One f these investigatins is the Cmplement f Integrated Prtcls fr Human Explratin Research prgram, r CIPHER, which is intended t help researchers understand hw living in space changes human health and psychlgy.
On Earth, gravity keeps bld and ther fluids relatively lw in the bdy. Onbard the ISS, O’Hara says astrnauts keep tab s n these ptential health risks, perfrming regular eye exams and ultrasunds t cllect data. The hpe is t use this data nt nly fr micrgravity research, but als fr research n Earth. Fr example, researchers knw astrnauts lse abut 1% t 2% f their bne density per mnth during spaceflight. S, O’Hara and her team are analyzing bne marrw stem cells in rder t better understand bth this bne lss and nrmal aging n Earth.

“Wait a minute!” I shuted ludly. “That’s my dg. Dn’t call the pund.” All the Winn-Dixie emplyees turned arund and lked at me, and I knew I had dne smething big. And maybe stupid, t. But I culdn’t help it. I culdn’t let that dg g t the pund. “Here, by,” I said. The dg stpped licking the manager’s face and put his ears up in the air and lked at me, like he was trying t remember where he knew me frm. “Here, by,” I said again. And then I figured that the dg was prbably just like everybdy else in the wrld, that he wuld want t get called by a name. I didn’t knw what his name was, s I just said the first thing that came int my head. I said, “Here, Winn-Dixie.” And that dg came trtting ver t me just like he had been ding it his whle life.
The manager sat up and stared at me, like maybe I was making fun f him. “It’s his name,” I said. “Hnest.” The manager said, “Dn’t yu knw nt t bring a dg int a grcery stre?” “Yes, sir, he gt in by mistake. I’m srry. It wn’t happen again,” I tld him. “Cme n, Winn-Dixie,” I said t the dg. I started walking and he fllwed alng behind me as I went ut f the prduce department and dwn the cereal aisle and past all the cashiers and ut the dr. Once we were safe utside, I checked him ver carefully and he didn’t lk that gd. He was big, but skinny; yu culd see his ribs. And there were bald patches all ver him, places where he didn’t have any fur at all. Mstly, he lked like a big piece f ld brwn carpet that had been left ut alne in the rain. He was an ugly dg, but already, I lved him with all my heart.
