Mst peple assume that the human brain is set n “autmatic”—that means it learns all by itself. But this isn’t always true. We need t train urselves t be better learners—t actively take part in the learning prcess and t reflect n what we have learnt. These kinds f learning behaviurs are called “active learning”. I suggest ding fur things t take an active rle in yur learning.
Listen t the uter vice
There are tw kinds f vices: the inner vice and the uter vice. Yur inner vice expresses yur persnal pinins, while the uter vice tells yu abut pinins frm what yu hear r read. Althugh yur inner vice can be useful, it can als get in the way f learning. If yu keep paying t much attentin t it, yu risk missing imprtant infrmatin. Instead, active learners are pen-minded and fcus n what the speaker/ write is saying, nt n what their brain is saying in the backgrund. In this way, they are in a better psitin t make decisins.
Ask questins
Asking questins is the easiest way t prmte active learning. When yu get infrmatin frm smene, frm bks r the Internet, ask tw, three, even five questin abut the tpic. The answers will lead yu t further learning, and the very act f wrking ut questins will help yu t achieve a higher level f understanding abut the tpic. In shrt: D nt stp being curius.
Get t the truth
Active learners d nt accept everything they learn. They attempt t find the truth at the heart f each idea. Even when an idea sunds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect f it that is based n truth. S if smene says that dinsaurs still exist tday, think abut why they believe this. Where des the idea cme frm? D they have enugh data t supprt their views? If yu try t find ut the surce f an idea, n matter hw crazy it seems, yu will increase yur chance f learning smething.
Fcus n the message
Many peple miss ut n learning pprtunities because they let their feelings get in the way. They refuse t learn r ignre what is said because f wh the speaker/ writer is. It is true that we cannt help disliking sme peple —this is human nature, after all. But d nt frget yu can still learn frm them. Active learners d nt judge peple based n firs impressins r persnal feelings. Instead, they separate the message frm the message. This ges the ther way as well---d nt just assume that sme peple are always right because f wh they are r just because they are yur friends.
36. Which f the fllwing is TRUE abut inner vice and uter vice?________
A. Yur inner vice is useless, and always gets in the way f learning.
B. Yur inner vice is what yu think.
C. The uter vice usually is what yur brain is saying.
D. The uter vice expresses yur persnal pinins.
37. Accrding t Paragraph 3 what d yu knw abut asking questins?
A. Asking questins will lead yu t further learning.

B. is-willing t accept everything they learn

A. T ffer sme tips n hw t learn actively
B. T advise us t listen t the uter vice.

Last weekend I made my first visit t a remte village, hme t ne f ur students, Tmbe. Anther teacher and I walked fr tw and a half hurs t get there—first, up a muntain frm where we had fantastic views, and then dwn a shaded path t the valley belw. When we arrived at the village, Tmbe’s mther, Kiak, saw us cming and started crying “ieee ieee”. We shk hands with all the villagers. Everyne seemed t be related t Tmbe.
Tmbe’s father, Mukap, a man with a strng jaw and a wrinkled frehead, led us t his huse, a lw, rund bamb hut with n windws, with a dr just big enugh t get thrugh, and with grass sticking ut f the rf—this shws it is a man’s huse. Such husing is dark inside s it tk time fr ur eyes t adjust. Fresh grass had been laid n the flr and there was a platfrm fr Jenny and me t sleep n. There was a fireplace in the centre f the hut. The nly pssessins I culd see were ne brm, a few saucers, a kettle, cups, pans, and a cuple f jars.
Mukap built a fire utside and laid stnes n it t heat. He then placed the ht stnes in an empty il drum with kau kau(sweet ptat), ripe crn, and greens. He then cvered the vegetables with banana leaves and left them t steam. It smelled delicius. We ate inside the hut sitting rund the fire. I lved listening t the family talking sftly t each ther in their language, even thugh I culd nt participate much in the cnversatin. Luckily, Tmbe interpreted fr us.
Later. I nticed a can standing upside dwn n the grill(烤架)ver the fire. After a while. Tmbe threw it ut f the drway. Tmbe tld me that the can was heated t dry ut the leftver fd. His family believes that leftvers attract bad spirits in the night, s any leftver fd is dried up in a can and the can is then thrwn ut f the hut.
We left the village the next mrning after many gdbyes and firm handshakes. My muscles were aching and my knees shaking as we dragged urselves dwn the muntain twards hme. That evening I fell happily int bed. It was such a privilege t have spent a day with Tmbe’s family.
41. Why did Tmbe’s mther start crying “ieee ieee”?
A. Because she was excited t see her sn hme
B. Because she saw smene wh scared he
C. Because she was welcming the teachers.
D. Because that was her daily rutine.
42. What can we learn abut Tmbe’s father frm the passage?

We use bth wrds and bdy language t express ur thughts and pinins in ur interactins with ther peple. We can learn a lt abut what peple are thinking by watching their bdy language. Wrds are imprtant, but the way peple stand, hld their arms, and mve their hands can als give us infrmatin abut their feelings.
Just like spken language, bdy language varies frm culture t culture. The crucial thing is using bdy language in a way that is apprpriate t the culture yu are in. Fr example, making eye cntact—lking int smene’s eyes—in sme cuntries is a way t display interest. In ther cuntries, by cntrast, eye cntact is nt always apprved f. Fr example, in many Middle Eastern cuntries, men and wmen are nt scially permitted t make eye cntact. In Japan, it may demnstrate respect t lk dwn when talking t an lder persn.
The gesture fr “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, smene wh witnesses anther persn emplying the gesture might think it means mney. In France, a persn encuntering an identical gesture may interpret it as meaning zer. Hwever, yu shuld avid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is nt cnsidered plite.
Even the gestures we use fr “yes” and “n” differ arund the wrld. In many cuntries, shaking ne’s head means “n”, and ndding means “yes”. By cmparisn, in Bulgaria and suthern Albania, the gestures have the ppsite meaning. There are als differences in hw we tuch each ther, hw clse we stand t smene we are talking t, and hw we act when we meet r part. In cuntries like France and Russia, peple may kiss their friends n the cheek when they meet. Elsewhere, peple favur shaking hands, bwing frm the waist, r ndding the head when they meet smene else.
Sme gestures seem t have the same meaning everywhere. Placing yur hands tgether and resting them n the side f yur head while clsing yur eyes means “sleep”. A gd way f saying “I am full” is mving yur hand in circles ver yur stmach after a meal.
Sme bdy language has many different uses. Perhaps the best example is smiling. A smile can help us get thrugh difficult situatins and find friends in a wrld f strangers. A smile can break dwn barriers. We can use a smile t aplgise, t greet smene, t ask fr help, r t start a cnversatin. Experts suggest smiling at yurself in the mirrr t make yurself feel happier and strnger. And if we are feeling dwn r lnely, there is nthing better than seeing the smiling face f a gd friend.
46. What culd be inferred frm Paragraph 1?
A. Bdy language is as imprtant as spken language.
B. Bdy language alne cannt express what we are thinking
C. Bdy language is nt mre imprtant than spken language
D. We can’t cmmunicate with thers withut spken language.
47. The mst imprtant thing abut using bdy language is that ________.
A. yu needn’t use it everywhere
B. yu ught t make eye cntact
C. yu shuld respect the lcal culture
D. it shuld be cnsistent with yur wn culture
48. With the example “OK” in Paragraph 3, the authr intends t shw that ________.
A. the Japanese value mney mre
B. peple frm different cuntries can’t cmmunicate
C. in Brazil and Germany, peple never use the gesture “OK”
D. the same gesture may mean different things in different places
49. What culd be inferred frm Paragraph 4abut the gesture “yes” and “n”?
A. In Bulgaria, ndding means “yes”.
B. In suthern Albania, shaking yur head means “yes”.
C. The “yes” and “n” gestures seem t have the same meaning everywhere
D. The “yes” and “n” gestures in Bulgaria and suthern Albania are cmpletely ppsite.
50. The underlined part “A smile can break dwn barriers.” in the last paragraph prbably means ________.
A. a smile is the key t success
B. smiling can make yu feel happier and strnger
C. smiling can help yu break dwn the barriers in yur way
D. a smile is a pwerful tl fr building and strengthening scial cnnectins
D
This mrning, I saw the shcking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mde”. In the article, varius peple said that the public shuld ppse the idea f develping driverless cars. They said that sme advances in technlgy were unnecessary and culd even be dangerus. Hence, we shuld cease accepting technlgy just because it is new. The newspaper reprted that the car cmpany had already aplgised fr the accident, but the families f the deceased(死者)said it was nt enugh. Nevertheless, the cmpany still claimed that mst peple wuld be travelling in driverless cars ne day sn.
On the ne hand, there are many different grups f peple arund the wrld wh live happily in the absence f new technlgy. Prbably the mst well knwn are the Amish(亚米希人),a grup f Christians living in rural America. They d nt wn r drive cars, watch TV, r use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will prbably be living the same way in the distant future. They advcate a simple life with an emphasis n hard wrk, family, and cmmunity. They think that is better than caring abut luxuries r fllwing the lives f the rich and famus. It culd even be argued that the Amish’s quality f life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural envirnment rather than living in large, plluted cities.
On the ther hand, new technlgy has prvided peple everywhere with many benefits ver the years. Fr example, the latest weather-tracking cmputer prgrammes give peple lts f warnings abut ptential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Mrever, the Internet has made it pssible fr friends and family t keep in tuch easily even if they are n ppsite sides f the wrld. It has als made finding pprtunities in life much easier, as it allws peple t make larger netwrks f friends thrugh using scial media.
Persnally, I have benefited quite a lt frm technlgical advances. I fund my career as an AI designer thrugh a scial media netwrk. My health mnitr, which I wear all the time, has als helped me get int the best shape f my life. Of curse, when new technlgy changes the way we live, it can be a scary prspect.
Nevertheless, I will always lk n the psitive side f change and accept it rather than resist it.
51. In writing Paragraph 1, the authr aims t ________.
A. prpse a definitinB. make a cmparisn
C. reach a cnclusinD. intrduce a tpic
52. What des the authr intend t shw with the example f the Amish?

D. Fllwing the lifestyle f celebrities will lead t a decline in the quality f life.

A. New technlgy has brught a lt f cnvenience t mankind.
B. New technlgy can prevent ptential natural disasters frm happening.
C. New technlgy can help us expand ur circle f friends.
D. New technlgy can help us find ur friends n the ther side f the wrld.
54. What is the authr’s attitude twards new technlgy?

C. Skeptical.D. Grateful.
55. What makes the best title fr the passage?
A. Shuld Driverless Car Have a Future.
B. The Amish and New Technlgy
C. Driverless Car with New Technlgy
