In 1975, a San Dieg hmemaker named Marjrie Rice came acrss a clumn in Scientific American abut tiling (瓷砖). There is a prblem which has interested mathematicians since ancient Greek times. After Rice’s chance encunter with tiling, family members ften saw her in the kitchen cnstantly drawing shapes. “I thught she was just drawing casually,” her daughter Kathy said. But Rice wh tk nly ne year f math in high schl, was actually discvering never-befre-seen patterns.
Brn in Flrida, she lved learning and particularly her brief expsure t math, but tight budget and scial culture prevented her family frm even cnsidering that she might attend cllege. “Fr Rice, math was a pleasure,” her sn David nce said.
Rice gave ne f her sns a subscriptin t Scientific American partly because she culd read it carefully while the children were at schl. When she read Gardner’s clumn abut tiling as she later recalled in an interview: “I thught it must be wnderful that smene culd discver these beautiful patterns which n ne had seen befre.” She als wrte in an essay, “My interest was engaged by the subject and I wanted t understand every detail f it. Lacking a mathematical backgrund, I develped my wn symbl system and in a few mnths discvered a new type.”
Astnished and delighted, she sent her wrk t Gardner, wh sent it t Dris, a tiling expert at Mravian Cllege. Dris cnfirmed that Rice’s finding was crrect.
Later, Rice declined t lecture n her discveries, citing shyness, but at Dris’s invitatin, she attended a university mathematics meeting, where she was intrduced t the audience. Rice still said nthing f her achievements t her children, but they eventually fund ut as the awards munted.
    24. Why did Rice ften draw shapes in the kitchen?
    A. T becme a mathematician.B. T fill her leisure time.
    C. T explre the secret f tiling.D. T shw her passin fr drawing.
    25. What can we learn abut Rice frm Paragraphs 2 and 3?
    A. She lnged t start a clumn. B. She succeeded in develping a system.
    C. She was gd at designing patterns. D. She was rejected frm a cllege.
    26. What is the text mainly abut?

Like many peple ver the past few years, I have fund myself turning t audibks as my main means f reading literature. I find it far mre cmfrtable t “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My cnsumptin f new bks has dubled as a result--but a recent paper makes me wnder if this will cme at the price f my cmprehensin.
The study cmes frm Baz Keysar and Janet Geipel, bth at the University f Chicag, and it draws frm the “dual prcess mdel” f mental prcessing. Accrding t this view, we have tw ways f assessing infrmatin. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的), relying n natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely expsed t misinfrmatin. System 2 is analytical invlving the use f lgic reasning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think ur way thrugh the material step by step.
Fr decades, psychlgists have designed varius tests t determine which f these tw systems a persn is using. As ne example, cnsider the fllwing questin: Hw many animals f each kind did Mses take n the Ark (方舟)? If yu answered tw, yu were prbably nly cnsidering the cre f the questin, which is System 1 thinking. T get t the right answer-zer, yu need t think mre carefully abut the wrding, which wuld allw yu t remember it was Nah wh built the Ark, nt Mses. That is the kind f analytical prcess.
Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was t investigate whether the sensry frm-seeing vs. hearing-f the infrmatin wuld make a difference. They fund that it did: when answering these kinds f simple questins, participants were mre likely t make errrs when the sentences were spken ut lud, rather than written.
A greater reliance n ur feelings culd be a prblem if we are cnsuming infrmatin that needs lgical study. Fr this reasn. I will return t reading nn-fictin with my eyes rather than my ears. But I wn’t stp listening t nvels. I am quite happy t g with the flw f my emtins while my critical mind takes a break.
    28. What des the authr think f listening t audibks?
    A. It is ecnmical.B. It is relaxing.
    C. It is time-cnsuming.D. It is demanding.
    29. Which f the fllwing best describes System 2 mdel?
    A. Fully autmatic.B. Fairly reliable.
    C. Questin-centered.D. Emtin-invlved.
    30. Why is the Ark mentined in Paragraph 3?
    A. T illustrate a view.B. T present a fact.
    C. T intrduce a tpic.D. T draw a cnclusin.
    31. What des the authr intend t tell us?
    A. Listening t nvels is a must in reading. B. Reading nn-fictin bks benefits.
    C. Listening t bks cmes at a price.D. Ways f prcessing infrmatin differ.
    D
When 2023 turned ut t be the httest year in histry, it underlined the warnings f sme utstanding climate scientists that the pace f glbal warming was accelerating and had entered a dangerus new phase. A new study, published in Cmmunicatins Earth & Envirnment, suggests ne reasn fr such an acceleratin: Earth’s skies are getting clearer and letting in mre sunshine.
The study was carried ut by a set f NASA instruments in space that since 2001 have tracked the delicate balance f energy entering and leaving the planet. Over the past decade, the instruments, called the Cluds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES), have detected a marked rise in the amunt f slar energy the planet has absrbed—well beynd the warming expected frm rising greenhuse gases. The readings shw the planet has becme less reflective, as if it recently put n a darker shirt. One reasn is a drp in light-reflecting pllutin because f pwer-plant scrubbers(洗涤器) and cleaner fuels, the researchers say. They calculate that cleaner air culd accunt fr 40% f the increased energy warming the planet between 2001 and 2019.
Climate scientists have lng knwn that pllutin declines can lead t warming: Nt nly d the pllutin particles(微粒), r aersls, reflect light int space, but they can als increase the number f drplets in cluds, causing them t grw brighter r last lnger. Tw years ag, the decline f aersls became detectable n a glbal scale. But the climate mdels used in the new study attributed a startling(惊人的) amunt f warming t the pllutin drp.
Hwever, falling pllutin may nt be the nly reasn fr the brighter skies detected by CERES, a trend that kicked up after 2015. The mdels were unable t explain up t 40% f the extra absrbed light, and the CERES data shw reflectivity falling in bth hemispheres(半球), whereas pllutin has fallen the mst in the nrth. Bth f thse bservatins suggest ther factrs might be reducing Earth’s reflectivity. The mdels in the new study may be verstating the influence f aersls, says Bjrn Stevens, a climate scientist at the Max Planck Institute fr Meterlgy. “If the mdels are t sensitive t aersls, as sme f us think, it will cause us t lk in the wrng directin.”
The new study highlights the imprtant rle aersls will play as Earth cntinues t warm, and the need t keep mdels updated, says Tiffany Shaw, a climate dynamicist at the University f Chicag. The skies will nly get clearer, with pllutin cntrls in China taking frce, and India sn expected t fllw. Aersl declines will als reshape reginal weather, with cleaner air leading t a weaker Asian mnsn and increased heat extremes in nrthern hemisphere.
Accrding t the article, which f the fllwing cncerning CERES is true?
CERES has been keeping track f the delicate balance f energy since the early 20th century.
CERES has discvered a nticeable increase in the amunt f slar energy absrbed by the planet.
CERES has detected that the warming is exactly in line with the rising greenhuse gases.
CERES has prvided data t fully explain where the extra absrbed light cmes frm.
Which f the fllwing is nt the prperty f the pllutin particles?
They can thrw light t the earth back int space.
They can increase the number f cluds in the sky.
They can increase the brightness and duratin f cluds.
They can give rise t mre tiny drps f water in cluds.
What des Bjrn Stevens think f the new study?
The mdels in the new study are t sensitive.
The result f the new study is misleading.
The findings f the new study may be unreliable.
The new study attaches great imprtance t the rle aersls will play.
Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
CERES has figured ut the reasn fr glbal warming.
Aersl declines will reshape reginal weather.
Pllutin declines are making the earth’s skies clearer.
Clearer skies may be accelerating glbal warming.

This was suppsedly the seasn f giving and lving. Smething needed t change — but what?

    Dear Jack,
Learning that yu are quite interested in Chinese histry but cnfused abut which type f histry bks t start with, I’d like t ffer my recmmendatin t yu.
Cnsidering the differences between ppular histry bks and academic histry bks, it’s really a gd idea fr beginners, like yu, t start with ppular histry bks. (My reasns are as fllws.) Firstly, ppular histry bks presents histrical infrmatin in a way that is mre easily understd, seeking t infrm and educate a wider audience abut histry. Besides, packed with vivid descriptins and fun facts, this type f histry bks will definitely make yur reading an enjyable and fruitful experience.

As we gt clser t the frnt, he quietly asked, “Mmmy, are we really ging t give away my dllar?” I smiled and ndded, explaining that ur dnatins wuld help make smene’s Christmas warmer. Finally, we reached the frnt. My sn hesitantly handed his dllar t the vlunteer, his eyes wide with wnder. The vlunteer smiled and thanked him, placing the dllar in a large bx filled with ther dnatins.
    Para. 2:
With a wish f “Merry Christmas,” I turned t g back t the car. My sn’s face was bright with pride and happiness. As we drve away, I culdn’t help but feel a sense f fulfillment. The radi statin cntinued t play hliday music, but nw it seemed even mre cheerful and uplifting. I knew that we had dne smething special that day — nt just fr the hmeless shelter, but fr urselves as well. The simple act f kindness had brught us bth jy and a reminder f the true meaning f Christmas.

As well as learning the language, we can discver anther culture and keep an pen mind t a different way f thinking. Tday, I can speak different languages fluently: English, Spanish and French. Since I've learned them, I feel like it is even easier fr me t learn ther languages. Learning a freign language is a daily prcess. I have learnt basic Thai language since I wrked and lived here five years ag. It's easy fr me as I'm surrunded with yu native speakers, thugh I've been teaching yu peple English. I learned hw t be mre self-cnfident. I became mre imaginative in teaching my students English. I als figured ut hw t find a gd balance between being friendly and being respected at the same time. I learned hw t be mre playful with the kids, and hw t inspire my students t think. It is great t be part f their learning prcess as a teacher. I plan t spend the next few years learning abut Chinese civilizatin and enjying its charm. It's ttally different frm Western cultures like Spanish and British. Hpe yu all realize yur dreams ne day.
