Imagine if there were a rbtic fish that filtered (过滤) micrplastic ut f the water as it swam. Well, nw there is ne, and it’s the physical versin f the winning cncept in the first-ever Natural Rbtics Cntest.
Annunced this May, the University f Surrey’s Natural Rbts Cntest invited members f the public t submit their ideas fr animal-r plant-inspired rbts capable f perfrming activities that wuld help the wrld.
Plans called fr experts frm varius British and Eurpean research institutes t select what they thught was the best cncept, which wuld subsequently be made int a functinal type. Engineers wuld prceed t further develp the technlgy.
The winning entry turned ut t be the plastic-cllecting Rb-fish, designed by chemistry undergrad Eleanr Mackintsh — wh is a University f Surrey student. Mackintsh said, “Fish’s gills are an incredible mechanism in nature that are specialized t filter xygen int the bldstream-s I adapted my design frm that, with the purpse f addressing the plastic pllutin in the water.”
The rbt swims by mving its tail, hlding its muth wide pen t cllect water and micrplastics in an internal cavity (腔) as it des s. Once that cavity is full, the rbt clses its muth, pens its gill flaps (鳃瓣) , and pushes the water ut thrugh thse flaps by raising the flr f the cavity. A fine net attached t the gill flaps allws the water t pass thrugh, but captures the micrplastic.
In its current physical frm, the 50-cm-lng Rb-fish cllects micrplastic as small as 2millimeters. It als sprts nbard sensrs t mnitr underwater envirnment, plus it uses an IMU (inertial measurement unit) t track its mvements within the water.

Nw, public schls in Flrida have been required t teach five r mre hurs abut mental health fr students in grades 6-12. This new directive was apprved by the Flrida Bard f Educatin in July and is being carried ut as a ptential lifesaver.
