The city f Venice, Italy, has finally made a lng-awaited decisin. Starting n August 1, 2021, cruise ships will n lnger be allwed t enter the city’s waters.
Cntrary t ppular pinin, these cruise ship visitrs cntribute relatively little t the lcal turism ecnmy. The New Yrk Times reprted cruise ship passengers amunt t 73% f visitrs, but cntribute a mere 18% f turism dllars. “The percentage is inverted fr peple wh spend at least ne night at a htel; they represent 14% f visitrs, but 48% f the business.”
Many peple are verjyed by the news, especially envirnmental activists. Firstly, the cruise ships wuld disturb the waterways and erde the fundatins f already weak buildings. A 2019 study published in Nature fund the waves created by large ships culd “redistribute industrial pllutants already present in the waters.” Others have said these same waves carve huge hles in the underwater bttms f buildings, making them unstable. Furthermre, when canals are deepened in rder t allw larger bats, it destrys castal habitats and makes flds wrse. This is part f the reasn why, in recent years, Venice has experienced terrible flding that cmpletely flded St. Mark’s Square and ther landmarks.
The annuncement came as a surprise as the lcals did nt expect the reginal gvernment t act s swiftly. In April a prjected ban was issued, but it depended n finding an alternative prt fr the ships---a requirement that culd take years t achieve. The annuncement made last week, hwever, did away with that cnditin, allwing the city t mve frward quickly with the ban.
Hpefully, mre travelers are als realizing industrial-style turism is a terrible way t travel fr many reasns. It’s nt unlike industrial agriculture and fast fashin in that its gal is t frce as many sights, landmarks, and cuntries int as tight a schedule as pssible, fr as little mney as pssible. Its cncentratin n cnvenience erdes human cnnectins, preservatin f meaningful spts that make travel s valuable in the first place.

Like many peple, in terms f scializing, I priritize(优先考虑)making time fr my clsest friends and family. When it cmes t reaching ut t peple, I dn’t knw as well I ften find myself unwilling t engage. This culd be a big mistake, thugh, accrding t a new study. Having different types f scial interactins seems t be central t ur happiness —smething many f us may think little f.
In a series f surveys, researchers lked at hw having a scially diverse netwrk related t peple’s well-being. In ne survey, 578 Americans reprted n what activities they had been engaged in, with whm and fr hw lng ver the past 24 hurs, while als saying hw happy with life they were. The researchers fund that peple with mre diverse scial netwrks were happier and mre satisfied with life than thse with less diverse netwrks — regardless f hw much time they had spent scializing verall.
“The mre yu can braden yur scial circle and reach ut t peple yu talk t less frequently —like an acquaintance, a friend, a cwrker, r even a stranger —the mre it culd have psitive benefits fr yur well-being,” said the lead researcher Hanne Cllins f Harvard Business Schl.
T further test this idea, she and her clleagues lked at large data sets frm the American Time Use Survey and the Wrld Health Organizatin’s Study n Glbal Aging and Adult Health. In bth cases, they fund that when peple had a brader range f scial interactins, they experienced greater happiness and well-being.
Then Cllins and her clleagues did anther analysis, using data frm a mbile app that 21,644 French-speaking peple used t reprt n their daily scial activities and happiness. There, they fund that when smene experienced greater-than-average scial diversity ne week, they were happier that week and the week after.
Why is that? It culd be that being with different peple cntributes t different kinds f emtins, which may be a driving frce in ur happiness, says Cllins. Alternatively, it culd be that having a mre diverse netwrk allws yu t get varius scial supprts when yu need it. Whatever the case, Cllins hpes her research will inspire peple t expand their scial netwrks when they can.
32. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. Reaching ut t strangers is a must in peple’s life.
B. It culd be a mistake fr peple t scialize with strangers.
C. Diverse scial interactins cntribute little t peple’s happiness.
D. Many peple are mre willing t interact with the clsest friends.

B. Its results were against the nes f previus surveys.
C. The researchers cllected large amunts f data frm different apps.
D. It fcused n the impact f a mre diverse scial netwrk n life happiness.
34. Which f the fllwing is mentined by Cllins?
A. Any stranger r c-wrker can bring yu happiness.
B. Brad scial circle cntributes t mre happiness.
C. Happiness depends n hw much time yu spend with strangers.
D. Brad scial netwrk leads t a balanced life.
35. What will be mst prbably talked abut after the last paragraph?
A. Cllins’s scial life. B. Cllins’s cnclusins.
C. Cllins’s new research. D. Cllins’s specific suggestins.
