Maria Sibylla Merian-drawing frm life
In 17th-century Eurpe, it was unheard f fr a wman t travel by herself, but that didn’t stp Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1699, she and her 2l-year-ld daughter Drthea sailed frm Amsterdam t Suriname in Suth America. The three-mnth vyage was dangerus but she was determined t g. Besides, she was n a bld missin. She wuld be the first persn t g t a freign cuntry t study and paint insects directly frm nature.
When they arrived in Suriname, Maria and Drthea started wrking. Day after day, they tk their painting materials int the ht and humid rainfrest t cllect and draw insects and plants. Artists had never dne such a thing befre. Still life painters drew frm dead specimens. But Maria had always been interested in painting living animals and plants, and her favurite subjects were insects.
In the rainfrest, she climbed ladders t study and cllect insects. She had trees cut dwn s she culd see what lived at the tp level f the frest mre than a hundred feet verhead. Maria cmbined bth art and science in her wrk. As a skilled bserver, she kept detailed ntes.
Maria planned t stay in Suriname fr five years, painting and cllecting insects and plants that Eurpeans had never seen. She learnt abut the medicinal plants f the area and expanded her interest t spiders, birds, lizards and snakes. She planned t publish a bk f her new wrk n her return t Amsterdam.
After tw years, she had t leave Suriname. The heat was unbearable and she was ill with malaria. But she had mre than enugh material fr a bk. In June 1701, Maria and Drthea sailed back t Amsterdam with many paintings and specimens—butterflies preserved in brandy, bttles with crcdiles and snakes, lizards’ eggs and bxes f pressed insects.
