Researchers have created a device that uses brain waves t translate what paralyzed (瘫痪的) peple wh can’t speak intend t say int sentences. The device, created by a team at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc, analyzes brain waves t decde what a patient is trying t say and then displays the text n a cmputer screen.
Vlunteering t test the device was a man in his late 30s wh 15 years ag suffered a brain-stem strke that caused widespread paralysis and rbbed him f speech.
The researchers implanted electrdes (电极) n the surface f the man’s brain, ver the area that cntrls speech. A cmputer analyzed the patterns when he attempted t say cmmn wrds such as “water” r “gd”, eventually becming able t differentiate between 50 wrds that culd generate mre than 1, 000 sentences.
Prmpted (提示) with questins such as “Hw are yu tday?” r “Are yu thirsty?”, the device eventually enabled the man t answer “I am very gd” r “N, I am nt thirsty”—nt vicing the wrds but translating them int text, the team said.
It takes abut three t fur secnds fr the wrds t appear n the screen after the man tries t say them. That’s nt nearly as fast as speaking, but quicker than tapping ut a respnse.
Harvard neurlgists Leigh Hchberg and Sydney Cash called the wrk a “pineering demnstratin”. They said, “If the technlgy pans ut, it eventually culd help peple with injuries, strkes r illnesses like Lu Gehrig’s disease whse brains prepare messages fr delivery but thse messages are trapped.”
The team has spent years mapping the brain activity that leads t speech. Hw did they knw the device interpreted the man’s wrds crrectly? They started by having him try t say specific sentences such as, “Please bring my glasses,” rather than answering pen-ended questins until the machine translated accurately mst f the time.
Next steps include ways t imprve the device’s speed, accuracy and vcabulary size -and maybe ne day allw a cmputer-generated vice rather than text n a screen — while testing a small number f additinal vlunteers.
28. What d we knw abut the device in the text?
A. It can make paralyzed peple speak again. B. It was implanted int a man’s heart.
C. It can prduce wrds n a screen. D. It can help restre patients’ lst memry.
29. What des the underlined wrd “differentiate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. learn B. distinguish C. rganize D. speak
30. Which f the fllwing may the researchers f the team agree with?
A. The device may have a prmising future.
B. The device can d anything fr paralyzed peple.
C. In the future the device can prduce pictures n a cmputer.
D. In the future the device can be affrdable t mre peple.
31. What may be the best title f the text?
A. Researchers Fund Gd Methds t Help Paralyzed Patients.
B. Device Uses Brain Waves f Paralyzed Man t Help Him Cmmunicate.
C. Paralyzed Man Cmmunicates Nrmally with a Speech-aided Device.
D. Repeated Questins Given t Paralyzed Man Make Device Mre Intelligent.

T survive in the desert, a camel needs bth sweat and fur. That’s accrding t engineer Jeffrey Grssman f the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy. “If it didn’t have the fur, it wuld sweat t quickly and run ut f water, which is a really precius resurce fr the camel,” says Grssman. The engineer wndered if he culd mimic (模仿) the camel’s sweat glands (汗腺) and fur by laying tw materials. In a new research appearing tday in the jurnal Jule, Grssman details the new innvative technlgy that culd be used t keep fd and medical supplies cld withut requiring additinal energy.
Fr the bttm layer f the camel-inspired system, Grssman used hydrgel, a highly absrbent netwrk that is super-charged with water. As water evaprates (蒸发) frm hydrgel, the liquid cls the surface it’s n. The tp layer Grssman created is cmpsed f aergel, a prus (多孔的) structure that makes the material mre than 90 percent air—earning the substance the title f “the wrld’s lightest slid.” Aergel acts like the camel’s fur, slwing water evapratin fr sustained cling pwer.
Grssman knew that the layer atp the hydrgel had t be bth insulating (起隔热作用的) and prus s that water culd evaprate thrugh it. If the insulating layer was t thin, it wuld fail t insulate the hydrgel frm surrunding heat. If the aergel layer was t thick r nt prus enugh, the hydrgel’s water culdn’t evaprate, and the technlgy wuld lse its cling pwer. By slwing evapratin, yu get mre ut f each drp f water.
During their experiment, Grssman and his team placed a heat sensr beneath the layers and placed the system in a temperature-cntrlled rm. The sensr mnitred the temperature beneath the hydrgel ver time as liquid evaprated int the 30℃rm. The team cmpared their camel-inspired creatin t a single layer f uncvered hydrgel. Grssman fund that the layered materials extended cling time by 400 percent.
“While hydrgel and aergel are nt new, cmbining them in this way is innvative,” says Ky-Chul Kenneth Park, an engineer at Nrthwestern University. Like Grssman, Park is ptimistic that it culd be used t insulate surface like windws.
32. Which aspect f the camel inspired the new technlgy?
A. Its heat-prf fur. B. Its water-resistant ability.
C. Its lw-energy cnsumptin. D. Its well-develped sweat glands.
33. What is gd abut the bttm layer f Grssman’s innvatin?
A. It’s extremely thin. B. It’s a prus structure.
C. It takes in water easily. D. It slws water evapratin.
34. What is stressed in the furth paragraph?
A. The cling pwer f Grssman’s innvatin.
B. Slutins t cling technlgy challenges.
C. Differences between hydrgel and aergel.
D. The vital functins f a heat sensr.
35. What des Park say abut Grssman’s wrk?
A. It culd be further imprved in many ways.
B. It has benefited frm tw types f new materials.
C. It has cntributed a lt t windw prductin.
D. It has creatively put tw cmmn materials tgether.
