Accrding t a new study, many birds in the Amazn rainfrest have becme smaller as temperatures have increased. The difference hasn’t been bvius, but it has been significant enugh that sme scientists have suggested it’s a universal respnse t climate change.
But new research finds that the bdy size reductins aren’t happening acrss the bard with sme large-brained birds having much less significant changes.
Fr the study, researchers studied sme data n abut 70,000 birds that had died when they crashed int buildings in Chicag frm 1978 t 2016. They added data n the brain vlume and lifespan fr 49 f the 52 species f migratry birds (候鸟) in the riginal study.
They fund that birds with very large brains had reductins in verall bdy size that were abut ne-third f the reductins nted in birds with smaller brains. They thught that in birds, the species with big brains are the nes that build tls, manage t survive in tugh envirnments, live lnger, invest mre time and energy int raising babies, and end up surviving better in the wild.
Researchers aren’t certain exactly hw warmer temperatures might lead t decreasing bdy size in birds, but they are cnsidering tw pssible explanatins, which culd even be happening at the same time. First, natural selectin might be favring birds that can dissipate heat better. This is because smaller birds have higher surface area t vlume ratis (比例), s being small can help birds stay cl.
