Igr Sikrsky was brn n May 25th, 1889. Sikrsky develped an interest in natural sciences in his yuth. He began studying at the Saint Petersburg Maritime Cadet Crps at the age f 14. In 1906, he decided that his future lay in engineering, s he left t study in Paris. In 1907, he returned hme t cmplete his studies at the Mechanical Cllege f Kyiv Plytechnic Institute.
A year later n a trip t Germany with his father, he learned f the achievements f the Wright Brthers and Ferdinand vn Zeppelin’s airships. Sikrsky later said abut this: “Within twenty-fur hurs, I’d decided t pursue aviatin.”
Sikrsky then started his wrk n designing a helicpter. The first tw attempts failed in 1909 and 1910 s he stpped and turned t fixed-wing aircraft (飞行器). His first attempt, the S-l, als failed. But his secnd attempt, the S-2, was a success. He cntinued t develp his knwledge t imprve his airplane mdels. During this time,he als gt his pilt’s license(执照). Sikrsky finally cmpleted the VS-300 and pilted its first flight himself. It was the first successful helicpter f the United States and by 1940 served as the mdel fr all single-rtr (单旋翼)helicpters.
Sikrsky’s wrk cntributed greatly t the aviatin industry and he was recgnized as the father f helicpters because f his pineering designs. He fficially retired in 1957, but he cntinued t wrk as a cnsultant (顾问)until his death in 1972 at the age f 83.
