Instead f fcusing n reaching a financial milestne r perfect grades, aim t prgram yur brain with thughts and behavirs that make yu feel better, Sants recmmends. Regularly cnnecting with friends, taking care f yur health and learning hw t accept negative emtins all cntribute mre significantly t yur well-being than having the right jb, car r relatinships, she adds in a curse lecture.
The timing f the teen-specific curse, which already has at least 17, 000 members, is gd. Mre than a third f teens self-reprt experiencing pr mental health, and nearly half feel cnstant sadness r hpelessness during the pandemic, accrding t a Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin survey that surveyed participants thrugh mid-2021. Even befre the COVID-19 pandemic hit, thse numbers had already increased by 40% frm 2009 t 2019, the CDC nted. The agency’s survey als fund that 20% f teens had seriusly cnsidered and 9% had attempted suicide.
Sants says she wants t help change thse numbers by making the science f happiness accessible. “Happiness isn’t just abut enjying ur day-t-day lives,” she adds. “It helps yu land jbs and live lnger, cntributing t yur success when yu’re nt really chasing it.”

Mangrves(红树林) grw n the bundary between land and sea. Rted in the sil expsed t sea water, they supprt a rich bidiversity and prvide a valuable nursery fr sme sea animals like fish, supprting the fd security f castal cmmunities. Mre imprtantly, they can resist natural disasters, thus keeping cmmunities and structures safe and sund.
Over time, these exceptinal trees have adapted t withstanding r recvering frm the impact f natural disasters such as strms and tsunamis(海啸). When waves pass thrugh mangrve frests, the abve-grund rts and branches f the trees reduce wave height and energy. This decreases the waves’ ability t cnsume the sil and damage castal buildings, while reducing the risk f flding fr lw-lying areas behind the mangrve frests. Over a distance f 100m, wave heights can decrease between 13% and 66%. Over a distance f 500m, mangrves can reduce the height f waves by 50% t 99%.
Dense (茂密的) mangrve frests als reduce wind speeds lcally, which has the added advantage f preventing waves in and immediately behind the mangrves. This can ptentially reduce its hazard t nearby facilities.
There is grwing evidence that mangrves can reduce the impact f tsunamis by lwering the destructive energy f water flwing inland. This was the case ntably during the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. Mangrve belts, which are several meters wide, have been shwn t decrease tsunami wave height by between 5% and 30%. Wide and dense mangrve frests can als limit the area flded by tsunamis. Hwever, tsunamis ver 4 meters deep may be taller than the mangrves and able t damage r even destry these trees. Therefre, engineered structures are rarely built t the height f mangrves.
Sme mangrve trees can grw up t 60m in height, depending n the species, climatic cnditins and available nutrients. Sme mangrves als exist as shrt plants. They are fund in the castal areas f the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. It is estimated that mre than three-quarters f the wrld’s mangrves are nw threatened by castal develpment, verexplitatin, waste dispsal and ther pressures.
32. What enables mangrves t reduce wave height and energy accrding t paragraph 2?
A. The surrunding sil.B. Their rich bidiversity.
C. The high-lying areas ahead.D. Their natural structure.
33. What des the underlined wrd “hazard” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Respnse.B. Cntributin.C. Attachment.D. Threat.
34. Why des the authr mentin the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004?
A. T prve mangrves can fight against tsunamis.
B. T say engineered structures are easily destryed.
C. T shw the harmful results brught by tsunamis.
D. T explain the gradual frmatin f castal disasters.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Mangrves: the Mirrrs f Natural Disasters
B. Mangrves: the Heres f Castal Prtectin
C. Mangrves: Seriusly Threatened Plant Species
D. Mangrves: Shelters fr Endangered Sea Animals
