A lt f peple are scared f spiders (蜘蛛) and cnsider their webs t be dirt. But, grwing up in Argentina and Italy, I remember seeing webs in the crners f my huse and thinking they were grgeus. Tday I create wrks f art using these beautiful structures.
In my studi, I have a cllectin f spider webs and hundreds f different spiders. I spend a lt f time experimenting with them. I put a spider in a bx and bserve hw it ges abut cnstructing its web. I smetimes turn the bx n its side t see hw the spider reacts. Smetimes I put anther spider in the bx t see hw it wrks with the structure the last ne left in place. It may ignre that web and start again frm scratch (从头开始) r begin adding t it.
I wrked n digitizing webs. Thugh I see myself as an artist, I actually trained as an architect and the idea is t cmpare the prperties f spiders' webs with architectural structures t see if there are any similarities.
Of the thusands f species arund the wrld, the ne that interests me the mst is the Stegdyphus dumicla. In grups, they make thusands f single threads ( 线), which are then entangled ( 缠) int a giant web that can lift the spiders straight up and transprt them away. It is knwn as“ballning”. During the UN Climate Change Cnference in Paris, fr example, I exhibited the vast“aercene”glbes based n it. They aren't sculptures but rather air-filled bubbles (气泡) that might ne day flat arund the wrld, pwered nly by wind and the heat f the sun. I use them t challenge ppular ideas abut energy use and transprtatin.
My ambitin is t take my wrk with spiders t the Internatinal Space Statin, t cnduct live experiments t see hw they might behave and hw they wuld build webs in a new envirnment withut gravity. I am speaking t NASA abut it. I hpe t turn them int spidernauts.

Thanks t scial media, we are mre active in ur virtual wrld than we are in real life. Whether we are ut with friends r sitting at hme, we are glued t ur mbile phnes. We dcument almst everything we d, ck, and eat — but nt withut editing first and adding sme filters (滤镜). While yu might be engaging in this behaviur fr fun, researchers frm Flrida State University, revealed a direct link between psting edited phts n Instagram and risk factrs fr eating disrders.
Specifically, digitally editing pictures t imprve persnal appearance befre psting them n Instagram increased weight and shape cncerns in cllege students. Psting phts cntributed t greater anxiety and increased urges t restrict fd intake and exercise cmpared with nt psting phts.
“As mre peple turn t scial media t stay cnnected, it's critically imprtant t let thers see yu as yu are. Cmpared with edited phts, we saw n decrease in the number f likes r cmments fr unedited phts n Instagram; knwing this culd reduce harmful pressures t change hw yu lk,”said c-authr Pamela K Keel.
T much scial media use has lng been assciated with prmting disrdered eating behaviurs as well as ther mental health issues. S, using a tw-stage design, the present study tried t figure ut hw psting edited phts relates t eating disrders, as well as anxiety and depressive symptms (抑郁症状), in cllege students.
In stage ne, the research team examined assciatins between psting edited phts and mental health measures in 2,485 undergraduates. While in stage tw, they examined assciatins between psting edited phts and eating disrder risk factrs in 80 undergraduates wh supprted psting edited phts in stage ne and vlunteered fr the experimental prtin f the study.
The findings shwed that thse wh supprted psting edited phts reprted greater disrdered eating behaviurs and anxiety than thse wh did nt, but n differences were fund fr depressive symptms.

A study published by Girlguiding has revealed that half f girls feel restricted by gender (性别) steretyping, with children as yung as seven believing they are valued mre fr their appearance than fr their achievements r character. It is n cincidence (巧合) that in the same week, anther study has shwn a quarter f girls exhibit symptms f depressin by the age f 14.
By the time humans reach adlescence (青春期), there will be distinct differences between male and female brains. Traditinally, psychlgists assume this is because men and wmen are naturally different, which has led t a widespread cultural belief that, left t their wn devices, girls wuld naturally fall t pink things and baking, aviding“manly”activities such as sprts and science.
What this assumptin fails t take int accunt is the phenmenn f “neurplasticity (神经可塑性)”, cmbined with gender steretypes. Brain develpment is decided by what we d, and therefre if adults guide children twards certain activities based n their gender, they influence hw their minds grw.
As smene wh visits mre than 150 schls thrughut the UK every year, I've nticed that girls in a single-sex envirnment tend t be mre cnfident and mre likely t develp an interest in STEM subjects (science, technlgy, engineering and mathematics). I put this dwn t the fact that, in a single-sex schl, there can be n such thing as“girl”and“by”subjects. It gives us an insight int what sciety might be like if we levelled the playing field.
I try nt t use gendered terms such as“girls”,“bys”r“ladies”when giving classes in schls. Teachers can nly give yung peple the tls they need t challenge harmful cultural values that damage self-esteem (自尊) and mental health if there is sufficient space within the schl week t encurage discussin and debate.
The mainstream media can assist in this effrt. After all, while a girl grwing up in 2017 may have received the message that it is pssible fr her t becme a leader f the gvernment, she will als have learnt that hw her legs lk in a pencil skirt still matters.
32. What is the hidden cnnectin between the tw studies?
A. They bth fcused n 14-year-lds.
B. Their findings are the cause and effect f each ther.
C. The findings frm ne study supprt the results f the ther.
D. They used a similar methdlgy t research different phenmena.
33. What is the authr's attitude twards psychlgists' assumptin in paragraph 2?
A. Dubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Favurable. D. Disapprving.
34. Why are the girls in single-sex schls mre cnfident accrding t the authr?
A. They develp strnger interests in STEM subjects.
B. They are given girl-targeted teaching appraches.
C. They stay away frm traditinal gender expectatins.
D. They are invlved in varius cnfidence-bsting activities.
35. What des the last paragraph imply abut the mainstream media?
A. It has put much emphasis n plitical issues.
B. It has dne well in establishing beauty standards.
C. It can prevent yung girls frm achieving pwerful rles.
D. It hlds a prfund influence n girls' beliefs abut gender rles.
