Scientists have fund that when a hive f hneybees is under threat frm the mite called Varra destructr, which can cause the cllapse f hneybee clnies, the bees will respnd by changing the way they interact with ne anther.
By examining vides recrded inside the hives, the researchers fund that when hives had mites, fraging bees perfrmed imprtant dances t indicate the directin f fd surces and kept themselves away frm the centre f the clny where yung bees and the queen stayed. This may help t keep the infectin at a level that can be cntrlled, limiting the amunt f damage. “Fragers are ne f the main entrance rutes fr the mites,” said Cini.
The team then carried ut experiments in the labratry, artificially infecting small grups f abut 12 yung bees with the mites and cmparing them t uninfected grups.
