In 1943, a jury (评审委员会) f tp schlars and scientists elected James Yen ne f “the ten greatest revlutinaries f ur time”, listing him alng with Albert Einstein and Orville Wright. Yet all he did was teaching Chinese farmers t read.
Brn in Sichuan in 1890, James Yen graduated frm the Yale University in 1918. After this, he went t France t supprt Chinese wrkers wh had been sent t help the Allies in Wrld War I. Wrking t help and teach them t read and write letters, Yen realized hw much they needed educatin. Therefre, he wrte a simple literacy (读写能力) bk which used nly 1000 basic characters. In the 1920s, inspired by his experiences, Yen rganized the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements. Its purpse was t bring literacy t the Chinese masses.
Fr 4000 years, reading and writing in China was nly dne by schlars. Everybdy knew, including the farmers themselves, that farmers were incapable f learning. That thrughly deep-seated pint f view was James Yen’s first “impssible” challenge t vercme. The secnd challenge was the Chinese language itself, cnsisting f many characters, each character having rich meanings. The third challenge was the pr technlgy and incnvenient transprtatin. Hw culd James Yen reach the 350 millin farmers back then? These were impssible dds, an impssibly huge gal.
Yet he made it and then expanded his gal: teach the rest f the Third Wrld t read. Practical reading prgrams started pumping ut literate peple like a gushing il well in the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Indnesia, Bangladesh and India. Peple became literate. Fr the first time in their entire histry, they culd access the accumulated knwledge f the human race.
What’s the secret f James Yen’s success? He tried t d smething that seemed impssible. He wrked lng hurs. And he started with what he had in frnt f him and gradually tk n mre and mre, little by little.
4. Why did James Yen establish the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements?
A. T prmte his bk abut Chinese characters.
B. T supprt Chinese wrkers in Wrld War I.
C. T teach Chinese peple t read and write.
D. T fllw the example f Einstein.
5. What prblem did James Yen meet in teaching the farmers?
A. Schlars’ prtest against it.B. The difficulty f the Chinese language.
C. Farmers’ inability t learn.D. The shrtage f teaching methds.
6. What can we learn abut James Yen frm Para. 4?
A. He spread the agricultural knwledge arund.
B. He led less develped cuntries t literacy.
C. He helped sme cuntries build il wells.
D. He changed the curse f histry.
7. What is the main reasn fr James Yen’s success?

I remember that a rapper n televisin nce said, “If it feels gd, d it.” Frm schls t wrkplaces, we are tld that rdinary negative (负面的) emtins and experiences—fear f failure r sadness ver a breakup, maybe—shuld be treated r remved. Feeling bad is bad.
This is wrng, as was the rapper’s mtt. I dn’t believe that eradicating bad feelings is the path t a gd life. We have an pprtunity here t judge the benefits f negative emtins and experiences instead f trying t push them away.
Negative emtins exist t keep us safe. The main negative emtins include sadness, anger, fear and disgust (厌恶). We experienced them in an uncnscius way in respnse t envirnmental stimuli (刺激). Yu never say t yurself, Hey, I think I’ll feel afraid nw—yu just feel it and react with fight r flight, which can save yur life. Disgust similarly warns us uncnsciusly f ptential illness.
Negative emtins can als make us mre effective in ur day-t-day activities. In an article in the jurnal Psychlgical Review, tw evlutinary psychlgists argue that sadness—and even depressin—have existed in the face f evlutin (进化) because they bring cgnitive benefits. Sadness can make us mre prductive at wrk by imprving fcus and helping us learn frm mistakes. This is hw failure, by means f the resulting negative emtins, can help lead t later success.
Finally, negative emtins make us strnger fr when there is a true emergency. Research shws that “stress vaccinatin training” — in which peple learn t cpe with anger, fear and anxiety by being brught up t stimuli that cause these feelings — is effective in creating emtinal tughness.
In sum, if we want a life full f deep meaning, true lve, and emtinal strength, it’s ging t invlve the risk f discmfrt, fight and lss. This means there will be sadness, fear, anger and disgust. If we remve negative emtins and experiences frm ur lives, we will be prer and weaker fr having dne s.

A. Stirring up.B. Fcusing n.C. Getting rid f.D. Keeping track f.

A Negative emtins help us wrk effectively.
B. Negative emtins give us strnger hearts.
C. Failure gives us a true sense f crisis.
D. Failure results frm mistakes.
11. Which is this passage mainly abut?
A. Why feeling bad is bad.B. Hw t achieve a meaningful life.
C. Hw t deal with negative emtins.D. Why negative emtins are necessary.

A small car arund the size f a Mini Cper, the Seagull is a fast-charging electric vehicle (车辆) (EV) prduced by BYD. It’s hardly a luxury car but it’s well-equipped, with a pwer driver’s seat and cruise cntrl. The best part? Its base mdel csts abut $10,700 in China. That’s abut a third f the cst f the cheapest EV yu can buy in the US. In 2018, Trump put, and Biden has since cntinued, a special 25 percent tax n Chinese-made cars, n tp f the rdinary 2.5 percent tax n freign-made cars, which perfectly shws that hwever mtivated the Biden gvernment might be by climate cncerns, it is much mre mtivated by a desire t help American carmakers.
The basic envirnmental argument fr electric cars is simple: Burning petrl in internal cmbustin enginest (内燃机) prduces CO2. Electric cars emit (排放) less per mile traveled bth because sme electricity is generated thrugh clean surces like wind, slar, and because electric mtrs are far mre efficient than petrl engines. EVs are slightly mre carbn-intensive (密集) t prduce in the first place, but mst estimates suggest the lwer per-mile emissins f EVs quickly make up fr the extra emissins invlved in their creatin.
But is this still true fr Chinese EVs? China still gets mre than 60 percent f its electricity frm cal, cmpared t less than 20 percent in the US. S, des this mean that BYD’s cheap EVs are bad fr the envirnment? Hardly. Clse t 90 percent f the emissins f a fssil fuel vehicle (化石燃料汽车) are frm the cmbustin f the fuel. Besides, EVs f whatever rigin are getting cleaner ver time as the electrical grid (电网) gets cleaner. That means EVs will d even mre fr the envirnment as the years g n.
The biggest factr fr China is that they cntrl all the upstream material supply chain fr lithium batteries (锂电池). Even if yur EV’s battery is made by a plant f Panasnic in the US, the raw materials fr that are prcessed in China first. “Part f why they’re s successful is they’ve been thinking utside the bx n cst reductin fr a lng time,” an expert says.
12. What can be inferred frm the first paragraph?
A Chinese EVs are a threat t American electric cars.
B. American gvernment has placed a ban n Chinese EVs.
C. The seagull prvides luxury experience at a reasnable price.
D. Climate cncerns are the nly driver f EV develpment in the US.
13. What des the authr think f EVs?
A. They are n better than typical gas vehicles.
B. Their pwer is generated in green ways.
C. They are ec-friendly in the lng run.
D. Their prductin causes n pllutin.
14. What is the advantage f Chinese EV industry?
A. Lwer carbn emissin.B. The advanced technlgy.
C. The lw budget marketing.D. The cntrl f raw materials fr batteries.
15. What is the best title f the passage?
A. EVs: pprtunity and challenge.B. Chinese EVs: pwering ahead.
C. Green cars: a lng way t g.D. Petrl vehicles: faded glry.
