In astrnmy, star classificatin is gverned by the Mrgan-Keenen system, which categrizes stars based n their cmpsitin and surface temperature. The rigins f this system can be traced back t the wrk f Annie Jump Cannn, a late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century astrnmer wh spent ver frty years classifying stars based n their unique spectra (光谱) f transmitted light.
Beginning early in her life, Cannn demnstrated an exceptinal talent fr the physical sciences. As a child, she develped an interest in astrnmy and transfrmed her study int a temprary bservatry. Later, as a student at Wellesley Cllege, Cannn earned a degree in physics and became an expert in spectrscpy, the prcess by which light is separated int its cmpnent wavelengths. During this perid, she als tk up phtgraphy and traveled extensively in rder t experiment with the newly invented black-bx camera.
Cannn’s backgrund in physics, astrnmy, and phtgraphy prvided her with a unique skillset that wuld serve her well fr the rest f her career. After wrking as a research assistant fr a number f astrnmers at Wellesley and Radcliffe Clleges, Cannn was hired by Prfessr Edward Charles Pickering, the directr f the Harvard Cllege Observatry. Under Pickering, she classified ver 300,000 stars — mre than any ther human in histry — using nly a telescpe, a spectrmeter, and a camera. Using this knwledge, she develped her wn classificatin system that relied n the surface temperature f the stars, which culd be accurately estimated using the spectra f light transmitted frm stars. It was said that Cannn culd classify three stars a minute and, using a magnifying glass, culd classify stars dwn t the 9th magnitude — sixteen times fainter than what can be seen by human eyes.

Research fund that when peple saw thers in their herd (群体) hesitating befre making a chice, they were abut twice as likely t break frm the grup and make a different chice.
The findings have meanings fr grup behaviur in finance, fashin — any situatin where there might be herd behaviur, Krajbich said. “Even if it appears at first that everyne is fllwing the same trend, hesitatin may shw that they are nt all n the same page,” he said.
The research studied 72 cllege students. They participated in grups f eight. When their predecessr(前任) respnded slwly, participants chse against the herd abut 66% f the time, cmpared t nly 33% f the time when their predecessr chse quickly. In cases where the grup was making the wrng decisin, this ften led peple t break frm the herd and make the crrect chice, he said.
“A cuple f bad decisins at the beginning can lead everyne t the wrng rad. That’s the herd behaviur,” Krajbich said. “But what we fund is that if peple can see the hesitatin in thers’ chices, that can help them break the chain and change the curse f the herd.”
Fast decisins by thers can cnslidate ne’s wn belief. Fr example, if a persn sees their friends quickly chse t get a vaccine fr COVID- 19, that may make them mre cmfrtable making the same chice, Krajbich said. If friends hesitate befre getting a vaccine — even if they eventually get ne — that may make a persn less sure abut whether t get the sht, he said.
Krajbich said the findings in the research aren’t necessary a universal rule. There may be sme decisins fr which taking lnger t chse culd indicate a mre thughtful chice. “It will be imprtant t figure ut when fast decisins signal cnfidence r when instead they signal thughtlessness,” he said.
