Cmputers are pretty gd at answering questins. Just ask Alexa, Amazn’s vice assistant, wh can tell yu the weather r directins. Cmputers are gd at spitting back facts, but haven’t shwn the same critical r creative thinking that humans have. That culd be changing, at least when it cmes t reading, because f advances in AI (artificial intelligence).
Research teams at Micrsft and Chinese tech cmpany Alibaba reached what they described as a milestne (里程碑) earlier this January. Their AI systems utperfrmed the estimated human scre n a reading cmprehensin test.
The test was develped at Stanfrd University. It shwed that, in at least sme situatins, cmputers can beat humans at quickly “reading” hundreds f Wikipedia articles. AI machines culd cme up with accurate answers t questins abut warrir-king Genghis Khan, r the Apll space prgram.
The cmputers, hwever, als made mistakes that many peple wuldn’t have. Micrsft, fr instance, failed an easy ftball questin. The cmputer was asked which member f the Carlina Panthers ftball team intercepted (拦截) the mst passes in the 2015 seasn. The crrect answer was Kurt Cleman, nt Jsh Nrman. Any persn wh carefully read the Wikipedia passage wuld have discvered the right answer. Hwever, the cmputer made a mistake in the wrd “mst” and didn’t understand that seven is bigger than fur.
“We’re still a lng way frm cmputers being able t read and cmprehend general text in the same way that humans can,” Kevin Sctt, Micrsft’s head f technlgy, wrte. He praised the AI system fr passing the test, calling it a majr achievement by the cmpany’s researchers.
“It strikes me fr the kind f prblem that they’re slving that it’s nt pssible t d better than peple, because peple are defining what’s crrect,” Littman said. “The impressive thing here is that they met human perfrmance, nt that they’ve exceeded (超越) it.”
