由第一部分最后“……The publishing huse believes that mdern readers will welcme the shrter versins.”
由第二部分中“I must say, the idea develped frm a game f “shame” in my ffice. Each f us was required t cnfess (承认) t the mst embarrassing blanks in his r her reading. …………… a leading publishing huse, we are trying t make classics cnvenient fr readers.”

由“I must say, the idea develped frm a game f “shame” in my ffice. Each f us was required t cnfess (承认) t the mst embarrassing blanks in his r her reading. I admitted that I had never read Anna Karenina and tried but failed t get thrugh Gne with the Wind several times. One f my clleagues acknwledged skipping (跳读) Jane Eyre. We realized that life is t shrt t read all the bks yu want t and we never were ging t read these nes.
As a leading publishing huse, we are trying t make classics cnvenient fr readers.”

My 21-year-ld niece, a secnd-year undergraduate, mentined that she watches vide lectures ffline at twice the nrmal speed. Struck by this, I asked sme ther students I knw. Many nw rutinely speed up their lectures when learning ffline — ften by 1.5 times, smetimes by even mre. Speed learning is nt fr everyne, but there are websites where students discuss hw dd it will be nce they return t the lecture theatre. One cntributr wrte: “Nrmal speed nw sunds like drunk speed.”
Educatin was adapting t the digital wrld lng befre Cvid-19 but, as with s many ther human activities, the pandemic has given learning a huge push twards the virtual. Overnight, schls and universities clsed and teachers and students had t find ways t d what they d nly via the internet. “This is a time fr schls and systems t reimagine educatin withut schling r classrms,” says Prfessr Yng Zha. The secnd is that students shuld have mre cntrl ver their learning, with the teacher’s rle shifting frm instructr t supervisr f learning resurces, advisr and mtivatr. This is where s-called “active learning” cmes in with a grwing bdy f research suggesting that cmprehensin and memry are better when students learn in a hands-n way — thrugh discussin and interactive technlgies, fr example. It’s als where the cncept f “prductive failure” applies. Prfessr Manu Kapurin argues that students learn better frm their wn r thers’ failed attempts t slve a prblem befre r even instead f being tld hw t slve it.
If the prgress f the times is unable t hld back the cming revlutin in educatin, it seems unlikely that the traditinal classrm is ging t have any luck in its attempts trying t turn back the clck. As Laurillard puts it, “It tk a glbal pandemic t drive hme what we’ve been saying fr 20 years.”
    8. By giving examples f “speed learning” in the first paragraph, the authr wants t shw that _________.
    A. digital wrld is dramatically refrming the way f learning.
    B. speed learning cmpletely replaces nrmal speed learning.
    C. returning t the lecture theatre is strange after speed learning.
    D. educatin begins t adapt t digital wrld after Cvid-19.
    9. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing statements is TRUE?
    A. It is essential fr smart machines t be mre human.
    B. Students shuld pssess mre infrmatin abut creativity.

Sme f the greatest mments in human histry were fueled by emtinal intelligence. When Martin Luther King Jr. presented his dream, he chse language that wuld stir the hearts f his audience. Delivering this electrifying (展性的) message required emtinal intelligence — the ability t recgnize, understand, and manage emtins.
Emtinal intelligence has been highly recmmended by leaders, plicymakers, and educatrs as the slutin t a wide range f scial prblems. If we can teach ur children t manage emtins, the argument ges, we’ll have less bullying and mre cperatin. If we can cultivate emtinal intelligence amng leaders and dctrs, we’ll have mre caring wrkplaces and mre cmpassinate healthcare.
Emtinal intelligence is imprtant, but the uncntrlled enthusiasm has bscured (掩盖) a dark side. New evidence shws that when peple sharpen their emtinal skills, they becme better at manipulating (把持) thers. When yu`re gd at cntrlling yur wn emtins, yu can hide yur true feelings. When yu knw what thers are feeling, yu can mtivate them t act against their wn best interests.
Scial scientists have begun t dcument this dark side f emtinal intelligence. In a research led by University f prfessr Jchen Menges, when a leader gave an inspiring speech filled with emtin, the audience was Jess likely t scrutinize (细察) the message and remembered f the cntent. Irnically (讽刺是) audience members were s mved by the speech that they claimed t recall mre f it.
The authrs call this the awestruck effect, but it might just as easily be described as the dumbstruck effect. One bserver reflected that Hitler’s persuasive impact came frm his ability t strategically express emtins — he wuld “ear pen his heart — and these emtins affected his fllwers t the pint that they wuld stp thinking critically and just emte.”
Leaders wh master emtins can rb us f ur capacities t reasn. If their values are ut f step with ur wn, the results can be destructive. New evidence suggests that when peple have self-serving mtives (动机), emtinal intelligence becmes a weapn fr manipulating thers. In a study led by the University f Trnt psychlgist Stephane Cte, university emplyees filled ut a survey abut their Machiavellian (不择手段的) tendencies, and tk a test measuring their knwledge abut effective strategies fr managing emtins. Then, Cte’s team assessed hw ften the emplyees deliberately undermined (逐渐削弱) their clleagues. The emplyees invlved in the mst harmful behavirs were Machiavellians with high emtinal intelligence. They used their emtinal skills t lwer the dignity f their peers fr persnal gain.
Shining a light n this dark side f emtinal intelligence is ne missin f a research team led by University Cllege Lndn prfessr Martin Kilduff. Accrding t these experts, emtinal intelligence helps peple disguise (伪装) ne set f emtins while expressing anther fr persnal Prfessr Kiiduit’s team writes, “The strategic disguise f ne’s wn emtins and the manipulatin f thers’ emtins fr strategic ends are behavirs evident nt nly n Shakespeare’s stage but als in the ffices and crridrs where pwer and influence are traded.”
Of curse, peple aren’t always using emtinal intelligence fr nefarius ends. Mre ften than nt, emtinal skills are simply instrumental tls fr gal accmplishment. A research team discvered that funder Anita Rddick used emtinal intelligence t inspire her emplyees fundraise fr charity. As Rddick explained, “Whenever we wanted t persuade ur staff t supprt a particular prject, we always tried t break their hearts.”
There is grwing recgnitin that emtinal intelligence-like any skill-can be used fr gd r evil. S if we’re ging t teach emtinal intelligence in schls and develp it at wrk we need t cnsider the values that g alng with it and here it’s actually useful.
    12. Why des the authr mentin Martin Luther King, Jr?

    B. T recmmend his speech t ther leaders.
    C. T impress the readers with a majr tpic.
    D. T advcate a sciety with fewer prblems.
    13. Which f the fllwing belngs t a dark side f emtinal intelligence?
    A. Develping the capability t cntrl ne’s wn emtin.
    B. Inducing peple t d what brings disadvantages t them.
    C. Appealing t the audience t cncentrate and remember mre.
    D. Encuraging the mved audience t a mre f the speech.
    14. What is the dumbstruck effect f Hitler’s emtinal intelligence?
    A. His fllwers wuld tear pen their hearts t him.
    B. His fllwers wuld express emtins strategically.
    C. His fllwers wuld lse the ability t reasn prperly.
    D. His fllwers wuld develp the self-serving mtives.

故填have sprung。

Orin Bks, which decides there is a market in creating cut-dwn classics (经典著作), is slimming dwn sme nvels by such great writers as L. Tlsty, M. Mitchell and C. Brnte. Nw, each f them has been whittled dwn t abut 400 pages by cutting 30 t 40 pages percent f riginal, with wrds, sentences, paragraphs and, in a few cases, chapters remved. The first six shrtened editins, all priced at £6.99 and advertised as great reads “in half the time”, will g n sale next mnth, with plans fr 50 t 100 mre t fllw. The publishing huse believes that mdern readers will welcme the shrter versins.

Well, I’m publisher f Orin Grup. Thanks fr yur attentin, Mr. Handsme.
I must say, the idea develped frm a game f “shame” in my ffice.
As a leading publishing huse, we are trying t make classics cnvenient fr readers but it’s nt as if we’re withdrawing the riginal versins. They are still there if yu want t read them.

I’m directr f the nline bk club.
Mr. Edwards, I think yur shrtened editin is a breath f fresh air. I’m guilty f never having read Anna Karenina, because it’s just s lng. I’d much rather read tw 300-page bks than ne 600-page bk. I am lking frward t mre shrtened classics!

I’m frm the Lndn independent bkshp Crckatt & Pwell.
In my pinin, the practice is cmpletely ridiculus. Hw can yu edit the classics? I’m afraid reading sme f these bks is hard wrk, and that is why yu have t develp as a reader. If peple dn’t have time t read Anna Karenina, then fine. But dn’t read a shrtened versin and kid yurself it’s the real thing.
