展知识】：过去进行时与频度副词连用（always，ften，usually等），表示喜爱、讨厌、埋怨等感情色彩。e.g： My mum was always frgetting things. （表示埋怨） They was always helping children. （表示赞扬）
3、易混淆点辨析：when和while
1、when的用法：when意为＂当……的时候＂，可表示时间点或时间段，主句用过去进行时，从句用一般过去时。从句中的谓语动词可以是延续性动词，也可以是短暂性动词。e.g： I was reading a bk when she came int my rm. 她走进我房间时，我正在看书。
2、while的用法：while意为＂当……的时候＂，只表示时间段，从句谓语动词必须用延续性动词。① 表示过去某个动作发生时,另一个动作正在进行： 主句用一般过去时，从句用过去进行时。e.g： While Jim was mending his bike, Lin Ta came t see him. 吉姆正在修他的自行车时，林涛来看他了。② 表示过去某两个延续性动作同时进行： 主句用过去进行时，从句用过去进行时。e.g：While he was waiting fr the bus, he was reading a newspaper. 他边等车边看报纸。（两个动作都是延续性的）

4、过去进行时与一般过去时
过去进行时：表示过去某一时刻或某一时间段内正在进行或发生的动作，强调动作正在进行。一般过去时：表示过去发生的动作或存在的状态，多指动作已经完成。e.g： I was watching TV this time yesterday.（强调过去这个时间正在看电视） I watched TV yesterday.（强调昨天看电视，已经看完。）
5、不能用进行时的情况
1、表心理状态、情感的动词：lve，hate，like，care，prefer，knw等2、表示存在、状态的动词：appear，exist，remain，stand等。3、表示感觉的动词：see，hear，feel，smell，sund，taste等。4、表示人的期待、允诺、拒绝、结束的词：accept，allw，admit，decide，refuse，prmise等。
