In the fall f 2012, Ken Liu received an ffer frm a Chinese cmpany, which was seeking an English translatr fr a sci-fi nvel titled The Three-Bdy Prblem. Ken was a natural chice: familiar with bth the Chinese and English sci-fi wrding and culture. But The Three-Bdy Prblem was unlike anything Ken had ever read. A mind-bending stry was full f heady technical passages abut physics thery, mixed with prfund mral questins and humanity’s place in the universe. S capturing the nvel in all its cmplexity seemed discuraging.
When the English translatin f The Three-Bdy Prblem was published, it was described as a grundbreaking wrk f speculative fictin（推理小说）. Liu Cixin, the authr f the riginal wrk said, “Usually when Chinese literature gets translated int a freign language, it tends t lse smething. But I dn’t think that happened t The Three-Bdy Prblem. I think it gained smething.”
