It's an attractive idea: by playing nline prblem-slving, matching and ther games fr a few minutes a day, peple can imprve such mental abilities as reasning, language skills and memry. But whether these games deliver n thse prmises is up fr debate.

Next, the vlunteers cmpleted 12 cgnitive tests assessing memry, reasning and language skills. They faced memry exercises, spatial reasning tasks such as mentally rtating bjects and pattern-finding puzzles, and strategy challenges.
When researchers lked at the results, they saw that brain trainers n average had n mental ascendancy ver the ther grup in memry, language skills and reasning. Even amng thse wh had used training prgrams fr at least 18 mnths, brain training didn't increase thinking abilities abve the level f peple wh didn't use the prgrams.
"N matter hw we sliced the data, we were unable t find any evidence that brain training was assciated with cgnitive abilities," says Stjanski, "brain training may be beneficial in specific situatins, but part f ur gal was t lk at brain training in the real wrld."
That real wrld may be the best brain trainer, says Elizabeth Stine, a cgnitive aging scientist at the University f Illinis. While it's pssible t imprve mental abilities, she advcates practicing thse skills in different real-life situatins. "That's a much better use f ne's time than sitting at a cmputer and ding little tasks."
32. What's the purpse f the research?
A. T test participants' mental ability in the real wrld.
B. T discver new ways t imprve peple's intelligence.
C. T find ut whether brain trainers are beneficial t users.
D. T cmpare the effects f tw types f brain training games.
33. What scientific methds were applied t the research?
A. Survey and cmparisn.B. Experiment and analysis.
C. Interview and examinatin.D. Observatin and recrding.
34. What des the underlined wrd "ascendancy" in paragraph 5 prbably mean?
