Researchers frm the University f Gthenburg have cllected leaves and needles frm eleven different trees grwing in the same place in the Gthenburg Btanical Garden (GBG) t analyse which substances they have absrbed.
“This tree cllectin prvides a unique pprtunity t test many different species f trees with similar envirnmental cnditins and expsure t air pllutants," said Jenny Klingberg, a researcher f the GBG.
A ttal f 32 different pllutants were analysed, sme f which are bund t particles f varius sizes. Others are gaseus. This prject has fcused n PAHs(多环芳烃).In cities. traffic is the biggest surce f these pllutants, which are released due t incmplete burning in engines.
"Our analyses shw that different species f trees have different abilities t absrb air pllutants. Cnifers generally absrb mre gaseus PAHs than brad-leaved trees. Anther advantage f cnifers is that they als act as air purifiers in winter, when air pllutin is usually at its highest," said Jenny Klingberg.

There are tw technical innvatins nted by Jnathan Gratch, a cmputer scientist at the University f Suthern Califrnia wh studies negtiatin agents.
