The ther day I came acrss a picture f my sn when he was 2 years ld during a trip t Puert Ric. Memries came flding back: the ball he kicked arund, and the jy f watching him play in the clear water.
“I remember that ty bus I’m hlding there.” he said, pinting t the picture.
That? I thught. We tk yu t ne f the mst beautiful places n earth, and what yu recall is a plastic ty we culd have bught anywhere?
As parents, we put s much effrt int creating experiences fr ur children that we hpe will paint a picture f a happy childhd. But what will ur children actually remember when they grw up?
Nra S. Newcmbe, a prfessr wh has studied children’s memries, draws a distinctin between explicit and implicit memries. Explicit memries are the nes that yu can reprt in spken wrds. Kids dn’t tend t have these befre age 2 and ften dn’t have them reliably befre age 7. But they d have implicit memries: feelings frm that time that they can’t necessarily put int wrds. “What happens t yu has an effect n yu, whether r nt yu can recall the details,” Nra explained.
“Besides, bth kids and adults are mre likely t remember things that carry a lt f negative feelings. There’s an evlutinary explanatin fr this,” said Nra, “Dangerus r negative things are mre likely t keep us safe.” This explains why yur child keeps reminding yu f that ne time yu were late t pick them up, but never mentins all thse days that yu did manage t arrive n time.
“Anyhw, yu can’t cntrl what yur kids end up remembering,” said Nra, “but we can trust that they’re ging t remember what’s imprtant t them.” The sight f my sn’s ty bus, fr example, culd ne day be the key that unlcks a fld f implicit memries, and while he may nt recall that early swim with us in the sea, he will, hpefully, be filled with the feeling f being lved.

B.They can be acquired and awakened intentinally.
C.They can assist peple in talking abut their experiences.
D.They can influence peple in an uncnscius way.
30.Why are negative memries mre likely t be kept accrding t Nra?
A.They help peple survive threats.B.They can generate strng emtins.
C.They are ften mentined repeatedly.D.They can turn int explicit memries easily.
31.What is the authr’s view n creating gd childhd memries fr kids?
A.It imprves the parent-child relatinship.B.It is beynd parents’ cntrl.
C.It is rather challenging.D.It is wrth the effrt.

Dryland ecsystems cver abut 40% f land n earth and supprt mre than 2 billin peple, and, nce degraded, they are difficult t restre. One technique fr restring dryland ecsystems with native plants — direct seeding — is prmising, but has many disadvantages.
“In degraded drylands nly arund 10% f directly swn seeds actually establish themselves,” says Frederick Dadzie, PhD candidate at UNSW. “And given that native seeds are expensive and ften in lw supply, this is full f prblems.”
Since ne f the ptential issues f degraded drylands is an absence f native micrrganisms(微生物)in the sil, the research team acquired native micrrganisms frm undisturbed sites and grew them. They then intrduced them t sil that cntained the seeds f native plants and planted them in degraded drylands.
They fund that micrrganisms were very beneficial fr getting the plants established. especially at the earlier stages when the seeds were grwing t seedlings(树苗). After that, the relatinship was less clear.
“That micrrganisms imprve germinatin(发芽)in degraded habitats is gd news fr ecsystem restratin," says Mr. Dadzie. “And what’s better: this is a simple, tw-step prcess that can be applied t restring dryland ecsystems. First, cmbining the seeds and sil int pellets(小球), and secnd, prviding thse pellets with the micrrganisms.”
“Nt nly are drylands valuable as fd bwls fr vast numbers f peple, but they als prvide ther services,” says Mr. Dadzie. “Due t the vastness f drylands, they have the highest ptential t absrb atmspheric carbn and therefre cntribute substantially t climate change.”
While this study was cnducted at a field site, the seedlings were prvided with bth shade and water. In the future, similar experiments shuld be repeated but under mre naturalized cnditins with envirnmentally determined sun and rain.
32.What des the underlined wrd “degraded” in Paragraph I mean?
A.Changed.B.Imprved.C.Wrsened.D.Simplified.
33.What des Mr. Dadzie think f using native micrrganisms t restre dryland ecsystems?
A.It is simple and prmising.B.It is cstly but practical.
C.It is challenging but effective.D.It is unprven and questinable.
34.What can we learn abut the study?
A.Its methd is ut f date.
B.It was cnducted in the labratry.
C.Further study in naturalized cnditins is necessary.
D.One type f native plant was invlved in the whle prcess.
35.Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.The slutin t climate change lies in drylands
B.Micrrganisms are the key t ecsystem restratin
C.Scientists have imprved the direct seeding technique
D.Lcal micrrganisms help native seeds take rt in drylands

It’s time t treat after-class reading seriusly!
Befre the Wrld Bk Day, the Students’ Unin did a survey abut the time which student spent n after-class reading per week. The chart shwed that senir 1 students spent an average f 7 hurs, senir 2 students spent 4 hurs, and senir 3 students spent nly 3 hurs n after-class reading.
There culd be varius reasns fr this situatin. Firstly, sme students may nt realize the imprtance f reading utside f class. Secndly, the wrklad f senir students tends t be heavier, leaving them with less time and energy fr leisure reading.
T address this issue, I wuld like t prpse a few suggestins. Firstly, the schl shuld rganize reading campaigns and events t create awareness abut the benefits f after-class reading. Additinally, teachers can integrate reading assignments int the curriculum and prvide interesting and diverse reading materials t mtivate students.
Let us all cme tgether and make after-class reading a pririty. Only by devting time t reading can we braden ur hrizns, enhance ur knwledge, and develp a lifelng lve fr bks.
