Fr 18 years, I’ve feared the yearly event f writing a “visin statement (愿景宣言)” fr ur sn, Ethan. He has autism (自闭症). In thery, the visin statement is a lvely idea — an pprtunity fr parents t express the future they plan fr their child five years dwn the rad. In reality, as Ethan grew up and his limitatins became clearer, I fund it harder every year t write the shrt paragraph.
This year, as Ethan cmpleted his final year in the schl system, we signed Ethan up t wrk at a lcal farm that emplys yung adults with disabilities assuming it wuld g the way he always has. He’d be interested at first, then bred, and then — because he was bred — silly and unsafe arund the equipment in a way that wuld get him remved frm the prgram. It was his pattern and if there’s anything we’ve learned, autistic kids lve repeating their patterns.
Surprisingly, after a year, we were tld he’d made it nt a landscaping team. “What d yu d in the team?” we asked. Eth an listed a few machines we assumed he was watching ther peple perate. We’ve lived with Ethan fr 21 years. We knw his limitatins.
At ur last meeting fr the visin statement, a man frm the farm read a reprt n Ethan. Ethan was perating thse machines, safely and effectively, alng with the final line: “Ethan makes us laugh every day.” I culd hardly believe it.
Ethan wrte his wn visin statement this year. He read it alud:
“I plan t wrk at Prspect Meadw Farm until I retire and live. at hme with my family as lng as I can. My gals fr the future are t learn hw t drive a lawn mwer (割草机).”
I had tears in my eyes. Nt simply because Ethan had made his wn entirely reasnable visin statement, but because it invlved the part f his present life that brings him jy. After years f making up visins fr a future we never hnestly thught pssible, Ethan was ffering ne that was bth hpeful and extremely simple: I want my life t keep lking the way it des NOW.
    4. Hw did the authr feel abut writing a visin statement fr her sn?
    A. It was difficult.B. It was bring.
    C. It was annying.D. It was embarrassing.
    5. Why des the authr mentin Ethan’s pattern in paragraph 2?
    A. T shw her cncern fr Ethan’s safety.
    B. T shw her familiarity with autistic kids.
    C. T shw her lw expectatins fr Ethan’s farm jb.
    D. T shw her special respnsibility as Ethan’s parent.
    6. Hw did Ethan behave n the farm?
    A. He went beynd his limits.
    B. He made silly mistakes.
    C. He liked watching thers wrking.
    D. He culd hardly get alng with thers.
    7. Which statement will the authr prbably agree with?
    A. Success is built n failure.
    B. Never lse faith in yur high gals.
    C. Family supprt helps t develp cnfidence.

根据第一段的“In reality, as Ethan grew up and his limitatins became clearer, I fund it harder every year t write the shrt paragraph.(事实上,随着伊桑的成长,他的缺陷也越来越明显,我发现写这简短的一段话一年比一年难。)” 故选A。
根据第二段的“He’d be interested at first, then bred, and then — because he was bred — silly and unsafe arund the equipment in a way that wuld get him remved frm the prgram. It was his pattern and if there’s anything we’ve learned, autistic kids lve repeating their patterns.(他一开始会感兴趣,然后感到无聊,然后——因为他感到无聊——在设备周围变得愚蠢和不安全,以至于他会被踢出这个项目。如果我们学到什么的话,这是他的模式:自闭症儿童喜欢重复他们的模式。)”可知,作者在第二段提到了伊森的模式是为了表示她对儿子在农场工作表现的期望值不高。故选C。
    【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段的“Ethan was perating thse machines, safely and effectively, alng with the final line: “Ethan makes us laugh every day.” I culd hardly believe it.(伊森安全有效地操作着这些机器,最后一句是:“伊森每天都让我们开怀大笑。”我简直不敢相信。)”可知,伊桑在农场的表现超越了自己的局限。故选A。
根据最后一段的“I had tears in my eyes. Nt simply because Ethan had made his wn entirely reasnable visin statement, but because it invlved the part f his present life that brings him jy. After years f making up visins fr a future we never hnestly thught pssible, Ethan was ffering ne that was bth hpeful and extremely simple: I want my life t keep lking the way it des NOW.(我眼里含着泪水。不仅仅是因为伊桑的愿景陈述是完全合理的,还因为它涉及到他现在生活中给他带来快乐的部分。多年来,我们一直在设想一个我们从未真正认为可能实现的未来,而伊森提出了一个既充满希望又极其简单的愿景:我希望我的生活保持现在的样子。)”可知,伊森现在的生活充满快乐,因此他希望未来能够像现在一样,因此作者希望伊森在未来能够达到像现在最好的状态。故选D。

A new study frm researchers at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles(UCLA)seems t suggest busy students listening t sped-up vide lectures can actually understand a lt.
In the experiment, Alan Castel and a Dilln Murphy divided 231 undergraduate participants int fur grups. Each grup watched tw vide lectures: ne abut the Rman Empire and the ther n real estate appraisals The vides, at nrmal speed, ranged hetween13 and 15 minutes lng. One grup watched each vide at its nrmal speed, the secnd watched them at 1.5 times nrmal speed, the third at duble speed and the furth at 2.5 times nrmal speed.
After each individual vide, the participants were given a test made up f 20 questins t measure hw well they remembered the infrmatin. The nrmal-speed grup averaged 26 crrect answers ut f 40, and were clsely fllwed by the 1.5-speed grup and duble-speed grup, which each scred 25 ut f 40. It wasn’t until participants watched the vide at 2.5-speed that their perfrmance n the test significantly drpped, t an average f 22 ut f 40 questins answered crrectly. A week later, when the same participants tk new tests withut rewatching the vides, the new scres saw the same rder f decrease (降低).
The study suggests that, while sped-up vides did nt imprve student learning cmprehensin (理解力), they did nt put them far behind, either —at least until the speed reached 2.5 times nrmal speed..
The increase in efficiency that students get frm finishing a vide in half the time culd allw them t take mre effective ntes. “Students can spend the same amunt f time studying, but in perhaps a better way,” Murphy said “That pens the dr t the ptential benefits f that additinal study pprtunity.”
The vides in the study were fr subjects that can be explained in wrds pretty easily, Murphy explained, whereas students watching a difficult physics r chemistry lecture at high speeds might see different results. Further research n the same tpic culd prvide details n hw well students remember infrmatin ffered at higher speeds when it cmes t thse kinds f mre challenging tpics, the researchers said.
    8. Which best describes hw the participants watched the tw vides?
    A. The first grup watched vides at different speeds.
    B. The secnd grup watched the tw vides twice.
    C. The third grup watched fr less than 15 minutes.
    D. The furth grup watched fr mre than 40 minutes.
    9. What did the experiment shw?
    A. The nrmal-speed watchers did n better than ther grups.
    B. Sped-up vides smetimes affected nly a little t the watchers.
    C. There were great differences amng the 4 grups in the testing result.
    D. The cntent f the vide made n difference in the experiment.
    10. What is Murphy’s attitude t watching vide lectures at higher speeds?
    A. Critical.B. Curius.C. Dubtful.D. Supprtive.
    11. What might the researchers at UCLA d in their future studies?
    A. Give participants mre difficult tests after they watch vides.
    B. Observe the effects f watching vides at lwer speeds.
    C. Let participants watch vides f mre cmplex tpics.
    D. Ask students frm varius majrs t watch vides.
C 9. B 10. D 11. C
