In dreaming up the prgramme Tennis and Literacy fr Yuth, as a mther, I had hped t share tw f my passins, tennis and reading, with children. Thrughut the year, I had advertised fr participants at lcal elementary schls and vlunteers at lcal high schls. With the help f kind peple, I applied fr mney. I was even able t secure a camp site fr the prgramme.
But n the first day f camp, despite my careful planning, things did nt g the way I had hped. Hectr and Adrian exchanged blws with their tennis rackets. Hectr struggled t his feet mments later, cvering a bldy nse with ne hand. Gergie and Eduard threw balls at each ther. Then during the reading time, I raced frm jyless child t demanding child, unable t persuade even ne t pen a bk. Mylea tld me they wuld rather be watching Nickelden at hme than learning stupid tennis and reading bring bks.
That evening, tired as I was, I called my vlunteers tgether fr a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a gd fellw system, where each vlunteer paired with a camper t help him r her during reading time. T stress praise and prgress, we established weekly prize ceremnies, presenting awards fr mst imprved reading, tennis and behavir.
In the fllwing days, these children, nce in bad md during reading time, untuched bks in their laps, began t find jy in reading a stry and playing tennis.
One day, Mylea shut the bk and asked me, “Can I take this t read it t my mm tnight?” Lking up at her eager face, I culdn’t help myself. I jumped t my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right ff the grund. “It’s all yurs!” I verjyed.

Having friends is bviusly gd fr cuntless reasns. And shwing the wrld that yu have lts f friends, fr example n scial media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, yur gal is t enlarge yur scial netwrk. Once peple see hw ppular yu are, they’ll want t jin that ppular circle, perhaps in the hpe that sme f yur ppularity will rub ff n them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle.
Hwever, can a persn even have t many friends at the same time? It’s always been a misunderstanding that if yu have mre friends, peple will be mre likely t want t be friends with yu.
In fact, a new study published in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy shws that having t many friends may wrk against yu. In a series f experiments, the authrs prve that peple usually prefer t befriend thse wh have fewer friends than they d, rather than thse with mre friends. The authrs call this phenmenn (现象) the “friend-number paradx (悖论)”, which is als the title f their new paper.
Scial ties are bviusly imprtant. Having mre f these cnnectins suggests greater scial value, and mre ptential pssibilities. S it seems reasnable t assume that peple will fcus their scial energies n making friends with peple wh have lts f friends already.
But the prblem is that these scial ties are nly valuable if there’s reciprcity (互惠) invlved. Friendship ges hand in hand with certain respnsibilities and expectatins. And peple with lts f friendsmay nt be able t carry ut thse respnsibilities— especially thse with t many friends.
In ther wrds, “friendship quality” matters as much, if nt mre, than nly the number f friends yu have. Having lts f friends means yur valuable scial resurces becme dilute (稀释的), making yu less able t be a gd friend. And ther peple will cnsider the fact when deciding whether t make friends with yu. They dn’t want t spend their valuable scial resurces n smene wh is unlikely t pay it back.

    B. The ways f winning mre friends.
    C. The advantages f having many friends.
    D. The prblems with having many friends.
    30. What des the authr think f peple with lts f friends?
    A. They dn’t knw abut reciprcity.
    B. They may fail t perfrm their duties.
    C. They are mre likely t be gd friends.
    D. They have mre valuable scial resurces.
    31. What wuld be the best title fr the text?
    A. Hw D Peple Chse Their Friends?
    B. Mre Friends Are Nt Necessarily Better
    C. Why D Peple Like Having Mre Friends?
    D. Peple With Mre Friends Are Mre Ppular
    D
Fr sme peple, nthing beats a lng walk n a sandy beach. But there’s n denying that it’s nt as easy r as fast t get arund n the beach as it is n a rad r a sidewalk. But why is it s hard t walk n sand?
The prblem with sand is that it’s sft; yu “sink in” at each step. This frces yu t use 2.1 t 2.7 times mre energy with every step yu take. Anther idea is that peple walk mre difficultly n sft than they d n hard surfaces, a study fund. The researchers cmpared hw peple walked n fam(泡沫) and hard surfaces by cunting the frces under their feet and hw much O2 each persn needed. They fund that walking n sftsurfaces, such assand, mud and snw caused peple t take lnger steps — actins that use mre energy than walking n a hard surface.
But as experienced beach walkers knw, there’s a way t make it easier t walk n sand: Just add water. When sand is wet, it becmes mre cmpact (紧密), and walking n it is mre similar t walking n hard surface. In ther wrds, it’s much easier t crss a beach by walking alng the shreline, where the waves rll in and ut. This is a balance thugh; t much water culd make the sand sft nce again. If water isn’t an ptin, there is anther way t make walking n sand easier — increasing yur surface area. This culd be achieved by wearing shes.
Althugh it’s mre difficult, there are sme gd reasns t exercise n sand. The impact frces are lwer n sand than n hard surface. Research suggests that walking acrss sand is much easier n yur jints (关节) and muscles, especially cmpared with a hard and unfriendly surface such as cncrete. That’s why sand is a better surface fr helping athletes recver mre quickly frm exercise.
    32. Why is the questin raised in the first paragraph?

    B. T call up readers’ memries.
    C. T invite readers t answer it.

    C. By walking in the water.
    D. By using special breath methds.
    34. The passage is prbably taken frm_________.

    B. A guide bk.
    C. A jurnal entry.
