Our tw-year investigatin int caged (关在笼中) tigers in America sent us thrugh 32 US states—with sme truly shcking experiences. But as the deadline neared, I still needed a pwerful and hpeful image.
When we began ur reprting in 2017—Sharn, writing; me taking phts; and ur sn, NickRuggia, filming—mre tigers likely lived in cages in the US than remained in the wild. The number ranged frm 5,000 t 10,000, but withut strict gvernment versight, n ne knew fr sure.
Radside zs that allwed turists t take pictures f yung tigers were the main cause f what’s been called a US tiger crisis (危机). Caged cats ften ended up in the illegal wildlife trade. Yung tigers, parted frm their mthers at birth, were fed prly and tuched by hundreds f peple. When they grew t big and dangerus t pet at arund 12 weeks, yung tigers were put n shw, r simply disappeared.
While we dcumented the unpleasant part f this industry, we als wanted t shw the gd life these impressive animals culd have. With tw weeks left befre my deadline, I headed t the Wild Animal Sanctuary near Denver, where well-cared cats walked freely in their habitat.
There I met Clay, Daniel, and Enz, three f 39 tigers rescued frm an animal park in Oklahma. These nearly grwn cats raced beside ur car, which I’d seen nly in the wild. It was a ht July day and sn tw f the cats jumped int a pl t cl ff. The third rested beside them n the grund. I crssed the rad t take a picture f them. Then quietly, I came up clse, trying nt t disturb (打扰) them. I had the sht.

Peple tend t use trees fr papermaking. But maybe electrnics (电子) engineers are missing ut n smething here. “It turns ut that tw majr building blcks f wd have a lt f electrical qualities,” says Magnus Berggren, a prfessr at Linköping University.
His team has been wrking t make parts fr electrnics frm the frest. Right nw, they’re fcusing n tw materials f trees. The first material is cellulse, which can make energy. Lignin, the secnd material, can stre that energy, just as a battery des. The team has fund when pressed, cellulse can prduce electricity.
Sme device must then stre the electricity until it’s needed. Batteries can d this. But batteries aren’t very green. They have harmful materials. That’s where lignin cmes in.
Batteries cause electrns t flw frm ne place t anther, which can prduce electricity. In a typical battery, ne material must give electrns. The ther must accept them. Lignin can d bth. A weak acid (酸) encurages lignin t prduce electrns. “With a metal wire (金属线) t guide thse electrns, yu’ll have electricity,” says Berggren.
Berggren’s team use this quality t create its new lignin-based battery. Typical batteries use a metal wire as a path t guide the flw f electrns int r ut f the device. But since Berggren wants t make a battery f the frest, he lks fr a natural way. Once again, he turns t cellulse.
This natural material can serve as a wire-like path fr electrns. T make it wrk well, Berggren lines them with anther chemical knwn as PEDOT, which isn’t frm a tree. But when PEDOT is added t cellulse, they can cnduct electricity like a wire. “With a weak acid, nw yu have a battery,” Berggren says. “And tw f its three materials cme frm the frest.”
Berggren can imagine ne day having mbile phne batteries made largely frm frest prducts. Tree-based electrnics might als be useful in lighting.
32. What is cellulse used t d in the study?
A. Act as a weak acid.B. Cllect rainwater.
C. Prduce electricity.D. Make quality paper.
33. Which best describes the new battery?
A. Well-received.B. Ec-friendly.C. Harmful.D. Heavy.
34. What can we expect f tree-based electrnics?
A. They may change farming practices.B. They might save a lt f wd.
C. They wuld serve the elderly.D. They culd light the rms.
35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. A Green Way t Make and Stre EnergyB. An Attempt t Raise Pwer Prductin
