While watching videos on Douyin one day, I came across a very unique profile: an 8-year-old farmer livestreaming trendy products in a rural setting. I clicked his page and saw that he was livestreaming because he needed to cover his wife’s medical expenses. Curious, I decided to contact him and learn more about his story.

Now a retired farmer, Wu relies on government subsidies (补贴). One rainy day, he returned to his one-floor cottage in the suburb of Henan province and found his wife lying on the ground in great pain. She had broken her leg and lost the ability to walk.

A great burden befell this already poverty-stricken family. The medical expenses for Wu’s wife are about 800 yuan per month. Her daughter, a mother of three and a housewife, has no means of supporting Wu financially. As a heavy user on Douyin, Wu’s daughter thought that perhaps they too could try livestreaming as a way to help their family. With a 9.9 yuan phone holder, they began livestreaming on Douyin, and Wu became one of the oldest livestreamers on the platform.

Every day, Wu livestreams for a total of six hours, separated into morning and afternoon sessions. With a broad smile and soothing (宽慰的) voice. he explains the products on his table, which range from water bottles, makeup removers and vegetables to traditional Chinese clothing that Wu wears himself in front of the camera. Thousands of viewers are drawn in by his moving story and amiable personality. They refer to him dearly as “my uncle Wu” or “Laoxiang”.

During my interview with him, Wu would laugh warmly. His strong Henan dialect was sometimes hard to understand, but his tone was full of comfort and optimism. “I enjoy livestreaming. One day, one of the viewers came to visit me. I was so happy. “Wu spoke about the friendships he made after becoming a livestreamer, and his voice was so contagious that it put a smile on my face.

He also does not avoid showing affection for his wife: “I will buy her good food when I have the money.” I am moved by his ability to see the optimistic side of life despite being struck by hardships and his resilience sailing through the low tides of life.

    24. Why did Wu start livestreaming?

     A. To pay his wife’s medical bills.  B. To promote trendy products.

     C. To share his story with viewers.  D. To support his daughter.

    25. What happened to Wu’s family?

     A. They lost the chance to get subsidies.  B. Wu was forced to retire from his job.

     C. Wu’s wife had her leg injured.  D. Wu suffered from a severe disease.

    26. What attracted viewers to Wu’?

     A. His products of high quality.  B. His good nature and touching experience.

     C. His rich experience in front of the camera.  D. His detailed explanation of products.

    27. Which of the following best describes Wu?

     A. Helpful and sociable.   B. Confident and modest

     C. Open-minded and responsible,  D. Cheerful and humorous.

Famous agricultural expert Yuan Longping, known as the “father of hybrid rice”, died in May at the age of 91, But his legacy lives on, most recently with the successful trial planting of his giant rice variety in Chongqing’s Dazu district.

One hectare of the 2-meter-tall giant rice plants was hailed (称颂) as a success in August in Dazu district. The new rice variety seems to thrive despite high temperatures. Twice as tall as standard varieties, the giant rice plants will be harvested at the end of September. Most excitingly, they have an estimated yield of 12 metric tons per hectare a significant increase over the 9 metric tons per hectare typically expected 2021 with rice.

The new variety is not only resistant to heat, disease and flooding, but also provides an ideal habitat for aquatic (水生的) creatures and mammals, whose excrement (粪便) adds nutrients to the plants. A project to plant 1,333 hectares of giant rice variety and introduce aquatic animals is planned in Dazu district, Luo said. “Normal rice can yield a profit of $ 930 (about 6, 000 yuan) to $1, 155 (about 7, 454 yuan) per hectare, but planting giant rice and raising aquatic animals together may help farmers increase profits by a factor of five or six, Luo said.

Yuan Longping began researching hybrid rice in 1964 and succeeded in cultivating the world’s first high-yield strain in 1973. Yuan once said he had two dreams: to “enjoy the cool shade beneath rice plants taller than men and to see hybrid rice grown all over the world to help solve the global food shortage. “The giant rice “represents the realization of Yuan’s dream”, said Chen Yangpu, deputy director of the Chongqing branch of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center.

    28. According to the text, which can serve as evidence that “his legacy lives on” in Paragraph 1?

     A. It can grow well despite low temperatures.  B. It has a yield of 9metric tons per hectare.

     C. It will be harvested in October.  D. It is twice the height of the standard variety.

    30. How does the new variety benefit farmers?

     A. It is easier to grow and harvest.  B. It can bring farmers extra sources of income.

     C. Its nutrients profit farmers.  D. Its long stalks can be used to feed animals.

    31. Which of the following was one of Yuan Longping’s dreams according to the text?

     A. Solving the problem of global starvation.  B. Improving the giant rice variety.

     C. Leading the international research on rice.  D. Promoting rice as the main food overseas.

Humans are not the only ones adapting to the effects of global climate change. Animals are also adapting to the environmental changes --as some warm-blooded animals are beginning to “shapeshift” their bodies in response to shifts in climate, according to a recent study in Trends in Ecology & Evolution led by Sara Ryding, a researcher at Deakin University in Australia.

In the study, researchers identified new evidence that supports the theory that some warm-blooded animals are experiencing changes to their bodies due to the rising temperatures, resulting in larger legs, ears and beaks in some cases. The researchers noted that according to a principle known as “Allen’s Rule,” warm-blooded animals living in colder climates tend to have smaller appendages (like beaks or legs) than animals of the same species living in warmer climates.

Some of the most convincing evidence of shapeshifting was found in birds in Australia and North America, according to researchers. Certain species of Australian parrots have demonstrated about 4%-10% increase in the size of their beaks since 1871, which researchers attribute to rising temperatures. In North America, the dark-eyed junco also has seen an increase in bill size. Larger beaks help birds dissipate additional body heat more effectively, the study said, which is a useful trait as global temperatures rise.

“A lot of the time when climate change is discussed in mainstream media, people are asking ‘can humans overcome this?’ or ‘what technology can solve this?’,” Ryding said in a news release from Cell Press. She said that just like humans, animals also had to adapt to climate changes. Ryding added, “The climate change that we have created is putting a whole lot of pressure on them, and while some species will adapt, others will not.” “Shapeshifting does not mean that animals are coping with climate change and that all is ‘fine,’” Ryding said, “It just means they are evolving to survive it.”

    32. What do we know from the recent study led by Sara Ryding?

     A. The junco has seen an increase in beak size in Australia.

     B. Animals are dealing with climate change well.

     C. Animals living in warmer climates tend to have smaller beaks.

     D. All species will not adapt to climate change.

    33. What does the underlined word “dissipate” in paragraph3probably mean?

     A. Take in.  B. Turn off.  C. Build up.  D. Get rid of.

    34. Which of the following best describe Sara Ryding’s feeling about the animal’s shape-shift?

     A. Concerned.  B. Confused.  C. Indifferent.  D. Amazed.

    35. What can be the best title of this passage?

     A. Humans Are To Blame For Animals Shapeshift

     B. Rising Temperatures Are Threatening Animals

     C. Climate Change Is Making Some Species Shapeshift

     D. Animals Are Coping with Climate Change

Developing and maintaining healthy friendships involves giving and taking.     39     other times you’re on the receiving end. Letting friends know you care about them and appreciate them can help strengthen your bond. It’s as important for you to be a good friend as it is to surround yourself with good friends.

I thought of what my grandmother used to say: “When someone has taken something from you, give it to them, and then you can never be robbed.”

Faced with a significant challenge, the College Entrance Examination, I will devote myself to my study and have no time to surf the Internet. I promise I'll spare no effort to help with your Chinese learning after the exam.

I would be grateful if you could understand and forgive me. Look forward to studying with you online

    soon.

    Yours sincerely

    Li Hua第二节(满分25分)

Are you kidding?he replied. That's not a small amount of money,Ben said with a concerned look. I gave him a comforting pat and shared my grandmother's old saying with him. When someone has taken something from yougive it to themand then you can never be robbed. "Hearing thisBen lowered his head. It was a few minutes before he nodded,“You're right. Christmas is coming. Maybe I have been chosen to be the secret Santa for the woman and her kids."

Two days before Christmaswhile Ben was delivering milk merrily to my doorstepa woman ran toward uswaving money. Astonishedhe gave her a hug. This is the lady I told you about." Ben introduced her to me. Then he turned to the lady"I didn't expect you to come back again. Is your family doing wellThe woman explained with tears welling up,“We are doing great. We were in such a hurry when moving. I have always appreciated your kindness'" Anxiously putting the money in Ben's handshe added,“I have come back to give you the money." Ben put the money back into the woman's hands and said,“The milk was my Christmas present for you and your kids. Keep the money and pass on the kindness. Wish you a Merry Christmas." Ben's face brightenedand he appeared sunnier than ever before.
