The first time a trtise walked thrugh my hut at Middle Camp n Aldabra Atll, I was amazed. I grabbed my camera and carefully psitined myself t take this wildlife encunter. The secnd time: same thing. The third time: I picked up my phne and tk a snapsht. By the furth r fifth time, I didn’t even lk when I felt smething bump int me. I knew what it was.
I was there t sht a stry abut island restratin in the Seychelles, far ff the east cast f Africa in the Indian Ocean. Until rughly the middle f the past century, the small island natin shwed signs f real envirnmental killing — lcal vegetatin cleared t make way fr ccnut plantatins, freign rats and mice running uncntrlled, native sea turtles and giant trtises being explited. Bidiversity seemed destryed. But then the cuntry experienced a shift in cnservatin awareness — and the giant Aldabra trtises are amng its mst visible signs.
Every mrning when I wke up and walked utside the hut, I had t remind myself that I hadn’t traveled back in time. I culd see flightless Aldabra rails, ccnut crabs the size f dinner plates, and giant trtises — rughly fur feet lng and weighing up t 550 punds — just wandering arund. The number f sharks in the bay was crazy. Frigatebirds and bbies (鲣鸟) nested in the mangrves (a kind f tree). When we left ur hut drs pen, which we ften did t let in air, the trtises wuld walk right thrugh.
In the late afternn r early evening, whenever they’d finished eating, the trtises wuld drp themselves dwn and fall asleep with their heads utstretched. That made nighttime trips t the uthuse perilus. T get there, we’d have t g 200 feet int the mangrves, negtiating what I called the trtise slalm trail.
It was a track withut a pattern, because f curse they picked different places t sleep every night. Aviding them was imprtant: Falling headfirst ver a trtise nt the sharp cral rck culd lead t serius injury n an island far frm medical facilities. Nthing was easy n Aldabra, and much f it was insanely difficult. Yet living amng the trtises in this primrdial place, in ne f the last spts where reptiles still rule, was ne f the happiest times f my life.
24. Hw did the authr feel abut his final meeting with the trtise in his rm?
A. CalmB. ExcitedC. CncernedD. Disturbed
25. What made the wildlife n the island suffer during the last century?
A. Intrducing freign species.B. Killing t many rats and mice.
C. Planting lts f ccnut trees.D. Repairing the building n the island.
26. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 3?
A. T stress the imprtance f their wrk.
B. T intrduce hw large the trtises are.
C. T present his daily rutine n the island.
D. T shw hw the wildlife is diverse n the island.
27. What might be the suitable title fr this passage?
A. Island fills with curius turists.B. Aldabra calls fr wildlife prtectin.
C. Trtises rule n this islated island again.D. Effrts are made t prtect the envirnment.

Laughing tgether is an imprtant way fr peple t cnnect and bnd. Thugh the causes f laughter can vary widely acrss individuals and grups, the sund f a laugh is usually recgnizable between peple belnging t different cultures. In humans, laughter can express a range f emtins frm psitive feelings like enjyment t negative nes such as disgust. But what abut animals ther than humans? D they “laugh”, and are the causes f their laughter similar t thse f human laughter?
Many animals prduce sunds during play that are unique t that pleasant scial interactin. Researchers cnsider such sunds t be an analgue f human laughter. Recently, scientists investigated play sund t see hw cmmn it was amng animals. The team identified 65 species that “laughed” while playing; mst were mammals (哺乳动物), but a few bird species demnstrated playful laughter t. This new analysis culd help scientists t trace the evlutinary rigins f human laughter, accrding t a new study.
When Sasha Winkler, a dctral candidate f bilgical anthrplgy at the University f Califrnia. Ls Angeles (UCLA), previusly wrked with rhesus macaques (恒河猴), she had nticed that the mnkeys panted (喘气) quietly while playing. Many ther primates (灵长类动物) are als knwn t sund during play. Hwever, reprts f playful laughter were ntably absent in studies describing fish, amphibians and reptiles, perhaps because there is sme questin as t whether r nt play exists at all in thse animal grups.
Laughter in humans is thught t have riginated during play, a hypthesis supprted by the play-related panting laughter f many primate species. “Human laughter may have evlved frm a similar panting sund that ver evlutinary time became the sunded ‘ha ha ha’ that we use tday. Peple still laugh during play, but we als invlve laughter in language and nn-play behavirs,” Winkler said.
“It’s really fascinating that s many animals have a similar functin f sund during play,” Winkle tld the Live Science, a science news website. “But we d have these unique parts f human laughter that are als an imprtant area fr future study.”
28. What d we knw abut human laughter?
A. It is nt shared amng strangers.
B. It is created ut f the same reasn.
C. It may appear when peple hate smething.
D. It sunds different between Eurpean and Asian.
29. What des the underlined wrd “analgue” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Smething cmmn.B. Smething similar.
C. Smething symblic.D. Smething attractive.
30. Why is there a lack f reprts in laughter f sme animal grups?
A. Because they are nt well evlved and emtinless
B. Because play is nt a definite behavir amng them.
C. Because they are nt as interesting as ther animals.
D. Because nly mammals and primates are able t laugh.
31. What is prbably the fcus f future study n laughter?
A. Distinctive features f human laughter.
B. Different functins f animal laughter.
C. The rigin and develpment f human laughter.
D. The relatinship between animal laughter and intelligence.

Landslides f ash, gas and rck that flw ut dwnhill during vlcanic eruptins may be even mre dangerus than scientists had realized.
Labratry and field measurements shw pulses f high pressure (高压脉冲) frm within these slides, knwn as pyrclastic (火山碎屑的) flws. Thse pressures can be far strnger, and mre destructive, than disaster evaluatins typically assume. “It’s nt a small difference,” says Cert Lube, a vlcanlgist at Massey University in Palmerstn Nrth, New Zealand. Cnventinal disaster evaluatins might suggest a certain flw will nly burst windws, but he says, “When actually, the pressures are s strng, they knck dwn the walls f the building.”
Pyrclastic flws are the deadliest vlcanic disaster, in part because f the pressures they cause. Due t their vilent nature, researchers ften have t evaluate average pressures in the flws using cmputer simulatins (模拟) based n measurements f gelgic depsits left by past flws.
At Massey University in Palmerstn Nrth, New Zealand, researchers freed mixtures f ht rck, ash and gas dwn a channel t cpy vlcanic landslides knwn as pyrclastic flws. These pyrclastic flws have an inner rhythm (节奏) that makes them especially destructive. T directly study the inner wrkings f these frces f nature, Lube and clleagues reprduced smaller versins f the flws in experiments, measuring the destructive pwer. That let the team calculate the pressures inside the flws. The researchers als analyzed the first measurements f pressures in natural flws, cllected in 2019, when pyrclastic flws burst frm the Whakaari vlcan and swallwed a set f sensrs.
T the researchers’ surprise, pressures in the flws shk rhythmically. These pressure pulses wuld successively(连续地,接连地) damage barriers like blws frm an electric drill, Lube says. The pulses smetimes smashed mre than three times as hard as the average pressure evaluates typically suggested by cnventinal simulatins.
32. Why d researchers use cmputers t simulate pyrclastic flws?
A. T find ut their inner rhythm.B. T evaluate their vilent nature.
C. T figure ut their average pressures.D. T cpy the scene f vlcanic landslides.
33. What des the furth paragraph fcus n?
A. Hw t prepare simulatin experiment.
B. Hw t carry ut the simulatin experiment.
C. Why t cnduct the simulatin experiment.
D. Why t measure the inner rhythm f pyrclastic flws.
34. What dcs the underlined wrd “smashed” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Crashed.B. Bmbed.C. Cnflicted.D. Increased.
35. What’s the mst suitable title fr the text?
A. A Well-knwn LandslideB. The Deadliest Vlcanic Disaster
C. Mre Destructive Pyrclastic FlwsD. A Pyrclastic Flws Simulatin Experiment
