On my way hme I sptted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried t capture its splendur. Rushing hme, I ppped the spent film in a special little envelpe and sent it ff t a phtgraphy stre, desperate t see hw it came ut. I tk many phts then and lved the fact that when yu prcessed yur film yu gt back clur phts which frze the precius mments, gently encuraging the hbby and the payments fr prcessing.
As I grew int adulthd, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the wrk calls, my eyes caught a bx in the crner f the rm. I suddenly felt a sense f sadness. The stress grwing ver these years had pushed the camera frm beside my pillw t the bx in the crner. I thught I needed a change.
I tk ut the camera and dusted it dwn. It was a great jy that it still wrked. I bught new film and tk the camera everywhere I went. Nw it is always n hand t accmpany me n jurneys, t allw me time t myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize sme mments fr myself t take phts, t bserve the wrld arund me.
The wall f my rm nw hlds all my camera equipment n display, alng with phts I’ve taken. A 2012 study cined the term “IKEA effect” demnstrating that adults wh successfully cmpleted tasks valued the cmpleted prducts mre highly than cmparable prducts they did nt create themselves.
A new paper, authred by psychlgist Lauren Marsh, reprts an initial experiment in which 64 children aged 3 t 6 were given the pprtunity t interact with tw My “mnsters” — ne that they created themselves fllwing instructins frm a kit, and anther that they merely held n t while playing a shrt game. Befre creating r hlding either mnster, the experimenters had each child rate hw much they liked each mnster, either rating a mnster identical t the mnster abut t be created, r rating the mnster the child wuld g n t hld. These ratings were repeated after creating r hlding a mnster t assess hw much each mnster’s perceived value was affected by the previus interactin. If children value bjects mre highly just because they successfully created the bjects — if kids shw an IKEA effect—we’d expect kids’ ratings t increase mre than fr the mnster they just held. And this is precisely what the researchers fund, but nly fr the 5- and 6-year-lds. The 3- and 4-year-lds shwed n such effect.
Acrss tw subsequent studies, the researchers varied the features f the experiments, including whether creating the mnster required lwer r higher levels f effrt, whether the created mnster was wned by the child, and whether the finished mnster wuld be displayed in public. These factrs didn’t have any reliable effects n the 5- and 6-year-ld participants’ ratings f hw much they valued the mnsters, even thugh the children, n average, shwed an IKEA effect. This prvides sme evidence against the idea that these factrs are what drives the IKEA effect, at least in yung.
It’s always pssible that effrt, wnership, r signaled cmpetence makes a difference, but the experiments didn’t measure the effects f these factrs in an effective way. Marsh and clleagues have their wn prpsal: beginning arund age 5, children cme t value their wn creatins because they “becme part f wh we are, a cncrete representatin f self.”
8. What did the researchers have the children d during the initial experiment?
A. Cmplete a shrt game.B. Fllw instructins frm a kit.
C. Chse their favurite ne frm tw tys.D. Express their fndness degree fr the mnsters.
9. What was the purpse f the initial experiment?
A. T evaluate the results f the interactins.
B. T test if IKEA effect applies t yung kids.
C. T check if IKEA effect bsts children’s creativity.
D. T gather data n the perceived value f the mnsters.
10. What can we learn frm the subsequent studies?
A. Effrt level cntributes t children’ preference.
B. Public remarks have an impact n kids’ assessment.
C. Influence f different features is incnclusive in children.
D. External factrs are undubtedly the drivers f IKEA effect.
11. What might be the cause f the IKEA effect in kids accrding t Marsh?
A. Realizatin f self-value.B. Strng sense f cmpetitin.
C Attachment t the creatins.D. Effective ways f measurement.
D
Here are the simple instructins given by a Harvard University assistant prfessr t peple participating in a recent science study: “Imagine the fllwing scene. Visualize it in yur mind’s eye, as vividly as yu can: a persn walks int a rm and kncks a ball ff a table.”
The assistant prfessr, Tmer Ullman, then asked thse in the study abut their mental images: “Did yu see hw big the ball was? Hw abut the persn’s hair clr?” Mst participants visualized the frmer but nt the latter. Ullman and his clleagues term this absence f details “nncmmitment” t mental imagery (意象).
Brain imaging studies shw that mental imagery engages the same neurns (744770) in similar ways as perceptin (EXXI). Visualizing things seems t have much in cmmn with actually seeing them. But if mental images are indeed pictures, why d they lack such simple details?
Ullman and his clleagues cnducted a series f experiments in which participants visualized the ball and table scene and were then presented with the questins selected by the researchers. The findings shw 78% f the participants did nt visualize at least tw details. Peple are ften unaware f hw little detail their mental images cntain until asked. They dn’t ntice hw much they dn’t ntice. It has nthing t d with a persn frgetting the cntents f a mental image, and it als is fund in peple with vivid imaginatins.
“Nearly everyne can tell yu the size f the ball but nt the persn’s hair clr,” Ullman says. “It’s like there’s ne hierarchy when we cnstruct images, and spatial prperties are high up. Then things like clrs are further dwn.” This fits with Ksslyn’s “skeletal image” thery, in which verall shape is generated first, and ther details are added as needed.
“There are imagery-based systems fr interviewing peple wh witnessed a crime t guide them thrugh trying t visualize it as accurately as pssible,” Ksslyn says. Imaginatin is an issue, but understanding nncmmitment better culd help develp ways f getting mre accurate eyewitness evidence, he says. “That’s wrth a lt.”
12. What des nncmmitment t mental imagery refer t?
A. Imagining a scene in ne’s mind vividly.B. Remembering the size f a ball exactly.
C. Picturing things in ne’s mind partially.D. Frgetting a persn’s hair clur entirely.
13. Why d peple ignre sme details when visualizing things?
A They fail t realize.B. They have pr memries.
C. They lack a rich imaginatin.D. They think in a wrng way.
14. What des the underlined wrd “hierarchy” prbably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Prejudice.B. Order.C. Height.D. Standard.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The ptential value f the research.B. The further prspect f the research.
C. The imprtance f lking fr a witness.D. The difficulty in finding evidence f a crime.
