Parents and bksellers tend t blame the grwing appeal f nline entertainment and handheld games, but research frm the US is challenging these assumptins.
    Michael Nrris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the mnthly Bk Publishing Reprt which shw that, despite the best intentins, it is well-meaning mthers and fathers wh ften stp their sns and daughters frm picking up the reading habit.
    “Parents have t much f a rle in deciding which bks their children are ging t read,” said Nrris. “It is turning children ff.”
    The results f a number f surveys Nrris has carried ut with hundreds f American bk-sellers ver the past year have prvided the basis fr a series f tips fr parents designed t help children find enjyment in bks.
    One f his tips is t make sure children talk directly t a librarian r a bkseller, while parents stand well back. Parents shuld allw children t chse their wn reading material. “Even if a mther r father is just standing with the child when the bkseller asks them what they like t read, we have fund that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants t hear. It will nt be the same answer they wuld give alne,” said Nrris.

T slve the tugh prblem, the team wanted t create a mre practical versin that des nt need t return t a dcking statin when it runs ut f pwer.
    Therefre, they designed an n-bard slar cell that culd cntinuusly ensure that the cckrach stays charged while it wrks. Hwever, cckraches have a limited surface area available fr all the cmpnents necessary t mve its legs and keep it pwered. The slutin was t design a special “backpack” that culd neatly carry bth the wireless leg-cntrl mdule and rechargeable battery. This was attached t the tp f the insect n its frnt, and was 3D printed t fit perfectly t the curved surface f cckrach.
