In 1885, American farmer Wilsn Bentley attached a camera t his micrscpe and tk what is believed t be the very first pht f a snwflake.

In 1880, Bentley's experiments began with a micrscpe that his mther bught fr his 15th birthday. Grwing up in freezing Vermnt, Bentley wuld identify snwflakes that he liked, befre brushing the thers away with a turkey feather. He wuld then mve the snwflake nt a micrscpe slide, hlding his breath t prevent his sample frm melting in the warmth.
Eventually, Bentley fund a way t attach his camera t the micrscpe—a basic setup that made his achievements all the mre impressive, accrding t Michael Peres, a prfessr f bimedical phtgraphy at the Rchester Institute f Technlgy.
“Snwflake phtgraphy is a challenging task f islating, preserving, fcusing and lighting a minute crystalline (结晶的) structure，” Peres said in a phne interview. “Bentley wrked with primitive (原始的) materials, which made his wrk even mre appreciated. Early phtgraphic materials were t simple.”
