Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer the questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is the essence f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw distinctly different views f humanity. The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll(1984) made the interesting claim that humans' essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving allws. Thse wh frgive are against their basic nature, much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hatred and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are estranged(疏远) accept yur lve and frgiveness and are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a Classical philsphical perspective, that f Aristtle, we see the distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving, its actual apprpriatin in cnflict situatins, develps with practice.
28. What is Drll's idea abut frgiveness?
A. Aggressive peple shuld learn t frgive thers.
B. Peple shuld ffer mercy t anyne else.
C. Peple frgiving thers have their welfare affected.
D. Frgiveness depends n the nature f humanity.
29. What des the example in paragraph 2 illustrate?
A. T fight is t grw. B. T give is t receive.
C. T frgive is t lve. D. T dminate is t harm.
30. What is the writer's attitude tward frgiveness?
A. Reserved. B. Favrable. C. Skeptical. D. Objective.
31. What is the message cnveyed in the last paragraph?
A. Actuality is based n ptentiality. B. Frgiveness is in ur nature.
C. Frgiveness grws with time. D. It takes practice t frgive.

Accrding t legend, the first-ever marathn was s exhausting that the Greek messenger, wh dashed 40km frm the battlefield t Athens, cllapsed and died. Over the past 2,500 years, humans have becme better at running. Eight f the ten fastest times in female marathn have been recrded since 2022. This can t a large extent be explained by the develpment f a new generatin f hyper-buncy running shes —“super-shes”— that ffer athletes greater assıstance. Such has been the imprvement that sme have questined whether the technlgy is nw t dminant.
N dubt that athletes are breaking recrds because f their ftwear. Bth Nike and Adidas have persuaded Wrld Athletics t permit shes with chunky, fam sles(鞋底), which act as springs. When their feet cmpress the super-shes int the grund, the runners receive mre energy as they push ff again. In 2017 Nike annunced the new technlgy allwed athletes t use 4% less energy than they wuld if wearing a regular she.
Thse wh wuld like the shes banned wrry that the balance between the runners' ability and ftwear has becme twisted. Plainly, thugh, this is a lng way frm shes that matter mre than runners. A club runner may set a persnal best in a pair f Nike Alphaflys, but she is nt ging t run faster than Ms. Assefa (wrld champin) wearing regular shes. Wrld Athletics insists such super-shes shuld be available t all athletes in rder t be legal, s there is n risk f results being determined by a lack f access t the best equipment.
Part f the appeal f sprts is that they shw humans n an upward trajectry(轨迹), becming strnger, faster and fitter. Technlgy has always cntributed t this. But as the sprts industry has mre investment, the mtivatins t find an edge in perfrmance have grwn, whether in kit, diet r game strategy. Surely, ad vances have t be cntrlled. But banning super-shes wuld be ppsing prgress and difficult t carry ut. This is a genie(精灵) that cannt be returned t its shebx.
32. What has imprved female marathn recrds since 2022?
A. The changes f rules. B. The assistance f caches.
C. The develpment f humans. D. The advance in sprts kit.
33. What is centered n abut super-shes in paragraph 2?
A. The challenge. B. The drawback. C. The principle. D. The histry.
34. Which f the fllwing might the authr agree with?
A. Ms. Assefa runs slwly in regular shes.
B. Nike Alphaflys better athletes' perfrmance.
C. Using super-shes is regarded as dishnest.
D. Access t super shes determines athletes' success.
35. What des the last paragraph imply?
A. Athletics shuld nt embrace super-shes.
B. We dn't need t wrry much abut technlgical advances.
C. Nt all investments have led t ad vances in technlgy.
D. It is impssible fr sprts industry t cntrl super-shes.

Dear sister Sarah,
I have just returned frm the lngest and hardest trip I have ever made in the muntains, having been gne ver five weeks. I am weary, but resting fast; sleepy, but sleeping deep and fast; hungry, but eating much. Fr tw weeks I explred the glaciers f the summits east f here, sleeping amng the snwy muntains withut blankets and with little t eat n accunt f its being s inaccessible. After my icy experiences it seems strange t be dwn here in s warm and flwery a climate.
I will sn be ff again, determined t use all the seasn in carrying thrugh my wrk —will g next t Kings River a hundred miles suth, then t Lake Tahe and surrunding muntains, and in winter wrk in Oakland with my pen.
Thugh slw, sme day I will have the results f my muntain studies in a frm in which yu all will be able t read and judge f them. The muntain s are calling and I must g, and I will wrk n while I can, studying incessantly(永不停息地).
I will write again when I return frm Kings River Canyn.
Farewell, with lve everlasting.
Yurs,
Jhn
