Health fficials n Tuesday authrized the first electrnic cigarettes in the U.S., saying the R.J. Reynlds vaping (电子烟) prducts can benefit adult smkers.
The Fd and Drug Administratin said data submitted by the cmpany shwed its Vuse e-cigarettes helped smkers either quit r significantly reduce their use f cigarettes, the leading preventable cause f death in the U.S.
Tuesday’s first-f-a-kind decisin is part f a sweeping effrt by the FDA t bring scientific scrutiny (审查) t the multibillin-dllar vaping industry after years f delays.
In September, the agency said it had rejected applicatins fr mre than a millin e-cigarettes and related prducts, mainly due t their ptential appeal t yung children. But supervisrs delayed making decisins n mst f the majr vaping cmpanies. The FDA said it rejected 10 ther requests frm the cmpany fr ther flavred prducts. The agency is still inspecting the cmpany’s request t sell a menthl-flavred (薄荷味) nictine frmula (配方). “Tday’s authrizatins are an imprtant step tward ensuring all new tbacc prducts healthy and legal after the FDA’s premarket evaluatin,” said Mitch Zeller, directr f the FDA’s tbacc center, in a statement, “The manufacturer’s data demnstrates its tbacc-flavred prducts culd benefit addicted adult smkers wh switch t these prducts—either cmpletely r with a significant reductin in cigarette cnsumptin.”
E-cigarettes first appeared in the U.S. mre than a decade ag with the prmise f prviding smkers with a less harmful alternative t smking traditinal tbacc cigarettes. But there has been little tight study f whether the e-cigarettes truly help smkers quit. And effrts by the FDA t begin checking vaping prducts and their claims were repeatedly slwed by cmpeting plitical interests.
In recent years, the vaping market grew t include hundreds f cmpanies selling a gd supply f devices and nictine slutins in. varius flavrs and strengths. But the vast majrity f the market is cntrlled by a few cmpanies including Juul Labs, which is partially wned by Altria, and Vuse. T stay n the market, cmpanies must shw that their prducts benefit public health. In practice, that means prving that adult smkers wh use the prducts are likely t quit r reduce their smking, while teens are unlikely t get hked n them.
28. Why did U.S. health fficials authrize R.J. Reynlds’ e-cigarette prducts?
A. E-cigarette prducts are nt harmful t humans, especially adult smkers.
B. E-cigarette prducts culd help cntrl the death rates in the United States.
С. E-cigarette prducts are effective in reducing cigarette use in America.
D. E-cigarette prducts can ensure that adult smkers keep away frm smking.

A. Prcess f e-cigarette prduct assessment.
B. Significance f e-cigarette prducts’ data.
C. Advantages f using e-cigarettes amng smkers.
D. Reasns fr declining e-cigarettes applicatins.
30. Frm the authr’s perspective, which factr will keep the cmpany’s e-cigarette prducts in the market fr a lng time?
A. Interests f the cnsumers.B. Quality the prducts.
C. Evaluatin f the public.D. Marketing strategy.
31. What des the underlined phrase “get hked n” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Be addicted t.B. Be reliable n.
C. Be satisfied with.D. Be anxius abut.

Hw the ecnmics prfessin shuld fix its gender prblem
At the heart f ecnmics is a belief in the virtues (好处) f pen cmpetitin as a way f using the resurces yu have in the mst efficient way yu can. Thanks t the pwer f that insight, ecnmists rutinely tell pliticians hw t run public plicy and business peple hw t run their firms. Yet when it cmes t its wn huse, academic ecnmics culd have dne mre t bserve the standards it applies t the rest f the wrld.
In particular, it recruits (招聘) t few wmen. Als, many f thse wh d wrk in the prfessin say they are treated unfairly and that their talents are nt fully realised. As a result, ecnmics has fewer gd ideas than it shuld and suffers frm a skewed (歪曲的) viewpint. It is time fr the dismal science t imprve its dismal recrd n gender.
Fr decades relatively few wmen have participated in STEM subjects: science, l technlgy, engineering and maths. Ecnmics belngs in this list. And a survey by the American Ecnmics Assciatin (AEA) this week shws that many wmen wh d becme academic ecnmists are treated badly.
T deal with its gender shrtfall (缺口), ecnmics needs tw tls that it ften uses t analyse and slve prblems elsewhere: its ability t crunch data and its capacity t experiment. Take data first. The AEA study is cmmendable, but nly a fifth f its 45,000 present and past members replied t its pll. Better data are needed t capture hw wrk by female ecnmists is discriminated against. The mre cmprehensive (全面的) the picture that emerges, the sner and mre easily actin can be taken t change recruitment and t refrm prfessinal life.
The ther pririty is fr ecnmists t experiment with new ideas, as the AEA is recmmending. Fr a discipline that values dynamism, academic ecnmics is ften cnservative, sticking with teaching methds, hiring prcedures and scial cnventins that have been arund fr decades, The AEA survey reveals (显示) that 46% f wmen have nt asked a questin r presented an idea at cnferences fr fear f being treated unfairly, cmpared with 18% f men. Seminars culd be rganised t ensure that all speakers get a fair chance. The way that authrs’ names are presented n papers culd ensure that it is clear wh has dne the intellectual heavy lifting.
Instead f mving cautiusly, the ecnmics prfessin shuld d what it is best at: recgnise there is a prblem, measure it bjectively and find slutins. If the result is mre wmen in ecnmics wh are treated better, there will be mre cmpetitin fr ideas and a mre efficient use f a scarce (稀缺的) resurce. What ecnmist culd pssibly bject t that?
32. Why des ecnmics have fewer excellent ideas than it shuld?
A. Ecnmical envirnment isn’t gd enugh.
B. Prfessinals in this field are treated unjustly and their gifts are nt fully recgnized.
C. T many wmen are emplyed.
D. Wmen d wrse in ecnmics than men.
33. What des ecnmics need t handle its gender gap?
A. Data t capture hw wrk by female ecnmists is discriminated against.
B. Its ability t prcess data quickly and its capacity t experiment.
C. Actin t change recruitment and prfessinal life f female ecnmists.
D. Seminars rganised t ensure that all speakers get a fair chance.
34. What can we knw frm the last paragraph?
A. The result f the AEA survey is that there is better treatment t wmen
B. Mre wmen in ecnmics will bring mre cmpetitin f scarce resurce.
C. A balanced sex rati will d gd t the develpment f ecnmics.
D. Men in ecnmics can’t make this discipline better.
35. What can we infer abut the authr’s attitude twards the ecnmics and its recruitment nw?
A. Oppsed.B. Psitive.C. Objective.D. Indifferent.

It’s nt s lng ag that cntactless card payments were exciting and new, but the technlgy is already ld-hat. The new, better way t pay fr things in shps? By using yur phne t make a cntactless payment.
Because traditinally, when yu have paid with a card tap (轻敲) r using a chip and pin machine, ultimately the shp yu are buying frm will be nting dwn all f yur card details. 36 And this culd be a prblem—it means that if the shp is hacked (侵入) r plays fast and lse with its data, yu culd find yur card number expsed t the wrld.
Hwever, when yu tap t pay with yur device, it generates a unique ID number fr that deal and sends that instead. S yu can pay fr yur gds and the shp can get yur mney. 37 That is t say, phne payments are smarter.
38 If a pickpcket steals yur card they can immediately use up the mney. But if they get yur phne, when the phne ges t pay it will typically perfrm a bimetric check-it will ask fr a finger-print r use the camera t lk at yur face, t check that yu are wh yu say yu are.
39 Because f this added security, the limit (限额) is typically higher than fr cntactless cards. In the UK, it’s arund £100 fr mst retailers-thugh sme shps including mst supermarkets let yu spend much mre with just a tap f the phne.
Want t give it a try? T actually set things up, g t yur Wallet app and fllw the instructins. 40 Then it will autmatically recgnise the numbers and cnnect with yur bank. Usually yu receive a text message with a special cde n it. And then, well, yu’re dne. When yu pay, hld yur phne ver the payment machine, and pay fr yur gds!
A. It helps t build the client list.
B. The setup prcess varies with banks.
C. N ne needs t share any sensitive data.
D. It’s als mre effective against the threat f thefts.
E. And phne payments are increasingly cnvenient t.
F. Typically this starts by scanning yur card with yur phne.
G. Therefre, it knws which bank accunt t take the mney frm.

A few days later, ne f my students, Laura, had an unexpected and uncharacteristic utburst f destructive behavirs in class. She refused t wrk with her grup.
