Jsefa Marin went t New Yrk frm Mexic in 1987, supprting her daughter back hme with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factry. With that small incme, she had t cllect recyclables, trading in cans fr five cents each.
When the clthing factry clsed dwn in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bttles t make ends meet.
Marin’s stry is nt unique. Millins arund the wrld make a living frm picking thrugh waste and reselling it—a vital rle that keeps waste manageable. In New Yrk City, the administrative department cllects nly abut 28 percent f the cans that culd be recycled. Rubbish cllectrs keep millins f additinal recyclables ut f landfills every year.
Yet cllectrs are ruled ut by gvernment plicies. The United States Supreme Curt in 1988stated that husehld garbage is public prperty nce it’s n the street. That enables plice t search rubbish fr evidence, but that prtectin hasn’t always been extended t recyclers. And in places like New Yrk City, which is testing city-wned lcked cntainers t hide garbage frm rats, cntainers are made clearly inaccessible fr cllectrs.
“There’s value in the waste, and we feel that value shuld belng t the peple, nt the city r the crpratins”, says Ryan Castalia, directr f a nnprfit recycling and cmmunity center in Brklyn.
Recgnized r nt, waste pickers have lng been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an ccasin when smene living next t a building where she was cllecting cans threw water at her. “It desn’t mean I am less f a persn than anyne else because I recycle”, she says.
Sme gvernments are starting t realize that prtecting the envirnment and humanity g hand in hand. The United Natin’s 2030 Agenda fr Sustainable Develpment, fr example, calls fr an end t pverty and all the risks it brings.

Abut ten years ag, lgging int Facebk, Twitter, r Instagram wuld mstly shw psts frm friends and family in the rder they were psted. Tday, these platfrms present a mix f cntent, tailred by algrithms (算法) t match users’ interests, whether they’re plants, sprts, cats, r plitics.
Kyle Chayka, a writer fr The New Yrker, discusses this tpic in his bk, Filter wrld. He explains that algrithms analyze user data t predict and influence what they will likely engage with. This means that instead f a simple, chrnlgical (按时间顺序的) feed, users encunter a dynamic stream, cnstantly adapting t their preferences. Chayka examines hw these algrithmic recmmendatins cntrl what we cnsume, frm music and mvies t fd and travel destinatins. He argues that this machine-driven selectin prcess has turned us int passive cnsumers, making ur preferences and tastes mre similar.
Chayka pints ut that algrithms make us passive by always shwing us cntent that we’re unlikely t click away frm but wn’t find t unexpected r challenging. This cnstant stream f recmmendatins reduces ur expsure t diverse r challenging cntent, subtly shaping ur preferences and behavirs.
Mrever, Chayka pints ut that algrithms als pressure cntent creatrs, like musicians and artists, t tailr their wrk t fit these digital platfrms. Fr instance, musicians n Sptify r TikTk might fcus n creating catchy hks at the beginning f their sngs t grab the listener’s attentin.
In summary, the change frm simple, time-rdered scial media psts t algrithm-driven cntent has a big impact n bth the viewers and the creatrs, influencing what we see, hear, and even think. Chayka’s insights highlight the need fr greater awareness and ptentially mre regulatin in ur increasingly digital wrld.
    28. Accrding t the text, hw have scial media platfrms changed in the past ten years?
    A. They shw psts in a time-based rder.B. They decide cnsumers’ different needs.
    C. They make adjustments t satisfy users’ needs.D. They present psts frm friends and family first.
    29. What des Kyle Chayka think f algrithmic recmmendatins?
    A. They make users mre active cnsumers.
    B. They affect users’ preferences and behavirs.
    C. They reduce the influence f cntent creatrs.
    D. They expse users t diverse and challenging cntent.
    30. Hw d algrithms influence cntent creatrs?
    A. By encuraging them t create mre wrks.
    B. By discuraging them frm using catchy hks.
    C. By giving them mre freedm t prduce their wrks.
    D. By frcing them t adapt their wrks t users’ interests.
    31. What’s the authr’s attitude t algrithmic recmmendatins?
    A. Objective.B. Negative.C. Psitive.D. Indifferent.

When yu ask peple t judge thers by their speech, a trend emerges: Listeners dislike disfluency. Slw talkers prducing lads f ums and pauses are generally cnsidered as less charming. But science tells us there may be even mre t disfluency.
Disfluencies d nt ccur in arbitrary psitins in sentences. Ums typically ccur right befre mre difficult r lw-frequency wrds. Imagine yu’re having dinner with a friend at a restaurant, and there’re three items n the table: a knife, a glass, and a wine decanter (醒酒器). Yur friend turns t yu and says, “Culd yu hand me the…um...” What wuld yu assume yur friend wants? Since it’s unlikely that they will hesitate befre such cmmn wrds as knife, and glass, chances are yu’ll pick up the decanter and ask, “Yu mean this?”
This is exactly what we demnstrated thrugh cntrlled eye-tracking studies in ur lab. Apparently, listeners hear the um and predict that an uncmmn wrd is mst likely t fllw. Such predictins, thugh, reflect mre than just simple assciatin between disfluencies and difficult wrds; listeners are actively cnsidering frm the speaker’s pint f view. Fr example, when hearing a nn-native speaker say the same sentence but with a thick freign accent, listeners dn’t shw a preference fr lking at lw-frequency bjects. This is prbably because listeners assume nn-native speakers may have as much truble cming up with the English wrd fr a cmmn bject, like a knife, as fr unusual nes and can’t guess their intentin.
In anther experiment, listeners were presented with an atypical speaker wh prduced disfluencies befre simple wrds and never befre difficult wrds. Initially, participants displayed the natural predictive strategy: lking at uncmmn bjects. Hwever, as mre time went by, and they gained experience with this atypical distributin f disfluencies, listeners started t demnstrate the cntrary predictive behavir: They tended t lk at simple bjects when hearing the speaker say um.
These findings represent further evidence that the human brain is a predictin machine: We cntinuusly try t predict what will happen next, even thugh nt all disfluencies are created equal.
    32. What des the underlined wrd “arbitrary” mean in Paragraph 2?
    A. Randm.B. Leading.C. Obvius.D. Cnsistent.
    33. What can be inferred frm nn-native speakers’ disfluencies?
    A. Nn-native speakers’ accent wn’t influence listeners’ predictins.
    B. Nn-native speakers are gd at cming up with unusual English wrds.
    C. Nn-native speakers’ intentin in cmmunicatin is easy t understand.
    D. Nn-native speakers’ disfluencies are a little less predictive.
    34. What des the experiment in Paragraph 4 shw?
    A. Simple things are difficult in sme cases.B. Listeners can adjust predictins accrdingly.
    C. Distributin f disfluencies is unchangeable.D. Disfluencies in cmmunicatin can be avided.
    35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Pauses Cexist with PredictinB. Active Listeners Simplify Talks
    C. Disfluency Says Mre Than Yu ThinkD. Brains Are Pwerful Predictin Machines
