    Emperr penguins rely n stable (稳定的) sea ice thrughut their breeding seasn. When an egg hatches (孵化), the newbrn chick must fledge (羽化), lsing its sft feathers t gain its waterprf cat. But in 2022, sea ice brke up befre sme grups were finished fledging. Withut waterprf feathers, fledging birds were unable t survive, Fretwell says.
