Macquarie Island is a tiny island that’s part f Australia. It’s abut halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. The island’s been made a wrld heritage area because it’s s untuched, but this unique envirnment is under threat frm sme unwanted visitrs.
It all started when seal hunters came t the island in the early 1800s. They brught rabbits with them as a surce f fd fr the jurney, and als n bard the ships were rats and mice, which made their way nt the island t. They’re being blamed fr destrying the hmes f marine birds, causing sil lss and ripping up plant cver, as these befre-and-after phts shw.
S what’s being dne abut the prblem? It starts with a team f helicpters that fly acrss the island carrying these giant cntainers. Inside them are pisned pellets (有毒饲料) which are drpped and spread acrss the island. Fr any rabbits that survived the baiting (诱饵) , there’s a plan B. This special team f dgs is being put thrugh a final training. It’ll be their jb t track dwn any remaining rabbits. They have t als learn t behave arund the island’s native wildlife. The dgs culd be here fr years r until the task is cmplete. The dgs dn’t actually kill the rabbits. They find them, then the hunters decide t either catch the rabbits r sht them.

Why is this finding imprtant? “It prvides additinal evidence that live human-animal interactins may increase cgnitive (认知的) and emtinal activity in the brain. If patients with prblems in mtivatin, attentin, and sciemtinal functining shw higher emtinal invlvement in activities cnnected t a rabbit, then such activities culd increase the chance f learning and f achieving healing aims,” said the leading authr f the study, Rahel Marti, a dctral student in the divisin f clinical psychlgy and animal-assisted treatment at the University f Basel in Switzerland.
Researchers used functinal near-infrared spectrscpy (fNIRS) in the study, which is a prtable brain scanner that prvides flexibility since it’s functinal in natural settings and nt limited t a clsed rm in a lab.
The study team fitted each f the 19 participants with the scanner and asked them t bserve and interact with ne f the three live rabbits. First, participants watched the rabbit frm acrss the rm. Then the rabbit sat next t them. Finally, each persn was allwed t pet the rabbit. This prcess ccurred twice mre at later dates.
In ther sessins, each persn repeated the same sequence with a stuffed rabbit that cntained a ht water bttle t make it have the exactly same bdy temperature f a live rabbit. In each f the sessins, brain activity rse as the live rabbit r the stuffed ne mved clser.
