Yu dn’t need t be a whale expert t knw that these large animals are mst at hme in the depths f the wrld’s many ceans. Yu may nt be surprised then, that there were n survivrs when 477 pilt whales became stuck n New Zealand’s remte Chatham Islands in Octber. It was ne f the cuntry’s largest mass stranding (搁浅) incidents.
Whereas in the past lcal authrities were able t quickly mbilize teams t try and rescue the whales, that ideal result was impssible this time. In a pst published by the New Zealand whale prtectin nn-prfit rganizatin Prject Jnah, the grup highlighted the many difficulties invlved in any attempt at saving the whales. The remte Chatham Islands have a small ppulatin, meaning trained dctrs wuld be unable t get t the scene in time. In additin, there was a risk psed by predatrs attracted t the beach which threatened bth rescue teams and any ther surviving whales.
Due t these factrs, the whales that managed t survive fr a while nshre had their dreams f returning t the cean cut shrt. The decisin was finally made t euthanize all f the remaining living whales n the beach. The general manager f Prject Jnah, Daren Grver, described the utcme as “heartbreaking”, accrding t the New Yrk Pst.
This event tk place less than a mnth after 230 whales were fund stranded n the Australian island f Tasmania. Frtunately, abut 30 f thse animals were able t be saved in time by lcal authrities, accrding t NPR.
The cause f these mass stranding events is nt clear at the mment, althugh varius theries have been raised. Grver said that there may be an issue with the animals’ echlcatin ability-the sense that allws them t navigate thrugh the water.
14. Why culdn’t the lcal authrities rescue the whales this time?
A. The number f stranded whales was t large.
B. The majrity f whales were seriusly injured.
C. Trained dctrs in the area were all already busy.

Clin Chapman, the funder f Ltus Cars, was ne f mtr racing’s mst influential engineers. Between 1962 and 1978 Ltus wn seven Frmula One cnstructrs champinships. He summed up his philsphy as “simplify, then add lightness”. It appears t be an uncmmn insight. A paper published in Nature suggests that humans struggle with subtractive (减法的) thinking. When asked t imprve smething, they tend t suggest adding new things rather than remving what is already there, even when additins lead t sub-par (低于标准的) results.
The research was mtivated by everyday bservatin rather than psychlgical thery, says Gabrielle Adams, the paper’s first authr, wh cites flk wisdm such as ‘less is mre’ and ‘keep it simple’. Perhaps the need fr such reminders was evidence f a blind spt in peple’s thinking?
Alng with clleagues at the University f Virginia, Dr. Adams cnducted a series f bservatinal studies. In ne, when participants were asked t alter an essay they had written, 16% cut wrds while 80% added them. Others gave similar results. Of 827 suggestins received by the new bss f an American university fr hw the institutin culd be imprved, 581 invlved adding new things and just 70 suggested remving smething.
Having established that additin des indeed seem t be mre ppular than subtractin, the next step was t wrk ut why. One pssibility was that peple were cnsidering subtractive ptins, but deliberately chsing nt t pursue them. Anther was that they were nt even thinking f them in the first place.
Let’s enter a new set f experiments. One experiment asked participants t redesign a lpsided (不平衡的) Leg structure s that it culd supprt a huse-brick. Participants culd earn a dllar fr fixing the prblem, but each piece f Leg they added cu that reward by ten cents. Even then, nly 41% wrked ut that simplifying the structure by remving a single blck, rather than strengthening it by adding mre, which was the way t maximise the payut. Anther example, asking peple t make a glf curse wrse rather than better did nt change their preference fr additins, which suggested that many were simply nt thinking f the pssibility, at least at first.
What all this amunts t, says Benjamin Cnverse, anther f the study’s authrs, is evidence fr a new entry in the list f “cgnitive biases” that skew (歪曲) hw humans think. Instead f thinking a prblem thrugh and cming up with an ideal slutin, they tend t use cgnitive shrtcuts that are fast and mstly “gd enugh”.
Such research has inspired an entire field dedicated t wrking ut when such shrtcuts lead peple astray. Dr. Adams and her clleagues, meanwhile, are keen t investigate their result in mre detail. One questin is whether the preference fr additin is inbrn r learned.
18. The purpse f mentining the stry f Clin Chapman is ________.
A. t attract readers’ interestB. t highlight the experience
C. t present backgrund infrmatinD. t intrduce the tpic f the passage
19. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Peple prefer additins t subtractins in mst situatins.
B. Peple tend t use shrtcuts and cme up with ideal slutins.
C. Strengthening the structure is the way t maximize the payut.
D. The philsphy — “less is mre” is well-received.
20. What are Dr. Adams and his clleagues likely t study next?
A. The benefits f subtractins.
B. The ways f changing hw peple think.
C. The details f the preference fr additin.
D. The influence f cgnitive biases n peple’s thinking.
21. What des the authr prpse?
A. A way that peple autmatically think.B. A fact that peple rutinely frget.
C. A view that shrtcuts are gd enugh.D. A pint that additin is better.

Technlgy seems t discurage slw, immersive reading. Reading n a screen, particularly a phne screen, tires yur eyes and makes it harder fr yu t keep yur place. S nline writing tends t be mre skimmable and list-like than print.
We shuldn’t verplay this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as children as we learn t read mre skillfully. Nr is there anything new in these fears abut declining attentin spans, the length f time we spend cncentrating n reading. S far, the anxieties have prved t be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been wrried abut attentin span lately and see very shrt stries as signs f cultural decline,” the American authr Selvin Brwn wrte. “N ne ever said that pems were evidence f shrt attentin spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. Fr a start, it means that there is mre t read, because mre peple than ever are writing. And digital writing is meant fr rapid release and respnse. An nline article starts frming a cmment string underneath as sn as it is published. This mde f writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But ften it treats ther peple’s wrds as smething t be quickly harvested as fdder t say smething else. Everyne talks ver the tp f everyne else, desperate t be heard.
Perhaps we shuld slw dwn. Reading is cnstantly prmted as a scial gd and surce f persnal achievement. But this advcacy ften emphasizes “enthusiastic”, “passinate” r “eager” reading, nne f which adjectives suggest slw, quiet absrptin.
T a slw reader, a piece f writing can nly be fully understd by immersing neself in the wrds and their slw cmprehensin f a line f thught. The slw reader is like a swimmer wh stps cunting the number f pl laps he has dne and just enjy s hw his bdy feels and mves in water.
The human need fr this kind f deep reading is t tenacius fr any new technlgy t destry. We ften assume that technlgical change can’t be stpped and happens in ne directin, s that lder media like “dead-tree” bks are kicked ut by newer, mre virtual frms. In practice, lder technlgies can cexist with new nes. The Kindle and the iPad have nt killed ff the printed bk any mre than the car killed ff the bicycle. We still want t enjy slwly-frmed ideas and carefully-chsen wrds. Even in a fast-mving age, there is time fr slw reading.
22 What is the authr’s attitude twards Selvin Brwn’s pinin?
A. Favrable.B. Critical.C. Dubtful.D. Objective.
23. The authr wuld prbably agree that ________.
A. advcacy f passinate reading helps prmte slw reading
B. digital writing leads t t much speaking and nt enugh reflectin
C. the public shuld be aware f the impact skimming has n the brain
D. the number f Internet readers is declining due t the advances f technlgy
24. What des the underlined wrd “tenacius” in Paragraph 6 prbably mean?
A. Straight-frward.B. Old-fashined.
C. Deep-rted.D. Well-balanced.
25. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Slw Reading Is Here t Stay
B. Digital Technlgy Prevents Slw Reading
C. Screen vs. Print: Which Requires Deep Reading?
D. Reading Is Nt a Race: The Wnder f Deep Reading
